No en todos los casos parece tan obvio el origen literario del cuento,
por ser muy vulgar la anécdota y no presentar en el texto de Mey
ningún rasgo que arguya parentesco directo con otras versiones. Tal
sucede con la fábula LVI El convidado acudido, que figura, aunque
con distintos accesorios, en el cuadernillo manuscrito de los
Cuentos de Garibay y en la Floresta Española[227]. Cotejando la
versión de Mey que pongo á continuación con la de Santa Cruz, que
va por nota, se palpará la diferencia entre el estilo conciso y agudo
del toledano y la manera más pintoresca, verbosa y festiva del
impresor de Valencia.
«Francisco Quintañon vezino de Bilbao, combidó, segun
acostumbrava cada año, el dia del Santo de su nombre, en el qual
havia nacido, a algunos amigos. Los quales truxeron al combite a
Luis Loçano, estudiante, hombre gracioso, bien entrañado, y que si
le llamavan a un combite, no dezia de no, y por caer aquel año en
Viernes el combite, hubo de ser de pescado. A lo qual proveyó el
Quintañon en abundancia y muy bueno. Sentados a la mesa, dieron
a cada uno su porcion de vesugos, congrios y otros pescados tales.
Sólo a Loçano le dieron sardinas, y no sé qué pescadillos menudos,
por ventura por no haver sido de los llamados, sino que le havian
traido. Como él vio aquella menudencia en su plato, en lugar de
comer como hazian los otros, tomava cada pescadillo, y llegavasele
al oido, y bolviale despues al plato. Reparando en aquello los
combidados, y preguntandole por qué hazia aquéllo? respondio:
«Havrá seys años, que pasando un hermano mio a Flandes, y
muriendo en el viaje, echaron su cuerpo en el mar; y nunca he
podido saber dónde vino a parar, y si tuvo su cuerpo sepultura o no,
y por eso se lo preguntava a estos pececillos, si por dicha lo sabian.
Todos me responden en conformidad que no saben tal, porque en
ese tiempo no havian ellos aun nacido: que se lo pregunte a esos
otros pescados mayores que hay en la mesa, porque sin duda me
daran relacion». Los combidados lo echaron en risa, entendiendo la
causa porque lo dezia; y Quintañon, echando a los moços la culpa
que lo havrian hecho por descuydo, mandó traerle un plato de lo
mejor que havia.
