INTRODUCTION TO DC-DC CONVERTER
A DC-DC converter is an electrical device which converts direct current (DC) sources as input voltage and
gives output a different DC voltage. The output DC voltage can be higher or lower than the DC input
voltage, there are several types of DC-DC converters. The most common classification is from the ratio
between the input and output voltage point of view.
A more efficient type of DC-DC converters is the switching DC-DC converter. In switching DC-DC
converters, transistors are operated as switches, which means that they dissipate less power. The voltage drop
across the transistors is very low when they conduct high current and the transistors conduct a nearly zero
current when the voltage drop across them is high. Therefore, the conduction losses are low and the
efficiency of switching-mode converters is high, usually above 80% or 90%. However, switching losses
reduce the efficiency at high frequencies, the higher the switching frequency, the higher the power losses.
In Buck DC-DC converters the output voltage is always less than the input voltage. On the other hand, in
DC-DC Boost converters, the output voltage is always greater than the input voltage. A Buck-Boost DC-DC
converter combines the two and can have its output voltage both higher and lower compared to the input
voltage, depending on the duty ratio applied to the switch.

BUCK-BOOST CONVERTER
Buck Boost converter can operate as a DC-DC Step-Down converter or a DC-DC Step-Up converter
depending upon the duty cycle, D. The input voltage source is connected to a MOSFET/IGBT. The second
switch used is a diode. The diode is connected, in reverse to the direction of power flow from source, to a
capacitor and the load and the two are connected in parallel. The controlled switch is turned on and off by
using Pulse Width Modulation. D varies between 0 and 1. If D > 0.5, the output voltage is larger than the
input; and if D < 0.5, the output is smaller than the input. But if D = 0.5 the output voltage is equal to the
input voltage.
