DESCRIPCIONES:
1. ________________________________________________________________
The Buddhist reform, which so profoundly affected Brahmanism at about the sixth century B.C.,
did not sensibly modify, from the educational point of view, the ideas of the Hindoos. Buddha also
taught that the cause of evil resides in the passions of men, and that in order to attain moral peace,
there is no other means to be employed than that of self-abnegation and of the renouncement of
everything selfish and personal.
2. ________________________________________________________________
Upon that privileged soil of Greece, in that brilliant Athens abounding in artists, poets, historians,
and philosophers, in that rude Sparta celebrated for its discipline and manly virtues, education was
rather the spontaneous fruit of nature, the natural product of diverse manners, characters, and races.
Greece had its pedagogy because it had its legislators and its philosophers, the first directing
education in its practical details, the second making theoretical inquiries into the essential
7
principles underlying the development of the human soul. In respect of education, the higher
spiritual life of modern nations has been developed under the influence of Grecian antiquity.
3. ________________________________________________________________
In Greece, there were two essentially different systems of education in use: at Sparta, a one-sided
education, wholly military, with no regard for intellectual culture; at Athens, a complete education,
which brought into happy harmony the training of the body and the development of the mind.
Rome, in the long course of her history, followed these two systems in succession. Under the
Republic, down to the conquest of Greece, preference was given to education after the Spartan
type; while under the emperors, Athenian education was dominant, with a very marked tendency
to give the first place to an education in literature and oratory.
4. ________________________________________________________________
Save claustral and cathedral schools, the earliest example of our village schools, the sole
educational establishment of the Middle Ages was what is called the University. Towards the
thirteenth and fourteenth century we see multiplying in the great cities of Europe those centres of
study, those collections of students which recall from afar the schools of Plato and Aristotle. Of
such establishments were the university which opened at Paris for the teaching of theology and
philosophy (1200); the universities of Naples (1224), of Prague (1345), of Vienna (1365), of
Heidelberg (1386), etc. These universities were a first expansion of free science. As far back as
the ninth century, the Arabs had given an example to the rest of Europe by founding at Salamanca,
at Cordova, and in other cities of Spain, schools where all the sciences were cultivated.
5. ________________________________________________________________
Modern education begins with the Renaissance. The educational methods that we then begin to
discern will doubtless not be developed and perfected till a later period; the new doctrines will
pass into practice only gradually, and with the general progress of the times. But from the sixteenth
century education is in possession of its essential principles. The education of the Middle Ages,
over-rigid and repressive, which condemned the body to a regime too severe, and the mind to a
discipline too narrow, is to be succeeded, at least in theory, by an education broader and more
liberal; which will give due attention to hygiene and physical exercises.
8
6. ________________________________________________________________
With La Salle and the foundation of the Institute of the Brethren of the Christian Schools, the
historian of education recognizes the Catholic origin of primary instruction; in the decrees and
laws of the French Revolution, but it is to the Protestant Reformers, —to Luther in the sixteenth
century, and to Comenius in the seventeenth—that must be ascribed the honor of having first
organized schools for the people. In its origin, the primary school is the child of Protestantism, and
its cradle was the Reformation
7. ________________________________________________________________
Up to the French Revolution, up to the day when the conception of a public and national education
was embodied in the legislative acts of our assembled rulers, education remained almost
exclusively an affair of the Church. The universities themselves were dependent in part on
religious authority. But especially the great congregations assumed a monopoly of the work of
teaching, the direction and control of which the State had not yet claimed for her right.
8. ________________________________________________________________
The rod is an element of the ancient pedagogical regime. It holds a privileged place both in the
colleges and in private education. Louis XIV officially transmits to the Duke of Montausier the
right to correct his son. Henry IV wrote to the governor of Louis XIII: “I complain because you
did not inform me that you had whipped my son; for I desire and order you to whip him every time
that he shall be guilty of obstinacy or of anything else that is bad”. The Jesuits were careful not to
renounce a punishment that was in use even at court. They reserved to a laic the duty of handling
the rods. An official disciplinarian, a domestic, a porter, was charged in all the colleges with the
functions of chief executioner.
9. ________________________________________________________________
The father of modern philosophy does not generally figure in the lists drawn up by the historians
of education; and yet there is no thinker who has exercised a more decisive influence on the
destinies of education. The author of the Discourse of Method has no system of pedagogy, having
never directly treated of educational affairs; but through his philosophical principles he has
9
changed the direction of human thought, and has introduced a method and a taste for clearness and
precision, which have profited instruction in all of its departments.
10. ________________________________________________________________
It is almost exclusively in convents that young girls then received what passed for an education.
The religious congregations that devoted themselves to female education were numberless; for
example, the Ursulines founded in 1537; the Association of the Angelics, established in Italy in
1536; and the Order of Saint Elizabeth. All the convents for girls resemble one another. In all of
them woman was educated for heaven, or for a life of devotion. Spiritual exercises formed the only
occupation of the pupils, and study was scarcely taken into account.
11. ________________________________________________________________
That which distinguishes Kant as an educator is that he is preoccupied with the culture of the
faculties much more than with the acquisition of knowledge. He passes in review the different
intellectual forces, and his reflections on each of them might be collected as the elements of an
excellent system of educational psychology. He will criticize the abuse of memory. For the culture
of the understanding, Kant proposes “at first to train it passively to some degree,” by requiring of
the child examples which illustrate a rule, or, on the contrary, the rule which applies to particular
examples. For the exercise of the reason, he recommends the Socratic method and for the
development of all the faculties of the mind, he thinks that the best way of proceeding is to cause
the pupil to be active: — “The best way to comprehend is to do. What we learn the most thoroughly
is what we learn to some extent by ourselves.”

significa anciano, sino antiguo.

The Handmaid’s Tale is constructed around the written record of a woman living in sexual

DESCRIPCIONES:
a) All leaders of nations are constrained by geography. In “one of the best books about geopolitics”
(The Evening Standard), now updated to include geopolitical developments, the author examines
Russia, China, the US, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Japan, Korea, and
Greenland and the Arctic—their weather, seas, mountains, rivers, deserts, and borders—to provide
a context often missing from our political reportage: how the physical characteristics of these
countries affect their strengths and vulnerabilities and the decisions made by their leaders.
b) According to this award-winning author, North America is made up of eleven distinct nations,
each with its own unique historical roots. In American Nations he takes readers on a journey
through the history of our fractured continent, offering a revolutionary and revelatory take on
23
American identity, and how the conflicts between them have shaped our past and continue to mold
our future.
c) From the Middle East and its political instability to China and its economic rise, the vast region
stretching eastward from the Balkans across the steppe and South Asia has been thrust into the
global spotlight in recent years. The author teaches us that to understand what is at stake for the
cities and nations built on these intricate trade routes, we must first understand their astounding
pasts.
d) Whether meadow or mountainside, desert or peat bog, parkland or pasture, suburb or city, the
land is central to our existence. It quite literally underlies and underpins everything. The author
examines what we human beings are doing—and have done—with the billions of acres that
together make up the solid surface of our planet.
e) An epic exploration of the world beneath our feet. The author cuts paths through science,
geography, anthropology, poetry, myth and experience. The reader is pulled underneath Paris,
Arctic ice, forest floors; into deep caves and underground rivers; ancient funeral chambers; even
to underground research stations that look into space.

III. Elementos lingüísticos.
Ej. a journey
a system
a geographer
Ej. The Earth
The planet
1.- Geography is an interdisciplinary field involving the natural and physical sciences and
mathematics.
2.- Geography is the scientific study of the Earth's physical features and how humans affect and

UNIDAD 4
“Words, words, words”: How to make the best of your dictionary?
The battle between humanity and unnatural forces of evil (sometimes man-made, sometimes
supernatural) within an oppressive, inescapable, and bleak landscape is considered to be the true
trademark of a gothic horror novel. These are the core elements that separate gothic horror from
its cousin, gothic romance.
The Victorian era (1837-1901) produced some of the most well-known examples of gothic horror
with the publication of such novels as Wilkie Collins’ The Woman in White (1859) and Bram
Stoker’s Dracula (1897) and novellas such as Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla (1871) and
Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886). H.P. Lovecraft
borrowed heavily from the genre. As a film genre, gothic horror saw a boom during the earlier
days of cinema, with the release of film adaptations of many of these novels, such as Universal’s
Dracula (1931).
Although the genre was named after the gothic castles and crumbling medieval ruins so prevalent
in early novels, many modern gothic novels have moved away from this traditional setting towards
more contemporary locations.
28
III.
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________

Por ejemplo: grow up (crecer), give up (rendirse), sit down (sentarse).
“[G]othic fiction has branched off into many popular subgenres”
[M]any modern gothic novels have moved away from this traditional setting towards more
contemporary locations

He received much-needed support from the Institute for Social Research, led by Max Horkheimer and Theodor
Adorno, but seemed often to feel that the price demanded for such support – allegiance to their particular brand of
dialectical Marxism – was too high. Nevertheless, in 1940, when it became impossible for him to continue to live and
work in Nazi-dominated Europe, his only hope of escape seemed to lie in the visa that the philosopher Horkheimer
(who had relocated his institute from Frankfurt to New York) had secured for him to enter the US.

the land of the sweets, the Sugar Plum fairy. The Sugar Plum Fairy is so impressed with Clara that
she declares a day of celebration. Sweets from all over the world gather at the palace and dance
for Clara. The last to dance is the Nutcracker Prince and the Sugar Plum fairy. When they are done
Clara stands up and starts clapping. The Nutcracker Prince walks up to Clara and tells her it is time
to go. The Nutcracker Prince waves goodbye and fades away.

Clara goes downstairs to check on her nutcracker and finds it under the tree just as she had left it.
So, she puts her nutcracker carefully back under the tree and lies down on the sofa next to the tree.
But she sees giant mice moving towards her followed by a giant mouse queen. In no time at all the
mice and the mouse queen have cornered Clara. Uncle Drosselmeyer appears and casts a spell.
The room gets bigger and the nutcracker has gotten as tall as a real person, he has come alive and
he has brought an army of soldiers with him. The Nutcracker then leads his soldiers courageously
into a battle against the mice.

Out of nowhere, Fritz arrives. He grabs the nutcracker from her hands, holds it in the air, at which

nutcracker breaks! Drosselmeyer tells Clara to leave the nutcracker under the Christmas tree
overnight, and on Christmas morning, her nutcracker will be as good as new. Eventually it’s time
for all the guests to go. Before she goes to bed Clara places her nutcracker under the tree.
5.____________________________________________________________________________
Eventually the Nutcracker and the mouse queen face each other. The mouse queen stabs The
Nutcracker in the ribs. The mouse queen laughs and raises her sword to finish off The Nutcracker.
But Clara throws her slipper and hits the mouse queen square in the head. At that moment The
Nutcracker summons up every last bit of energy and thrusts his sword through the mouse queen.
The mouse queen is dead. Clara kneels down beside the wounded Nutcracker and starts to cry. The
Nutcracker thanks Clara for saving him.

usa la expresión used to + verbo en infinitivo.
(The house was old…)
columna

HABILIDADES DE LECTURA EN LENGUA EXTRANJERA INGLÉS CON PROPÓSITOS ACADÉMICOS
(ESP ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES).
interesante será y luego regresar y leer.
