Plan of Investigation
My group is focusing on ‘Diseases’ and I will be researching “The correlation between vaccines
and long life.

The reason I am interested in this topic is because, considering all the diseases around us I want
to help lengthen the lives of people around me.

I will benefit from my topic by gaining more insight on vaccines and long life and understand it
more in depth. My reading skills will improve by a substantial amount through my research.

It is my intent to use an articles biography and newspapers.

I will be using my English skill reading to present my oral presentation in the form of speech.

Objective:

The aim of this study was to compare the health of vaccinated versus unvaccinated pediatric
populations.

Method:

Using data from three medical practices in the United States with children born between
November 2005 and June 2015, vaccinated children were compared to unvaccinated children
during the first year of life for later incidence of developmental delays, asthma, ear infections
and gastrointestinal disorders.

Vaccination before 1 year of age was associated with increased odds of developmental delays
(OR = 2.18, 95% CI 1.47–3.24), asthma (OR = 4.49, 95% CI 2.04–9.88) and ear infections (OR
= 2.13, 95% CI 1.63–2.78). In a quartile analysis, subjects were grouped by number of vaccine
doses received in the first year of life. Higher odds ratios were observed in Quartiles 3 and 4
(where more vaccine doses were received) for all four health conditions considered, as compared
to Quartile 1. In a temporal analysis, developmental delays showed a linear increase as the age
cut-offs increased from 6 to 12 to 18 to 24 months of age (ORs = 1.95, 2.18, 2.92 and 3.51,
respectively). Slightly higher ORs were also observed for all four health conditions when time
permitted for a diagnosis was extended from ⩾ 3 years of age to ⩾ 5 years of age.

Conclusion:

In this study, which only allowed for the calculation of unadjusted observational associations,
higher ORs were observed within the vaccinated versus unvaccinated group for developmental
delays, asthma and ear infections.

Getting Vaccinated Is Safer Than Getting Sick

Vaccines help the body learn how to defend itself from disease without the dangers of a full-
blown infection. The immune response to a vaccine might cause tiredness and discomfort for a
day or two, but the resulting protection can last a lifetime.

Vaccines work by imitating an infection—the presence of a disease-causing organism in the


body—to engage the body’s natural defenses. The active ingredient in all vaccines is an antigen,
the name for any substance that causes the immune system to begin producing antibodies. In a
vaccine, the antigen could be either.

 Weakened or killed bacteria or viruses.


 Bits of their exterior surface or genetic material, or

 Bacterial toxin treated to make it non-toxic.

Vaccines Strengthen the Body’s Natural Defenses

To be immune is to be partially or fully resistant to a specific infectious disease or disease-


causing organism. A person who is immune can resist the bacteria or viruses that cause a disease,
but the protection is never perfect.

Immunization is the process of being made resistant to an infectious disease, usually by means
of a vaccine.

Immunity is protection against a disease, and it can be passive or active, natural or vaccine
induced.

Active immunity comes from being exposed to a disease-causing organism.

 Natural immunity results from being infected by a disease-causing organism, whether


the infection is symptomatic or not.
 Vaccine-induced immunity results from being exposed to killed or weakened bacteria or
viruses—or even just important pieces of them—through vaccination.

Either way, active immunity takes longer to develop but lasts longer than passive immunity.

Passive immunity is provided by antibodies produced by another human being or animal.

 Full-term babies acquire passive immunity from their mother’s antibodies during the final
months of pregnancy.
 Patients can acquire passive immunity through antibody-containing blood products
derived from human or animal sources.

Passive immunity provides protection that is immediate but fades within weeks or months.

Vaccines Protect You
What is your immune system?

The immune system is a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to defend the
body from harmful germs. When bacteria, viruses, and other germs invade your body, they
multiply and attack. This invasion is called an infection. Infections cause diseases that make you
sick.

Your immune system protects you from disease by fighting off the invading germs.

How does the immune system work?

Your immune system is always on patrol in your body. When it comes across an invading germ,
it attacks that germ. This is called an immune response.

Here’s how an immune response works:

 Your immune system sounds the alarm, so your body knows there’s an infection.

 It begins releasing antibodies to fight the germ — think of antibodies as soldiers designed
to fight off the specific germ you have. This process can take a few days.
 The antibodies work to attack, weaken, and destroy the germ.
 Afterwards, your immune system remembers the germ. If the germ invades again, your
body can recognize it and quickly send out the right antibodies, so you don’t get sick!
 This protection against a certain disease is called immunity. In many cases, immunity
lasts your whole life.

How do vaccines work?

Vaccines help your immune system fight infections faster and more effectively. When you get a
vaccine, it sparks your immune response, helping your body fight off and remember the germ so
it can attack it if the germ ever invades again. And since vaccines are made of very small
amounts of weak or dead germs, they won’t make you sick.

Vaccines often provide long-lasting immunity to serious diseases without the risk of serious
illness.

Which is safer: Natural immunity or immunity after getting a vaccine?

Vaccines are much safer. Natural immunity happens after you get sick with a disease. But
diseases can be serious — and even deadly. A vaccine protects you from a disease before it
makes you sick.

Artifact 1
Before doing this research, I thought unvaccinated children was more likely to contract diseases
compare to vaccinated, upon further research it was proven in that unvaccinated children were
less likely to contract diseases compare to vaccinated children.

Artifact 2
Before doing my research, I thought that putting the disease in your body was a bad idea if
you’re trying not to contract it but i have learnt that vaccines work by imitating viruses and
release a small dose of the germ in the body to help your body know how to fight it off so if you
contract it your body eliminates it immediately.

Artifact 3
During this research I learnt how our immune system works when our body has an infection. I
thought that getting natural immunity was the best way, but my research has shown that in the
case of a deadly disease my body might not be able to figure out how to fight it in time which
can cause serious damages to my body why getting vaccine are necessary.

Reflection Two

My First artifact is an internet article entitled “Analysis of health outcomes in vaccinated and
unvaccinated children.” Which is an expositive piece that uses an informative tone to convey its
message. Examples of this tone are lines like “higher ORs were observed within the vaccinated
versus unvaccinated group” and “Slightly higher ORs were also observed for all four health
conditions when time permitted for a diagnosis was extended”. This tone draws to the readers
attention that statistical facts to the issue.

My second artifact article entitled “getting Vaccinated is safer than getting sick” which is a
expositive piece that uses an informative tone to convey its message. Examples of this tone are
lines like “Vaccines help the body learn how to defend itself from disease without the dangers of
a full-blown infection.” Or active immunity takes longer to develop but lasts longer than passive
immunity. This tone draws the reader’s attention to the value of vaccines.

My third artifact article entitled “Vaccines Protect You.” Which uses a descriptive piece that
uses an informative tone to convey its message. Examples of this tone are lines like “The
immune system is a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to defend the body
from harmful germs.” Or “Your immune system is always on patrol in your body”. This tone was
used to show how the vaccine an immune system works together to fight off diseases.

Reflection 3
How I have grown as a student.

When I started working in my group, I didn’t really liked it but it enable me to start working with others
and build my teamwork abilities. The sub issue, I decided to research on the sub issue ‘the correlation of
vaccines and long life’.

Although I’m a person who don’t like to read it, but I was in a position where I had to, and I enjoyed
analyzing the information and realizing that vaccines play a big role in keeping use healthy.

I was further challenged with deeply analyzing my 3 artifacts, pointing out what tone was in the pieces
and the message the pieces were trying to bring to light.

For my oral presentation I did a rap, it was a newly found hobby I liked, and it was also the first time I
wrote a rap song. Presenting my rap build my confidence and I slowly overcame my stage fright.

Written Report
Our group focus is ‘disease’ which is defined to be an effort of nature to free the system from
conditions that result from the violation of the laws of health. Our group was formed from our
friend group resulting at the start of the summer when we initially started our SBA.

We originally started with 5 members but was shortly decreased by 1, we 4 choose this topic
because we understand that disease will always be around and can be very deadly. Our area of
research was: ‘Correlation of vaccines and long life’, ‘vaccines distribution in school’, ‘Vaccines
passport’ and ‘the social impact of vaccines and its effects on public health’.

We selected this sub issues because we have seen how deadly disease can be, when the covid
pandemic was rampant vaccines stopped the fatality rate by a lot allowing use to have a better
survivability. We intend to bring to the attention of the country the need for vaccines and how we
can improve vaccines to save more lives.

The first artifact is an article “getting vaccinated is better than getting sick” by the U.S.
Department of Health & Human Services it talks about how vaccines work and outlines the
difference between natural and vaccine-induced immunity. Our second topic was “Quality and
assurance of vaccines” these talks about how vaccines is produced, approved and safety. Our
third artifact was ‘The poetry of prevention’ by Gavi staff, the poem speaks about how vaccines
make you healthier which is like having wealth,

The problem we faced was miss communication and it strained us, we overcame our
indifferences and started working together. We choose these artifacts because they are most
relevant to our group topic, we wish for our SBA to reach the whole country to educate them on
the importance of our research so we can further avoid outbreaks of Diseases.
