1. A horizontal shaft of 1.5-in in diameter rotates at 650 rpm in sleeve-type

bearing. The coefficient of friction is 0.25. If the reaction between the shaft
and the bearing is 950 lbs, compute the horsepower lost in the bearing

Solution:

F = μN

F = (0. 25) (950) = 237.5 lbs

237.5 𝑙𝑏𝑠(1.5𝑖𝑛)(1𝑓𝑡/12𝑖𝑛)
T = 𝐹(𝑑/2) =( 2
= 14.84375 ft-lb

2π𝑁𝑇 2π(650 𝑟𝑝𝑚)(14.84375 𝑓𝑡−𝑙𝑏)

HPloss = 33,000
= 33,000
= 1.84 Hp

2. A bearing carries a load of 5.550 kN. The shaft diameter is 155 mm, the coefficient of
friction is 0.015, and the shaft speed is 550 rpm. Compute the power lost in the
bearing.

Solution:

F = μW

F = (0. 015) (5, 550𝑁) = 83.25 N

83.25𝑁 (155 𝑚𝑚 )(1𝑚/1000𝑚𝑚)
T = 𝐹(𝑑/2) =( 2
= 6.451875 N-m

Ploss = 2π𝑇𝑁 = 2π(6. 451875 𝑁 − 𝑚)(550 𝑟𝑝𝑚/60) = 371.60 watts

3. A sleeve bearing has an outside diameter of 2.25 in and a length of 3.5 in, the wall
thickness is 0.56 in. The bearing is subjected to a radial load of 775 lb. Find the
bearing pressure.

Solution:

𝐹 775 𝑙𝑏
P = 𝐷𝐿 = (2.25 𝑖𝑛)(3.5 𝑖𝑛)
= 98.41 psi

4. Compute the power lost in the bearing, if a bearing carries a load of 6.5 kN with a shaft
diameter of 250 mm, the coefficient of friction is 0.25, and the shaft speed is 750 rpm.
Solution:

F = μW

F = (0. 25) (6, 500𝑁) = 1625 N

1625𝑁 (250 𝑚𝑚 )(1𝑚/1000𝑚𝑚)
T = 𝐹(𝑑/2) =( 2
= 203.125 N-m

Ploss = 2π𝑇𝑁 = 2π(201. 125 𝑁 − 𝑚)(750 𝑟𝑝𝑚/60) = 15,796.32 watts

5. What is the bearing pressure of a sleeve bearing that has an outside diameter of 3.75 in
and a length of 4.5 in, the wall thickness is 0.6982 in. The bearing is subjected to a
radial load of 690 lb..

Solution:

𝐹 690 𝑙𝑏
P = 𝐷𝐿 = (3.75 𝑖𝑛)(4.5 𝑖𝑛)
= 40.89 psi
6. A 40mm shaft uses sleeve bearing. The total load per bearing is 2500N. An
L/D ratio of 4.5 is desired. What is the bearing pressure?

Solution:

L/D = 4.5

L = 4.5D = 4.5(40mm) = 180mm

2
A = LD = 180(40mm) = 7200𝑚𝑚
2500 𝑁
S = (𝑃/𝐴) =( 2 ) = 0.34722 Mpa
7200𝑚𝑚

7. A 42mm shaft uses sleeve bearing that sustains a load of 4200N. If the
2
allowable bearing pressure is 2. 5𝑀𝑁/𝑚 . Find the length of the bearing.

Solution:

Sb = F/A

2500 Kpa = 4.2KN/A

2
A = 0. 00168𝑚

A = LD

0.00168 = L(0.042) = 0. 4𝑚=400mm

8. A sleeve bearing is to have an L/D ratio of 1.5 and an allowable bearing
2
pressure of 2. 05𝑀𝑁/𝑚 . Find the inside diameter and the length of the
bearing If it is to sustain a load of 2569N.

Solution:

S = (𝐹/𝐴)

0.002569 𝑀𝑁 2
A = (𝐹/𝑆) =( 2 ) = 0. 0012531𝑚
2.05𝑀𝑁/𝑚

L/D = 1.5

L = 1.5D

A = LD

A=1.5D(D)

0.0012531 = 1.5D(D)

D = 0.028903m

L = 1.5D

L = 1.5(0.028903m) = 0.0433545m

9. A sleeve bearing has an outside diameter of 1.55 in and a length of 4 in. The
wall thickness is 2/22 in. The bearing is subjected to a radial load of 650 lb.
Find the bearing pressure.

Solution:

ro = Do/2 = 1.55/2 = 0.775in

ri = ro–t = 0.775-2/22 = 0.68409in

Di = 2ri = 0.68409in(2) = 1.36818in

650𝑙𝑏
P = (𝐹/𝐴) =( 4(1.36818𝑖𝑛) ) = 118.77 psi

S = (𝑃/𝐴) =( 2 ) = 0.4011 Mpa
9200𝑚𝑚
