Preface
This document. Library of Standard BQ Descriptions for Malaysian Civil Engineering Standard Method of
Measurement, is to be read in conjunction with the Malaysian Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement
or MyCESMM. The development of this Library is in response to a common need to assist measurers in simplifying
their tasks when describing the work items found in MyCESMM. It has been designed to provide wide-ranging
options of list of descriptions of work items from which measurers can extract to facilitate efficiency in the
preparation of the BQ.
This Library features a standard library of descriptions in a BQ template and is structured according to the
work classification covering all the classes of work in MyCESMM. Each standard BQ descriptions has been assigned
a standard code number consisting of a letter and not more than three digits. The letter corresponds to the
class in the work classification in which the item occurs and the digits depict the position of the item in the
first division, second division and third division of the respective classes of work. The unit of measurement
for each standard BQ descriptions is also stated in accordance with MyCESMM. The standard BQ descriptions
coupled with the standard code number is expected to contribute towards future initiatives in computerizing
the preparation of the Bill of Quantities for civil engineering works.
This Library would ease the user of MyCESMM in preparing the Bill of Quantities and at the same time it can
also be used as a checklist as it contains a comprehensive listing of standard BQ descriptions that can be
easily referenced by measurers for extracting item descriptions. Users of MyCESMM can confidently source
from the Library, the standard BQ descriptions together with the standard code number and undertake minor
editing to suit the project. A softcopy of the Library of Standard BQ Descriptions is also provided to complement
this document.
Measurers will appreciate the Library and the corresponding softcopy as an additional reference to simplify
the measurement work, particularly in describing work items, thus mitigating any potential contractual disputes
over work items descriptions which can happen in the field.
The MyCESMM Technical Working Group has been invaluable in its contribution towards the development of
this Library and CIDB would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and extend its sincere appreciation
to the Group for its guidance, suggestions, and comments.

Descriptions For MyCESMM
1.0 Introduction
In preparing a BQ, the normal way is for the user to write the item description and then search for the
corresponding code numbers from the MyCESMM. Different users will have different ways and styles of
writing the item description and from feedback elsewhere, the most difficult part is to allocate the code
number for the item. This Library of Standard BQ Descriptions for MyCESMM is prepared in a standard
spreadsheet format where every relevant item in the MyCESMM is listed together with the code numbers.
All the user needs to do is to copy out the item together with the code numbers and carry out minor editing
to suit the project.
2.0 Format of the Library of Standard BQ Descriptions
The format of the Library is as shown below:
The first column "Item No." has been added to allow the user to number the BQ items in series and synchronise
with the sections of work as described in Clause 5.2 of this MyCESMM. The "sen" has been deleted from t he
amount column as in this era of computer technology, the amount column will be formatted with formulas
and the "sen" column will be redundant.
3.0 How to use the Library of Standard BQ Descriptions

The Library of Standard BQ Descriptions is in one spreadsheet file and contains multiple sheets for all
the classes of work in MyCESMM for ease of file management. The procedures to use the Library are as
follows:
(a) Open up a standard spreadsheet file and format it to the Library column spacing;

(b) Click on the relevant class of work and scroll down until the desired item is seen. The user may need to
refer to the MyCESMM for a quick reference on the item number in the First Division of each class;
(c) Copy the required item in the user spreadsheet file;
(d) The item description serves only as a guide and is with "[. ......]" or "(.....)" which requires the user to carry
out some form of editing to suit the particular project:
(e) After the editing is done, the '"[.......]" or "(.....)" should be removed;
(f) Multiple items with the same code numbers are indicated by e.g. D525.1, D525.2 and D525.3. When only
the second and third items, i.e. D525.2 and D525.3 are required the code numbers should also be changed
to D525.1 and D525.2 as shown below:

(g) In the above example, if only [100 mm square] direct shear box test is required, the code number shall be

4.0 How to build up the Bill of Quantities
The way to build up a BQ using the Library is best illustrated using an example of the construction of an open
top water tank as shown below:
