Validate Vehicle Specification

Learning Outcomes
• LO2. Check vehicle engine type.
Vehicle Engine Type – the engines are two types, and
these are external and internal combustion engine.
• An internal combustions engine – is a heat engine in which the
combustion of a fuel occurs with an oxidizer in a combustion chamber
that is an integral part of the working fluid flow circuit.
Ex. Gasoline engines, diesel engines, gas-turbine, and rocket propulsion
systems.

• An external combustion engine - is a heat engine where a working

fluid, contained internally, is heated by combustion in an external
source, through the engine wall or a heat exchanger. The fluid then,
by expanding and acting on the mechanism of the engine, produces
motion and usable work.
Ex. Train and power plants.
(A natural gas power plant boils water into steam to turn a turbine, creating
electricity.)
Gasoline engine vehicle – this type of vehicle runs on an engine that uses gasoline
fuel. Because gasoline engine produce high power yet to come in a compact package,
they are widely used in passenger vehicles.
1. Engine
2. Fuel tank (gasoline)

Diesel engine vehicle – this type of vehicle runs on an engine that uses diesel fuel.
Because diesel engines produce large torque and offer good fuel economy, they are
widely used trucks and SUVs.
3. Engine
4. Fuel tank (diesel fuel)
Hybrid vehicle – this type of vehicle is equipped with different types of motive power,
such as gasoline engine and electric motor. Because the gasoline engine generates
electricity, this type of vehicle thus not require an external source for recharging the
battery. System of wheel driver uses 270 v, on the other hand, other electric 12v.
Ex: during start-off, it uses an electric motor that produces high power
despite a low speed. When the vehicle picks up speed, it operates the
gasoline engine that is more efficient at higher speeds. By making the
best use of both types of motive force in this manner, it is effective in
reducing exhaust emission and improving fuel economy.
1. Engine
2. Inverter
3. Transaxle
4. Converter
5. battery
• Electric vehicle (EV) – this vehicle uses the power of the batteries to
operate the electric motor. Instead of using fuel, the batteries require
recharging. It including zero emission and low noise during operation.
System of wheel drive uses 290V.
1. Power control unit
2. Electric motor
3. battery
• Fuel cell hybrid vehicle (FCHV) – this electric vehicle uses the electric
energy that is created when the hydrogen fuel reacts with the oxygen
in the air to form water. Because it emits only water. This considered
to be the ultimate form of low-pollution vehicle. And is anticipated to
become the motive power for the next generation.
1. Power control unit 4. hydrogen storage system
2. Electric motor 5. Secondary battery
3. Fuel cell stack
Engine are classified according to:
1. Fuel used
2. Method of ignition
3. Method of cooling
4. Cylinder arrangement
5. Number of cylinder
6. Valve arrangement
7. Valve drive method
8. Valve train arrangement
9. Method of fuel induction system
10. Firing order
