What I Need to Know

This module will discuss the great mass of air that envelops Earth’s surface
and is held in place by the planet’s gravitational force called atmosphere. It is an
envelope of air that surrounds the Earth where all weather events happen. It is the
protective blanket in which we live.

After going through this module, you are expected to discuss how energy
from the Sun interacts with the layers of the atmosphere.S7ES-IVd-5

Specifically, you are expected to:

 describe the different layers of Earth’s atmosphere;
 relate temperature and altitude in each layer of the atmosphere;
 explain what happens to the air in the surroundings as warm air
rises; and
 discuss how energy from the Sun enters the atmosphere.

What is Greenhouse Effect?

Study the diagram.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Earth%27s_greenhouse_effect_(US_EPA,_2012).png

Energy from the sun reaches the Earth as solar radiation and some energy is
reflected by the Earth and the atmosphere. Most of the radiation is absorbed by the
Earth's surface and warms it while Infrared (heat) radiation is emitted by the
Earth's surface and some passes through the atmosphere. Greenhouse gas
molecules absorbed and re-emitted some of it in all directions. Until it warms the
Earth's surface and the lower atmosphere.

The trapped heat makes the Greenhouse gases warms the atmosphere though
some of the heat radiation out from the ground is trapped by greenhouse gases in
the troposphere. Greenhouse gases serve as insulation for the planet. The warming
of the atmosphere due to insulation by greenhouse gases is called the greenhouse
effect. Then the Greenhouse gases are the component parts of the atmosphere
that moderate Earth’s temperatures. More greenhouse gases trap more heat
warming the atmosphere. Then, the increase or decrease of greenhouse gases in
the atmosphere affects climate and weather in the whole world.

Answer the following guide questions:

1. Explain how does the light from the Sun reaches and enters the Earth’s surface?
_________________________________________________________________________

2. List down some of the consequences people will experience if the amount of
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere continues to increase.

What’s More
When getting nearer the Earth’s surface, the air gets cpp;er the higher you climb.

In climbing the
mountain, expect the
air temperature to
decrease by 6.5
degrees Celsius for
every 1000 meters
you gain. This is
called the standard
(average) lapse rate.

.
When the air temperature is 30 0C at sea level, as shown in the figure above,
expect it to be around 10.5 0C at air altitude of 3000 meters due to the lapse rate.

Guide questions:
Let say you are going to climb a Mountain today!
1. As you leave the house at 2000 meters, the air temperature is 15° C. What will
be the temperature at the 4000-meter summit?
________________________________________
2. What happens to the surrounding air as warm air rises?
________________________________________

When the warm air rises, the air becomes cooler. Then the warmth of the air
expands the air. When there is more air that expands due to low air pressure, the
colder it gets. So, as the air rises,it becomes colder.
