 What I Need to Know
This module was made to provide knowledge and skills on finding locations in
different places on Earth. This will guide you on how to use the imaginary lines that
make up the coordinate system of the Earth. You will also gain information about the
location of the Philippines in relation with our neighbouring countries and bodies of
water that surround the country.

After going through this module, you are expected to demonstrate how places
on Earth may be located using a coordinate system. S7ES-IVa-1

Specifically, you are expected to:

 identify some imaginary lines used in locating places on Earth;
 differentiate latitude from longitude when locating places;
 find some places on a map using the coordinate system; and
 describe the location of the Philippines with respect to the countries and
bodies of water surrounding it.

Lesson Locating Places on Earth

The lines that run vertically and horizontally on maps and globes are used as
references when locating places on Earth. These are imaginary lines that guide us find
the location of places on Earth. Latitude shows the measurement of location North or
South of the beginning point- equator. Longitude is the measurement of location East
or West of the Prime Meridian. Latitude and longitude are two different distances that
when put together formed coordinates on Earth.

What Is It
A coordinate system is a grid that is used to identify locations on a page or
screen that is equivalent to grid locations on the globe.
The lines that run vertically and horizontally on maps and globes are used as
references when locating places on Earth. The imaginary lines represent the parallels of

latitude, meridians of longitude, equator, and the Prime Meridian.The most commonly
used are latitude and longitude.

Latitude shows the measurement of location North or South of the beginning point-
equator. Longitude is the measurement of location East or West of the Prime Meridian.
Latitude and longitude are two different distances that when put together formed
coordinates on Earth.

Latitude lines North of the Equator are referred to as North latitude; latitude lines
South of the Equator are referred to as South latitude.
Longitude lines East of the Prime Meridian are referred to as East longitude; longitude
lines West of the Prime Meridian are referred to as West longitude.

Philippines is at 13°N 122°E. Marikina City is located at 15°N 121°E

The Philippines is situated on the South Asian part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. It is
surrounded by countries such as Taiwan, Japan, Guam, Malaysia, Singapore,
Thailand, and others. To the North is the Asian continent, to the East are the
Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean and to the West are the South China Sea or the
West Philippine Sea and the Indian Ocean.

The world has 7 continents. These are the large masses of land on the Earth’s surface.
The continents are positioned in different latitude and longitude on the surface of the
Earth. Latitude shows the measurement of location North or South of the beginning
point- equator. Longitude is the measurement of location East or West of the Prime
Meridian.

2. Find the equator at 0 degree and use it as starting point when locating places in the
North and South direction.
