SPANISH TRAIL ASSESSMENT REPORT

The data gathered is based on the actual assessment of personnel from MTCAS and
MDRRMS who trekked the Spanish trail starting from Sitio Guay, Poblacion, Kabayan until
Sitio Timbac, Pacso, Kabayan. The assessment of the trail started at 7:00 am and ended at
12:30 pm last January 19, 2023. MyTracks app was used to track the trail while GeoCam app
was used for geotagging probable rest areas, sightseeing areas and hazardous areas along the
trail. As per data gathered from the tracking application, a total of 11.59 kilometers was
trekked for 5 – 6 hours ascending to Timbac Rock Shelters from entry point at Sitio Guay,
Poblacion.

At present, the Spanish trail at Sitio Guay, Poblacion has history of landslide (Fig. 1)
based on the assessment and photo taken. The trail, particularly at Sitio Guay, Poblacion to
Sitio Kemesen, Kabayan Barrio is narrow combined with wild shrubs covering the trail (Fig.
2), loose gravel from rock slides (Fig, 3) and absence of handrails specially at the hazardous
areas. The part of the trail starting at the eastern part of Sitio Kemesen was converted into a
one lane gravel road as shown on (Fig. 4.) The gravel road then connected to a concrete road
located at Sitio Alekak, Kabayan Barrio (Fig. 5) and continued until Sitio Timbac, Pacso. A
proposed 1st rest area for trekkers was identified as shown on Fig. 6 at Sitio Alekak. Another
possible 1st rest area is proposed at Sitio Akongeb (Fig. 7) and 2nd rest area at Sitio Champeg
(Fig. 8). As for the proposed 3rd and 4th rest areas, it is located at Sitio Dibang (Fig. 9) which
can also be a sightseeing area at the same time and at the upper portion of the same sitio (Fig.
10) respectively. Another sightseeing area that provides a panoramic view of Kabayan is
proposed at Sitio Timbac (Fig. 11) before going to Timbac Rock Shelters.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. Rerouting of trail particularly at the entry part due to the presence of landslide which
might happened again in the event that another continuous heavy downpour or
earthquake will occur
2. Clearing of loose gravel and wild shrubs causing safety hazards to trekkers
3. Widening particularly at the narrow part of the trail
4. Installation of handrails along the narrow part of the trail
5. Converting the trail from Sitio Guay to Sitio Kemsen into a footpath as it is also being
used by residents of Poblacion and Kabayan Barrio
6. Establishment of public restrooms along the trail
7. Setting up of directional signage
8. Clearing of tall grass along the concrete road starting from Sitio Akongeb, Kabayan
Barrio to Sitio Timbac, Pacso which resulted to blind curves
9. Rerouting of trail starting from Sitio Akongeb, Kabayan Barrio to Sitio Timbac, Pacso
as the road is traversed by vehicles which poses danger to ascending tourists
10. Organize tour guides and/or porters based at Poblacion, Kabayan
