ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGER, supporting deci-
sion making in a professional contest. ENVIRON-
MENTAL OFFICER, working on policies for su-
stainable development, consulting on environ-
mental management systems, environmental
integration of structural funds. ENVIRONMEN-
TAL RESEARCHER, innovative research works in
different fields, offering the added value of the
interdisciplinary vision acquired during training.
WACOMA graduates may work in international
companies in energy, industrial chemistry, tou-
rism, building, insurance, etc. fields; at Universi-
ties, Research bodies, Prevention, Protection
and Control Agencies, Institutes for Environ-
mental Protection and Research, Industrial Re-
search Centers, Local, National and Regional
Authorities, NGOs, EEA, UNEP. WACOMA gra-
duates may also choose to work for Consulting
companies or as freelance professionals.
WACOMA is an open-access degree with minimum

 WACOMA OUTLINES
The international master degree pro-
gramme in Water and Coastal Manage-
ment (WACOMA) of the University of
Bologna is included in the teaching
offer of the Ravenna Campus, which
has always been specialized in teaching
and research on environmental and
marine science themes.
Interdisciplinary knowledge on the
marine environment and on estuarine,
lagoon and coastal systems offered by
WACOMA are fundamental for the fig-
ure of manager of the coastal marine
environment that is increasingly
sought after worldwide.
WACOMA KEYWORDS AND GOALS
In line with the current and urgent needs in
the field of water and coastal management,
students first acquire a deep understanding
of coastal processes, e.g coastal erosion,
salt intrusion, emerging pollutants, biodiver-
sity loss, marine level rise, etc., climate chal-
lenges, mitigation and adaptation measures,
and build skills in wetlands restoration, that
provide recreational opportunities and drive
coastal economies; protection of the dune
system to avoid saline intrusion; mecha-
nisms for dissipation of the force of the
waves, etc. etc. The use of advanced tech-
nologies (remote sensing, data modeling
and visualization, etc.) is taught during
hands-on laboratory and field workshops.
The teachers involved in the degree course
do research on the topics covered in class,
and offer Theses as part of their research
projects, also in collaboration with external
bodies. Graduates will reach the ability to
develop balancing actions between eco-
nomic growth and ecosystem health, and
risk management associated with natural
and man-induced events, and possess skills
to develop coastal management programs
in order to find the right answers for short-
and long-term goals.
