 Knitted Flower Tutorial

This is a quick and simple knitted flower which can be used to accesorise hats, sweaters, coats,
dresses, blankets, purses, scarves, mittens..... the possibilities are endless! Alternatively it can be
made into a brooch by adding a pin to the back

Suggested yarns:
Any double knit (DK) yarn that knits to the required tension will be suitable. If you wish to make
a smaller flower, use sport or 4 ply yarn and a correspondingly smaller needle. Worsted ot aran
weight yarn will create a bigger flower.

Materials needed
Approx 3 grams / 9 metres / 10 yards main colour DK yarn for the petals
Approx 1 metre / 1 yard of contrast DK yarn for the flower centre
4mm (US size 6) straight knitting needles
Tapestry needle

Abbreviations
garter stitch = every row knit
K = knit
kfb =knit into the front and back of the stitch to make an extra stitch (the same as increase)
K2tog = knit two stitches together
st(s) = stitch(es)
stocking st (stockinette) = 1 row knit, 1 row purl
[ ] = work the instructions in the brackets by the number of times indicated

Size:
Knit in DK yarn the flower will be approx 6 cms (2.5”) in diameter.

Gauge/Tension
Tension is not important for this pattern, but if you would like to know, it should be about 22sts and
30 rows to 10cm (4”) square over stocking stitch using 4mm (US Size 6) needles.

Petals
Using 4mm (US size 6) needles and petal
colour yarn, cast on 51sts.
Rows 1 - 4: Stocking st
Row 5: K1 [Cast off 9 sts] 5 times 6sts
Break off yarn leaving a good length, thread
through remaining stitches, draw up and fasten
off.

Flower Centre
Using 4mm (US size 6) needles and contrast
yarn, cast on 2sts.
Row 1: kfb in each stitch 4sts
Rows 2 - 4: Knit 3 rows garter stitch
Row 5: [K2tog] twice 2sts
Row 6: K2tog and fasten off
To Make Up
Sew up the little seam on the flower so that it is
circular.
