FIVE FACTS STUDENTS AND GRADUATES SHOULD

REMEMBER WHEN DRAFTING THEIR CVS

H aving a good quality CV has never been so

relevant as it is at the moment. The CV is often
the first and only document recruiters have to
Marile Roos evaluate whether a potential applicant will be invited
Project Coordinator:
Employability and training for an interview. Below are five important facts
Career Services Office you should know before submitting your CV for a
particular position.

Companies nowadays make use of Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) in the

1
recruitment process to save time. An ATS automatically scans through CVs and cover
letters to search for certain key words (such as ‘leadership’ or ‘communication’) to
check whether the applicants meet the job criteria. It is therefore advisable to use
some of the key words provided in the company job spec when drafting your CV.

Recruiters are often inundated by CV submissions; they also spend on average only
2
eight seconds on a single CV. As such, CVs need to be kept brief and to the point.
So, keep your CV short, no longer than two pages, unless requested otherwise by
the company.

It is very important to follow application instructions the company provides

3
when applying for a position, for example “please provide a two-page CV with two
references”. Following application instructions shows that you are able to carry out
simple instructions and that you give the company exactly what they are asking for.
Recruiters will disregard applications that are not aligned with the job criteria.

FIVE FACTS STUDENTS AND GRADUATES SHOULD

REMEMBER WHEN DRAFTING THEIR CVS

When applying for a position you need to adjust your CV according to the job
4
specifications provided for the position. This increases your chances of meeting the
job requirements and being selected. It also personalises your CV according to the
job specifications.

You should strive to build a comprehensive CV, preferably from your first year. It is
5
no longer enough only to exhibit a strong academic record to secure a good career.
It is important to take responsibility for your career as soon as possible to make
yourself more employable and to maintain a competitive edge.

Incorporating these five tips when drafting your CV will definitively improve your chances
to be invited for an interview. For more employability and career advice, contact the Career

COMPANY TIPS

COMPANIES’ EMPLOYABILITY TIPS

Professional service network /

Accounting firm

Leah Prinsloo

Three new trends to anticipate in the New World of Work

1. Hybrid working is likely here to stay. We all need to think about what this means for
how we balance life, work, personal time, family and more as the boundaries between
home and work blur more and more each day.
2. Virtual workspaces/places are the new office. With the office becoming redundant as
people work from anywhere, anytime, there’ll be more innovation in virtual spaces
where people connect (think Metaverse) including for work.
3. There’ll be an increased focus on wellness. This dramatic shift in how and where we all
work, including more time online and blurred work/life boundaries will see an upsurge
in the need for physical, mental and emotional support. Companies will prioritise this.

Three LinkedIn profile tips

1. Ensure your profile is complete with a professional photograph – no selfies please.
2. This may seem logical but ensure your profile is free from spelling and grammar
mistakes.
3. Ensure that your profile is focused with key words that are directly linked to your
industry and skills.

Three questions you can expect in an interview

“How would you best describe yourself?”
Here we are looking for open authentic answers that clearly describes who you are as an
individual. Ensure that you answer honestly as these characteristics will likely be explored
in other questions.

TRANSITION FROM STUDENT TO WORK LIFE

Gomolemo Sibeko
BA (LAW) LLB
University of Pretoria (Academic Associate)

How did you experience the transition from academia to your current employment?
It was smooth. The process was made easier by the fact that I am a former UP student, of
course. I am accustomed to UP as an institution of higher learning and feel comfortable with
working in an environment that has nurtured and developed me into a legal professional,
academic and lawyer. The switch from an undergraduate student to a postgraduate and
employee in the biggest department in one of the UP faculties was an exciting but also
challenging change from scholar to professional. I got into the job with confidence and self-
determination, knowing that I prepared myself well and I made the perfect choice from the
onset to acquire my skills, qualifications and competencies at UP.

What tips and advice would you give current students in terms of what they can expect
and/ or better prepare for this transition?
Get involved, be committed and be intentional about what you are doing and who you
want to become. Do not get overwhelmed by the rigors of your course. It gets worse in
the real world. Always understand that the theory you learn in books will find practical
application in real life. Have some fun, but always remember and never lose sight of the
main goal; completing your studies with good grades and being employable. Familiarise
yourself with Career Services, every bit of information they provide you with is free. They
are capable of connecting you with potential employers. Most importantly, network!

How did you experience the transition from academia to your current employment?
The transition from academia to employment is one that involves continuous learning.
Whatever you think you know or however prepared you think you are, always have a
teachable mind. Many of the skills and attributes needed to obtain your degree will also
be needed in the working world. These are discipline, hard work, collaboration and a
willingness to learn.

What tips and advice would you give current students in terms of what they can expect
and/ or better prepare for this transition?
My tips and advice to current students to better prepare for this transition would be to
research the work environment that they would ideally like to be in. This is very important
because for someone to maximise their talents, they need to be in an environment that
encourages their growth. I would also encourage those of you who can manage your time
extremely well to gain as much work experience as possible while studying.

How did you experience the transition from academia to your current employment?
My transition from academia to my current employment was smoother than I would have
expected. The only struggle I can say I had was the working hours. School and university
hours allow for more breathing space and time than work does; especially when you’re
starting out and are still learning how to manage your role.

What tips and advice would you give current students in terms of what they can expect
and/ or better prepare for this transition?
My advice for current students is to always be open to learning from others and asking
for help. It is often hard to put your ego aside and ask for help because those around you
seem to do the tasks easily, but rather ask for help than struggle. For a better transition
I would suggest getting yourself into a routine, more importantly a night-time routine.
This may help you feel like you’re on top of things in your life and allow you not to be
overwhelmed by the big step you have taken in your life.

TRANSITION FROM STUDENT TO WORK LIFE

Rorisang Molekwa
BCom: Human Resource Management
Sefako Engineering

How did you experience the transition from academia to your current employment?
At university, having a set calendar of assignments, tests, and more made it easy to plan
my life, keep on top of all my tasks and enjoy campus life. When I first started working,
planning my life was challenging because new and unexpected tasks and decisions would
land on my desk almost daily and I would have to fit those into my existing schedule of
everyday tasks while still maintaining my personal life and interests. At times I was unable
to maintain balance and was working more than I was engaging with my personal life. I
had to learn to accept the fact that my life would not always be perfectly balanced and
it’s completely normal for that to be the case, especially in the early stages of transition
between academia and work.

What tips and advice would you give current students in terms of what they can expect
and/ or better prepare for this transition?
Soak up every bit of knowledge you can from your lecturers and peers while you are at
university and make sure to write it down! You might be presented with challenges that
require you to apply every bit of knowledge you have accumulated during your university
experience. Having a written record to refresh your memory when needed is extremely
helpful.

EMPLOYMENT EXPERIENCES

TRANSITION FROM STUDENT TO WORK LIFE

Thulaganyo Kola
Bachelor of Political Science, Bachelor of Social Sciences Honours in Sociology
DarkMatter Digital Marketing

How did you experience the transition from academia to your current employment?
Navigating the transition from university to the work environment was a drastic change but
one filled with great lessons that I will continue to use throughout my career. I entered into
the working environment as a marketing research analyst and my duties required practical
problem-solving skills at a much faster pace compared to university. I was able to integrate
well into the workspace by remaining adaptable to the new space I found myself in, simply
asking questions to gain more clarity and ensuring that I never stop learning through every
experience.

What tips and advice would you give current students in terms of what they can expect
and/ or better prepare for this transition?
It is important to be aware that when you enter the workspace, although you are
inexperienced, it does not equate to being incapable. It does take time to get accustomed
to how things are done in a new environment, but as you stay willing to learn, adaptable
and open to what the experience brings, it gets better.

I received insightful advice when I started working, which merely emphasised that in order
not to be overwhelmed by the magnitude of the transition, focus on ‘how’ questions as
opposed to ‘what’ questions. ‘How’ questions enable you to plan an approach to a task,
whereas ‘what’ merely leads you to the bigger picture without a method of getting you there.

Lastly, stay prepared and consciously take note of what you enjoy and what you do
not enjoy so that you may be able to map out your next path in the company you are
employed at.

How did you experience the transition from academia to your current employment?
The transition from academia to my current employment was very interesting; I am
enjoying every moment of it. Going out into the real world is scary at first because it seems
as if you are stuck in academia, and as if you know nothing beyond academia. However, it
is just a matter of time and allowing yourself to grow.

What tips and advice would you give current students in terms of what they can expect
and/ or better prepare for this transition?
My advice would be to be intentional in everything that you do and be authentic. The
world is your oyster; there is so much out there waiting to be explored. Make use of
opportunities and get involved as much as possible and it all starts at university. To better
prepare for this transition, always make life a learning curve and always learn from your
surroundings. You may never know what the world has in store if you; do not take risks

Nyasha Chinembiri

How did you experience the transition from academia to your current employment?
Transition from academia to the workplace was extremely difficult, especially during
the Covid-19 pandemic. I believe I was adequately prepared, from a theoretical point of
view, for the work that I was required to do. However, Covid-19 brought about unique
set of problems that my lecturers could not have prepared me for. During my time at this
company, I have learnt how to adapt to different situations. I have faced many challenges,
as everyone does, however, I believe that my faculty really taught me how to be resilient
and I continue to use this skill every day.

What tips and advice would you give current students in terms of what they can expect
and/ or better prepare for this transition?
I believe that every student should get a part-time job while they are studying. Whether
you work as a House Committee member for your residence or EC member for a society
or faculty house, working part-time is extremely beneficial for any student. It helps nurture
your soft skills, network with people and build valuable relationships, provides a sense of
independence and maturity, helps you learn how to manage your finances, learn how to
manage your time effectively, as well as explore different career paths.

TIPS ON HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL AT A CAREER FAIR

A ttending a career fair provides you with an

opportunity to network with potential employers
and can help with your job search. If you take
advantage of this unique opportunity to speak
directly with recruiters and make a great first
impression, you might find yourself connected with
multiple employers. This may open doors leading to
a job interview or a job offer.

While this might sound exciting, like a walk in the

Project Coordinator: How can you stand out from the crowd, especially
Recruitment & Career Events when there are other potential candidates seeking
Career Services Office
for the attention of employers?

Consider the following top five tips on how to stand out and be successful at
navigating the career fair event.

Introduce yourself with a smile

1
Even if you feel anxious or nervous, approach each employer with a smile and
introduce yourself. When you are smiling and being friendly you convey a more
positive and inviting personality. A simple ‘Hi, I am Thando’ with a smile is enough.
When speaking to a recruiter, make sure you’re engaged, actively listening and
showing an interest in what they have to say.

Exchange contact information

2
The main aim of the career fair events is networking and contacting employers so
you can follow up after the fair. Be prepared to offer your CV/contact details and ask
for the recruiter’s business card/contact information. You should also make sure that
your CV is up-to-date, with no grammar or spelling errors.

TIPS ON HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL AT A CAREER FAIR

Ask relevant questions

3
You should come to the fair with a list of questions ready to go. Just like in a job
interview situation, if you’re asking questions about the organisation, it shows that
you’re interested in the company, which can help make an excellent first impression.
Make sure you think about the questions to ask in advance so that you’re not
scrambling on what to say or ask.

Visit all employer stands

4
Employers are looking for talent and go-getters, so do not limit yourself by thinking
you do not qualify. Engage each employer following the first three tips and see how
many employers you will attract by simply being present, prepared and engaging.

Stay in touch
5
After the career fair, send a thank you email to the employers that you connected
with. You can thank the recruiters for their time and reiterate your interest in the
company or position they have. Make sure each email is personalised and addressed
to the intended recruiter. Ideally you can send the thank you email immediately after
the fair or roughly within 48 hours. Sending a thank you email is important to help
recruiters remember you and help you stand out.

CAREER-PLANNING TIPS FOR STUDENTS AND GRADUATES

Understanding job profiles

When planning your career—ideally before enrolling for a specific degree—it is important
to take note of the different available job opportunities in the current market. Ask yourself
the following important questions: What do I want to do for a living? What would I be
expected to do daily? Which qualities and skills do I need to be successful at this job? The
answers to these questions are important for the career planning process and will help
students and graduates to take responsibility for their career journeys.

Many students fail to do proper research before embarking on their studies. This often
causes confusion and feelings of uncertainty about what to expect of their future careers.
Graduates often report unmet expectations when evaluating their first jobs, and one
reason for this is that they failed to conduct proper research on what the actual job entails
and consequently entered a profession without understanding what their responsibilities
would be.

An excellent resource for prospective students and graduates is the UK-based

which not only allows you to research more
than 400 job profiles, but also provides a breakdown of what is involved in these key
professions and the set of skills required for each.

My strongest advice is to clean up your social media history as soon as possible. Any tweet
you regret or Facebook post that you shouldn’t have sent, go and delete it now. Scroll back
through your timeline as if you were sitting in an interview and it was up on the screen
in front of everyone. It may not be fair, and you may feel you have a right to express
yourself, but it’s an employer’s market. There are plenty of candidates for roles these days

TRACKING SYSTEM (ATS)

Curriculum Vitae and cover letter are often
being ignored, or not even read by prospective
Project Coordinator:
Employability and training employers? It can be very disheartening to receive a
Career Services Office series of job application rejections or to not get any
feedback at all.

Due to the sheer volume of applications, many companies, in particular the bigger
companies use an application tracking system (ATS) or ‘Curriculum Vitae robot’ before
your CV even reaches the recruiters. ATS software assists in organising and filtering job
applications to make the recruitment process more manageable for recruiters. In this way
many applications are discarded based on predetermined set criteria.

For those seeking employment, it is imperative to be aware of the use of application

tracking systems in the recruitment process and how to approach the application process
in an ATS friendly manner.

Tips to consider

Overuse of formatting
It is best to keep your CV formatting simple. In order for the ATS software to scan your CV
it will convert it to a “simple text only” file. Removing all elaborate formatting, and in certain
instances scrabbling the content in such a way that it cannot scan the relevant information,
may lead to your CV being rejected.

• Avoid using too many fonts, use capitalisation sparingly and be careful of using less
common fonts.
• Avoid tables, graphics, headers and footers, as well as logos and photos.
• Avoid the use of columns.
• Avoid hyperlinks and rather paste the URLs.
• Use standard bullets.
72 | Graduate Career Guide 2022/23

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE FEARED APPLICATION

TRACKING SYSTEM (ATS)

Use of key words

It is very important to review the job description and to strategically use the key words
provided in the job description, as the application tracking system will most likely be
searching for some of the key words mentioned. However, do not just reiterate these
- make sure you also give specific examples of your accomplishments, skills and work
experience.

Choose the right file type

Save your CV and cover letter in word format, as it is considered to be the most user-
friendly file type when ATS software is being used. It is important to take note of the
application instructions. If the company requests a specific type of format, for example pdf
format, this criterion should always be followed to avoid being rejected by the company.

Avoid applying for many roles in the same company

The ATS software will be able to pick up when you apply for multiple roles. It is advisable
to not randomly apply for many roles. If roles are very similar, you can apply, but make
sure each application is adjusted according to the specific position applied for. Randomly
applying for any role will convey the idea that you have a lack of awareness of your skills or
it will be doubtful whether you really are interested in a particular position.

Submit to a Free ATS Scanner

To test whether your CV is ATS compliant,
submit your CV to a free ATS scanner
such as jobscan.co

industry leaders.

Reflection on what you have learnt from completing the course

Firstly, I would like to say I highly recommend students to participate on completing the
LinkedIn courses. This does not only enhance profession skills, but it allows you to advance
your career. I learnt a lot about enhancing my profile, for instance creating a summary
that introduces me to the world and the working environment. If I am being honest, I
would not have been where I am if it was not for the courses offered. I got a chance to
even learn about how to answer common interview questions. Body language is the most
important aspect that should be taken into consideration when you have an interview to
attend. Always make sure to show them what you really are because that is what they need
to hear. I really gained lots of skills during and after the course, and my advice is that all
students who are looking to be successful need to take LinkedIn courses offered by the

I encouraged myself to do so, I realised what a resource that course was, and

2. The “Rock your LinkedIn profile” course provided me with the knowledge on how
to structure my profile for success. The LinkedIn profile creates the first impression
and gives an overview of what skills and experiences I can potentially bring to any

Blyde Botanics is a plant extract manufacturing company that produced three scientifically
proven, quality-controlled actives from three unique indigenous species. These plant
extracts are applied to the treatment of acne (Actify), ageing (WrinkLess) and periodontal
health (NatalFresh). The company was co-founded by postgraduate students from the
University of Pretoria, Bianca Payne and Isa Lambrechts, under the guidance of Prof.

products. The company achieves its aims through an ongoing partnership strategy with
national and international companies such as Letago Pharmaceuticals, MarpeMed, Esse
Skincare, Dhanvantari Nano Ayushadi, Kalahari and Johnson & Johnson. The company
received a TuksNovation seed fund grant valued at R75 000 which supported the
development process that included licensing of the technology, permit application and the
take-off agreement with formulators.

TuksWaste success story matrix

TuksWaste recycles paper, cardboard and polystyrene substance. The project aims to
provide sustainable waste management to address landfill challenges and empower waste
pickers by providing them with business training skills. The project will further provide a
central location where pickers will be collected and transported to waste manufacturing
facilities; an important aspect to address the long distance travel for pickers to such sites.
The objective of the project is to reduce waste challenges in landfills by turning waste into
end products, while also creating fair remuneration for waste pickers and eliminating their
exploitation.

The TuksWaste team was selected from the TuksNovation portfolio to be part of a Blue
