FLEXIBLE POWER TRANSMISSION

1.) An engine, running at 120 r.p.m., drives a line shaft by means of a belt. The engine pulley is
650 mm diameter and the pulley on the line shaft being 350 mm. A 800 mm diameter pulley
on the line shaft drives a 130 mm diameter pulley keyed to a dynamo shaft. Find the speed of
the dynamo shaft, when 1. There is no slip, and 2. There is a slip of 2% at each drive.

Given: N1 = 120 r.p.m. ; d1 = 650 mm ; d2 = 350 mm ; d3 = 800 mm ; d4 = 130 mm

Let N4 = Speed of the dynamo shaft

1. When there is no slip

𝑁4 𝑑1 𝑥 𝑑3 𝑁4 650 𝑥 800
We know that = 𝑜𝑟 =
𝑁1 𝑑2 𝑥 𝑑4 120 350 𝑥 130

𝑁4 = 1371 𝑟𝑝𝑚

2. When there is a slip of 2% at each drive

𝑁4 𝑑1 𝑥 𝑑3 𝑠1 𝑠2
We know that = (1 − )(1 − )
𝑁1 𝑑2 𝑥 𝑑4 100 100

𝑁4 650 𝑥 800 2 2

120 350 𝑥 130 100 100

𝑁4 = 1317 𝑟𝑝𝑚 𝑨𝒏𝒔.

2.) The power is transmitted from a pulley 2 m diameter running at 150 r.p.m. to a pulley 3.25 m
diameter by means of a belt. Find the speed lost by the driven pulley as a result of creep, if
the stress on the tight and slack side of the belt is 1.2 MPa and 0.4 MPa respectively. The
Young’s modulus for the material of the belt is 90 MPa

Given : d1 = 2 m ; N1 = 150 r.p.m. ; d2 = 2.25 m ; σ1 = 1.2 MPa = 1.4 × 106 N/m2 ; σ2 = 0.4 MPa =
0.4 × 106 N/m2 ; E = 90 MPa = 90 × 106 N/m2

Let N2 = Speed of the driven pulley.

Neglecting creep, we know that

𝑁2 𝑑1 𝑑1 2
= or 𝑁2 = 𝑁1 𝑥 = 150 x = 92.30 𝑟𝑝𝑚
𝑁1 𝑑2 𝑑2 3.25

Considering creep, we know tha

𝑁2 𝑑1 𝐸 + √σ2
= 𝑥
𝑁1 𝑑2 𝐸 + √σ1

Or 𝑁2 = 150 𝑥 𝑥 = 92 𝑟𝑝𝑚
3.25 90 𝑥 106 + √1.2 𝑥 106
∴ Speed lost by driven pulley due to creep

3.) Find the power transmitted by a belt running over a pulley of 500 mm diameter at 150 r.p.m.
The coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.25, angle of lap 160° and
maximum tension in the belt is 2300 N.

to raise the casting.

Given : W = T1 = 7 kN = 7000 N ; d = 400 mm = 0.4 m ; N = 20 r.p.m. ; µ = 0.23

1. Force required by the man

Let T2 = Force required by the man.
Since the rope makes 3.5 turns round the drum, therefore angle of contact,

; the mass of rope 1.9 kg / m and the allowable tension in each rope 2100 N. Find the number
of ropes required.

Given : P = 500 kW ; d = 3 m ; N = 90 r.p.m. ; θ = 150° = 150 × π / 180 = 2.61 rad; 2 β = 45° or

β = 22.5° ; µ = 0.25 ; m = 1.9 kg / m ; T = 2100 N

We know that velocity of the rope,

𝜋𝑑. 𝑁 𝜋 𝑥 3 𝑥 100 m

∴ Centrifugal tension, TC = 𝑚 . 𝑣 2=1.9 (15.70)2 = 468.80 N
and tension in the tight side of the rope,
T1 = T – TC = 2100 – 468.80 = 1631.19 N
Let T2 = Tension in the slack side of the rope.

28.) A 8 m flat belt is to transmit 40 kW to a compressor in a speed of 2500 rpm. Two same pulleys is
used with a distance between shafts of 2.95 m. Find the torsional force of the shaft and the diameter of
the pulley. [Units in lb-in and meters]

Given:
P = 40 kW (1 hp/0.746kW) = 53.62 hp
N = 2500 rpm
C = 2.95 m
L=8m

Required:
T=?
D=?

Solution:
P = TN/63025
53.62 = (T)(2500)/53025
T = 1351.76 lb-in

(𝐷−𝑑)2
𝐿 = 2𝐶 + 1.57(𝐷 + 𝑑) +
4𝐶
𝐿 = 𝜋𝐷 + 2𝐶 → 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝐷 = 𝑑
8 = 𝜋(𝐷) + 2(2.95)
𝑫 = 𝟎. 𝟔𝟔𝟖 𝒎

29.) A 18-tooth motor sprocket, running at 1269 rpm, drives a blower at a speed ratio of 6:1. Compute
the length of chain in meters is required to connect the sprockets by using the largest permissible chain
size with the largest permissible center distance of 2.20 m.

Given:
T1 = 18 tooth
N1 = 1269 rpm
N1/N2 = 6
C = 2.20 m

Required:
L=?

Solution:
N1/N2 = 6
1269/N2 = 6
N2 = 211.5 rpm

T1N 1 = T2N 2
(18)(1269) = (T2)(211.5)
T2 = 108 tooth

𝑇+𝑡 (𝑇−𝑡)2
𝐿= + 2𝐶 +
2 40𝐶
108+18 (108−18)2
𝐿= + 2(2.20) +
2 40(2.20)
𝑳 = 𝟏𝟓𝟗. 𝟒𝟓 𝒎

30.) Two flat belt pulleys having a center to center distance of 140.58 cm have drive diameter of 73.64
cm and 36.82 cm. Determine the angle of contact on the small and big pulley. [Units in rad]

Given:
C = 140.58 cm
D2 = 73.64 cm
D1 = 36.82 cm

Required:
𝜃1 = ?
𝜃2 = ?

Solution:
For the small pulley:
𝐷−𝑑
𝜃 1 = 180 − 2 sin−1 ( )
2𝐶

73.64−36.82
𝜃 1 = 180 − 2 sin−1 ( )
2(140.58)
𝜋 𝑟𝑎𝑑
𝜃 1 = 164.95° ( )
180°
𝜽1 = 2.88 rad

For the big pulley:

𝐷−𝑑
𝜃 2 = 180 + 2 sin−1 ( )
2𝐶
73.64−36.82
𝜃 2 = 180 + 2 sin−1 ( )
2(140.58)
𝜋 𝑟𝑎𝑑
𝜃 2 = 195.05° ( )
180°
𝜽2 = 3.4 rad
