When I entered the Google Meet event for today's lecture on prison management, I was

excited. In spite of the virtual environment, I was looking forward to learning about
penology, punishment, rehabilitation and crisis management in prison.

Our instructor, who is proficient in online tools, started the lecture right away. Using
slides and detailed explanations, she explained the fundamental principles of prison
management. In order to make it easy for them to understand, she has shown concepts
such as penology, punishment and rehabilitation in a simple manner.

As we move towards penalties and sanctions, we've been looking at past contexts and
ethical considerations. Through the lecturer's engaging delivery, we listened attentively
and absorbed the information, occasionally pausing to answer questions posed by the
lecturer. We've been active in the discussion, listening attentively and offering insight or
giving our opinions where we were asked.

First, explored penology, which is the study of the punishment of crime. Understanding
the different forms of punishment and how they are applied within the criminal justice
system was a part of this process.

In the context of criminal justice, we have explored the concepts of punishment and
penalty with a view to discussing their purposes and consequences. It also covered the
analysis of various penalties, e.g. fines, prison sentences and community service.

The issue of sentence, which involves determining the appropriate punishment for a
criminal offenses, has also been addressed in our discussions. We've learned about the
factors taken into account in sentencing decisions and the principles which guide judges
to arrive at their conclusions.

Rehabilitation, which aims to help offenders reintegrate into society and lead a lawful
life, was another important aspect we covered. In order to address the underlying
causes of criminal behavior, we have explored different rehabilitation programmes and
strategies.

Our lecturer also discussed the rights of individuals within the criminal justice system,
including their constitutional rights, legal limitations and conditions of detention. This
included examining the legal frameworks such as the Constitution, legislation and
human rights declarations like those of the UN.

We've learned about the role and functions of the BJMP in running municipal or county
prisons. Understanding its mandate, organizational structure and responsibilities to
provide for the safety and humane treatment of prisoners was part of this process.

In addition, we have examined BUCOR's role in the management of National


Penitentiaries and other prison authorities. Understanding its role in prison,
rehabilitation and reformation of offenders involved. The lecturer also discussed the
procedures for admitting individuals to prisons, including documentation, evaluation and
classification.

To ensure the safety of both prisoners and staff, our discussions focused on security
measures and protocols that have been put in place at correctional facilities. We've
examined the requirements people have to meet in order to be admitted into
correctional facilities, including examinations, background checks and security
clearances. In addition, we have learned about the visitor policy and procedures at
correctional facilities in relation to scheduling visits, registration or security
arrangements for visitors.

Protocols governing the movement of prisoners in detention facilities, such as transport


between those facilities and movements inside them, have also been discussed during
our discussions.

For various purposes, such as court appearances or medical appointments, we have


learned about the procedures and protocols for escorting inmates to and from prisons.

Finally, we discussed the mechanisms for maintaining custody and control within
correctional facilities as well as disciplinary procedures to deal with inmate rule
infringements.

When I left the virtual session, my experience of active participation in correctional


administration studies made me feel even more inspired. There was a palpable sense of
comradeship and mutual learning, in spite of the technological medium. As I logged off,
I reflected on the power of online learning to foster engagement and collaboration, even
in the most difficult of subjects.
