Adding Inline Components with


OpenPlant PID
This workbook contains exercises to place a control station, then replace the valves of the control station. Next,
the user will place pipeline insulation and place inline components. Then the user will place a drain line and a
reducer which will change the data of the pipeline. Finally, the user will move an inline component and change
the actuator of a control valve using OpenPlant PID CONNECT Edition.

Description and Objectives

Course Description
This is the third of five courses for the OpenPlant PID CONNECT Edition User.

This workbook contains exercises to place a control station, then replace the valves of the control station. Next, the user will place pipeline
insulation and place inline components. Then the user will place a drain line and a reducer which will change the data of the pipeline. Finally,
the user will move an inline component and change the actuator of a control valve using OpenPlant PID CONNECT Edition.

Installing the OP Training Project
A PID has been provided for your convenience. You will need to place this PID into the WorkSet directory shown below.

1. Make sure all applications are closed.


2. Unzip OPPID_Imperial_TRNC03401-10001.zip to a temporary directory.
3. Place PID1.dgn into the C:\ProgramData\Bentley\OpenPlant CONNECT
Edition\Configuration\Workspaces\WorkSpace\WorkSets\OpenPlantImperial\WorkFiles\Models\PID folder.
Exercise 01: Placing a Control Valve
You will learn how to build a control station on pipeline L103. You will start the control station by placing a control valve.

1. Launch OpenPlant PID.


2. Open PID1.dgn.
3. Window into the left side of the drawing above P-100A.
4. Select Piping > Common Tools > Stretch.
5. Using a crossing window, move the pumps down.

6. Select Instruments > Instrument Galleries > Control Valves from the ribbon menu.

7. Select Control Valve from the Component Gallery and place on pipeline L103. The following
dialog opens.
a. Select Gate as the Valve Type and Diaphragm Actuator as the Actuator type.

2. Place the valve on the pipelines L103 and rotate


actuator toward the left. The following dialog opens:
a. Select GATE CONTROL VALVE, FLANGED, RAISED-
FACE, 150LB.
b. Click OK.

The Gate Control Valve dialog opens.

a. Type FV in the Device Type Code field.


b. Type 100 in the Number field.
c. Click OK.

The Place Instrument Oval Annotation dialog opens.

a. Select Discrete from the Bubble Types.


b. Set Leader Line to ON.
3. Place the bubble on the upper side of the valve.

4. Draw the leader line to the control valve as shown.


Note: A right-click will automatically draw the leader line back to the
center of the valve.

Exercise 02: Placing Gate Valves
In this exercise we will add the gate valves to the control station.

1. Select Piping > Piping Galleries > Valves from the ribbon menu.

2. Select Gate from the Component Gallery.


3. Place the gate valve on the pipelines upstream of the control valve.
The Gate Valve dialog opens.

a. Click OK.
2. Place the gate valve on the pipelines downstream of the control valve.

3. Select Element Selection, to end the command.

Exercise 03: Drawing a Bypass Line
In this exercise we will draw the bypass line around the control valve.

1. Window into the area around the control station.

2. Select Tools > Managers > Drawing from the ribbon menu.
a. Select the Settings tab.
b. Clear the Tag Dialog Prompt.
Note: This will temporarily disable the tag dialogs while we place a bypass line.
c. Click OK.
4. Expand the Piping > Piping Galleries > Piping from the ribbon menu.
5. Select Minor from the Component Gallery, the Place Pipe Run dialog opens.

6. Draw the minor line as shown below bypassing the control station.
7. Select Tools > Managers > Drawing from the ribbon menu.
a. Select the Settings tab.
b. Set the Tag Dialog Prompt.
c. Click OK.

Exercise 04: Adding the Bypass Valve
In this exercise you will add a globe valve to the bypass line.

1. Select Piping > Piping Galleries > Valves from the ribbon menu.

2. Select Globe from the Component Gallery.


3. Place the valve on the bypass line beneath the control valve.
4. Select the GLOBE VALVE, 150LB, RF,CS valve and click OK in the Globe Valve dialog.

Note: You may need to move the globe valve size annotation to below the valve for clarity.
5. Select Element Selection, to end the command.

Exercise 05: Place another Control Station
In this exercise we will place a second control station.

1. Window into the area below the Furnace H-100.


2. Place a control valve (GATE CONTROL VALVE, FLANGE, RAISED-FACE, 150 LB) with a Diaphragm Actuator on pipeline BG108.
3. Tag the valve TV-100 with a Service of FG and a System of H.
4. Place a flanged gate valve on either side of the control valve.
Note: Leave a larger gap between gate valves and control valve than
in the last exercise.

Exercise 06: Placing Reducers
In this exercise we will add reducers between the gate valves and the control valve. Adding reducers will change the
properties of the pipe and the valves.

1. Select Piping > Piping Galleries > Fittings from the ribbon menu.

2. Select Concentric Reducer from the Component Gallery.


3. Place the reducer on the pipelines between the left gate valve and the control valve, the Split Run
dialog opens.

4. Select the first HTF-FG-BG108-EX-OPM, P1 as it is the default pipe run to be modified.


a. Click OK, to open the Pipe Run dialog.

You may have to expand the details.

b. Expand the Operating Conditions category.


c. Select 3” from the Size list.
d. Click OK. A cloud has been placed around the annotation tag indicating a
change.

e. Click Apply Spec Change in the InRun Spec Validation dialog. The properties of the control valve have changed and require a new
spec.

6. Place a second reducer on the pipeline between the control station and the gate valve on the right.
a. Select the top HTF-FG-BG108-EX-OPM, P2.
b. Click OK.
c. Expand the Operating Conditions category.
d. Select 4” from the Size list.

5. Click OK.

6. Click Apply Spec Change in the InRun Spec Validation dialog.


7. Select Fit View.
8. The software placed a cloud around the annotation for pipeline BG-108. This is a reminder to confirm that the annotation is still correct.
Once confirmed, delete the cloud.

Exercise 07: Replacing Valves
In this exercise we will replace the gate valves with plug valves.

1. Window into the area around the TV-100 control station.


2. Right-click on the gate valve to the left of the control valve TV-100.
3. Select Replace from the context menu, the following dialog
opens.

a. Select the Plug valve.


b. Click OK.
3. Repeat for the gate valve on the right side of the control
valve.

Exercise 08: Placing Check Valves
In this exercise we will place check valves near the pumps.

1. Window into the area around the pumps.

2. Select Piping > Piping Galleries > Valves from the ribbon menu.

3. Select Check.
4. Insert a check valve on the P-100 discharge line.
Note: If your pipelines does not fall on a grid line, change the locks to Axis and Nearest prior to valve placement.
5. Click Cancel on the EX-OPM spec dialog..

6. Click OK on the Check Valve dialog.

The check valve is placed in the direction of the flow.

7. Place a second check valve on the P-100A discharge line.


8. Select Element Selection, to end the Check Valve command.
You will now place a gate valve next to the check valves.

9. Select Gate.
10. Place the flanged gate valve downstream of the check valves.
11. Click OK on the Gate Valve dialog.
12. Select Element Selection, to end the Gate Valve command.

Your drawing should now appear similar to the figure below.

13. Place an additional Gate Valve on the suction line of each pump.

Exercise 09: Placing Inline Fittings
In this exercise we will place a strainer and add miscellaneous valves to the PID.

1. Select Piping > Piping Galleries > Fittings from the ribbon menu.

2. Select Y-Strainer.
3. Place the strainer downstream of the gate valves as shown.

4. Window into an area around the heat exchangers EX-100 and EX-100A.

5. Place a Gate Valve on the pipeliness entering and exiting the exchangers as shown below.

6. Window into the bottom of the furnace H-100.


7. Select the pipeline BG108.

8. Using the center handle, pull down to straighten the pipeline.
9. Place a Plug Valve on pipeline BG108 leaving the vessel.
10. Select Instruments > Instrument Galleries > Control Valves from the ribbon menu.

a. Select Control Valve from the Component Gallery the following dialog opens.
b. Select a Ball from the Valve Types list.
c. Select a Cylinder Operator from the Actuators list.
4. Place the valve upstream of the plug valve.
Note: The actuator is now ghosted on your cursor for you to place.
5. Place the actuator stem on the top of the ball valve bubble.
a. Select BALL CONTROL VALVE, FLANGE, RAISED-FACE, 150LB in the Spec dialog.
b. Click OK.
c. Tag the valve ESV-100 with a Service of FG and a System of H.
d. Click OK.
5. Place the instrument bubble.

Exercise 10: Placing Pipeline Insulation
In this exercise we will place insulation on the pipelines.

1. Window into the area around the Heat Exchangers EX-100 and EX-100A.

2. Select Piping > Piping Galleries > Pipe Services from the ribbon menu.

3. Select Piping Insulation.


4. Place the insulation on L135 upstream of the gate valve.
5. Place another insulation on L105 downstream of the gate valve.
6. Select the pipeline L135.
7. Right-click and select Properties.
8. Select P1.
9. Expand the Operating Conditions category.
10. Type PE in the Insulation Material field.
11. Type 2 in the Insulation Thickness field.
12. Repeat for the insulation on pipeline L105.

Exercise 11: Miscellaneous Valves
In this exercise we will finish placing valves.

1. Window into the area in the lower left corner of the drawing where pipeline L100 enters the sheet.
2. Place a flanged Gate Valve on the line.

3. Select Piping > Piping Galleries > Fittings from the ribbon menu.

4. Place the Open Figure 8 Blind just downstream of the gate valve.

5. Place another flanged Gate Valve downstream of the blind.

Exercise 12: Moving a Valve
In this exercise we will move a valve.

1. Select Element Selection.


2. Click on the last gate valve you inserted.
The valve highlights.

3. Grab the center handle and slide left or right along the pipelines.
4. Release in a new location.
The valve will move and it will break the line at the new location.

Exercise 13: Placing a Drain Line with Valve
In this exercise we will be adding a drain line between the check valve and the pump.

Note: You may need to edit the piping and valves to make room for the new drain line.

1. Window into the area around the pumps P-100 and P-100A.

2. Select Tools > Managers > Drawing from the ribbon menu.
a. Select the Settings tab.
b. Clear the Tag Dialog Prompt.
c. Click OK.
4. Expand the Piping > Piping Galleries > Piping from the ribbon menu.

5. Select Vent/Drain.
6. Place a drain line on the pipeline of the suction side of the pumps as shown.

7. Select Element Selection.

8. Select the drain line.


9. Select Properties.
a. Expand the Operating Conditions category.
b. Select 3/4” from the Size list.
3. Repeat for the other drain line.

Exercise 14: Placing a Valve by Endpoint
In this exercise we will place the valve by its endpoint.

1. Select Gate Valve, the following dialog opens.


2. Select CP1 from the Insert By list.
Note: CP1 is the input point on the left side of the valve and CP2 is the output point on the right
side of the valve.

The valve is highlighted by it’s end point instead of it’s center point.

3. Place a flanged valve at the end of the drain line.

4. Window into the area around the blind on pipeline L100.


5. Place a drain line between the blind and the upstream gate valve.
6. Edit the drain line to change the size to 3/4”.

7. Place a flanged gate valve on the drain line.

8. Reset the Tag Prompt Dialog option.


9. Select Fit View.

Exercise 15: Move the Drain Lines
In this exercise we will move the drain lines to make room for a reducer.

1. Click on the drain line upstream of P-100.


2. Select a handle on the drain line and move to the left.
The line and the valve both move to the new location.

Exercise 16: Placing a Reducer
In this exercise we will place reducers near the pumps.

Note: You may need to perform simple editing to perform the next exercise by stretching or moving the pipelines,
pumps and valves.

1. Select Piping > Piping Galleries > Fittings from the ribbon menu.

2. Select Concentric Reducer.


3. Place the reducer between the drain
and the pump P-100.
4. Select the first HTF-P-L100-EX-OPM
P2.
5. Click OK.
6. Select 8” from the Size list.
Note: You may need to move the
reducer annotation.

7. Repeat for pump P-100A.


8. Select the first HTF-P-L100-EX-OPM
P1.

Exercise 17: Moving the Reducer
In this exercise we will move the reducer.

1. Select the reducer on the inlet side of P-100.


2. Click on the center handle.
3. Drag the reducer to the left of the drain line.
4. The piperuns have retained their connectivity to the reducer.
5. Delete the cloud.

Exercise 18: Adding a Valve Actuator
In this exercise we will add and a valve actuator.

1. Select the Gate Valve on pipeline L100 at the left edge of the sheet.
2. Right-click and select Properties from the context menu.
3. Select the General Info category.
4. Select Handwheel from the Actuator Display Label field.
The valve has updated to show the Handwheel.

5. Save the drawing and close OpenPlant PID.
