1. Baby chickens, like all baby birds, require a constant source of food. As chick grow, more energy
is required for daily activities, and their food requirements increase. The following data table reports
the average food eaten by a group of 10 chickens over a 5-day period.

Baby Chicken Food Consumption

Questions

Day Food Consumed (g) 1. Identify the independent and dependent

variables. Independent is the amount of days
and dependent variable is the food
consumed.
0 0.0
2. How much grain will the chicks eat on day
6? About 18.2 Grams
1 1.0
3. On day 7? About 22.4 grams

4. What type of relation does the graph

represent? A direct relationship
2 3.2
3 6.5

4 10.6

5 15.4

2. The data below summarizes the results of a scientific experiment on the effects of a growth
hormone (gibberellic acid) on plant height. A 0.1 molar solution was used in all experiments.

Gibberellic Acid and Plant Height

Questions

Gibberellic Acid (0.1 M) Plant Height at 1. Identify the independent and

1 Week (cm) dependent variables. The
(mL) independent variable is the amount
of gibberellic acid and the plant
height at a week is the dependent
variable.
20 18.5
2. Estimate the plant height at 10
mL gibberellic acid. Between 15 and
16 centimeters tall
30 20.7
3. Estimate the plant height at 25
mL? Between 19 and 21
centimeters tall.
40 45.2
50 62.3 4. Explain why the plant height at
60 mL is not consistent with the rest
of the data. The plant height at 60
mL is not consistent with the rest
60 10.6 of the data because the current
rate from 10-50 is that the plant
height increases, but at 60 mL, it
decreases lower than the starting
value.

3. A team of scientists wanted to test the effects of temperature on the germination rate of pinto
beans. They placed three sets of 100 pinto bean seeds in temperature controlled chambers:
Chamber A was set at 15o C, chamber B at 20oC, and chamber C at 25oC. Their results are shown in
Table 1 below:

Germination Rates of Pinto Beans

Questions

Day % Germination % Germination % Germination 1. Identify the independent

and dependent variables.
(15o C) (20o C) (25o C) The independent variable
is the day number and the
dependent variable is the
germination percentage at
0 0 0 0 different temperatures.

2. Compare and contrast

the growth rate of pinto
2 2 10 10 beans at the different
temperatures. At 15 degrees
4 10 30 50 Celsius, the rate of growth
of the pinto beans is the
slowest of the 3. At 20
degrees Celsius, the pinto
6 20 40 80 beans grew at a steady
rate that wasn’t the lowest
but wasn’t the highest. The
growth rate at 25 degrees
8 20 60 90 Celsius grew the fastest
out of the 3 during the
same time frame.

10 35 70 90 3. Summarize the
experimental results.

Pinto beans grew better

when the temperature
during the % Germination
was higher.
