METHOD OF STATEMENT

FOR CHB WORKS

A. MATERIALS:

CONCRETE HOLLOW BLOCKS

- Also known as concrete masonry unit must be supplied by approved

manufacturer & manufactured for at least 2 weeks before using.
- 200 mm x 200 mm x 400 mm for external walls
- 150 mm x 200 mm x 400 mm for internal walls
12mmØ → Deformed Horizontal Bars @ 600mm O.C.
12mmØ → Deformed Vertical Bars @ 800mm O.C.
One (1) – 16mmØ deformed bar to be provided around all openings
Portland Cement
G.I. wire # 16
Sand – shall be from fresh water, river or pit & must be free from dust, clay,
loam, mica, shale & other organic matter.

B. INSPECTION:

1. Variation in dimension of CHB unit : ± 2mm in any direction

2. Grout mixture : 1 part cement to 3 parts sand
3. Joint width : 10mm ± 2mm
4. Appearance : No deterioration or damage
5. Maximum height of installation : 2.5m per day
6. Lintel beams : To be provided on all openings
7. Stiffeners : Horizontal distance ≤ 4.00sq.m.
: Coverage area ≤ 12.00sq.m.
8. Cross section : 300mm depth x width of CHB
WALL with 2-16mmØ rebars
(for 200mm CHB), 2-12mmØ
rebars (for 150mm CHB) &
10mmØ Hoops @ 200mm O.C.
9. Additional Rebars : 1-16mmØ rebar @ all corners
1-16mmØ around all openings

C. PREPARATION:

1. Clean the area in consideration. Remove all organic,

compressive and expandable materials.
2. Prepare a cement mortar with a mixture of 1:3 (1 part
cement to 3 parts sand by volume).
3. Set-up the necessary scaffolding for the work.
4. Install vertical guides and string line with horizontal
distance of 210 mm to ensure plumbness and alignment.
5. Place necessary protection on adjacent structures
especially on delicate ones.

D. PREPARATION:

MIXING
- Mixing ratio should be one part cement to 3 parts sand by
volume.
- Cement mortar should be hand-mixed on a non-absorbent
platform with kerb.
- Materials should be mixed well in small quantities while dry
before adding water and should be used within one hour after mixing.
- Mortar boards & mixing platforms are to be cleaned off after
using and any mortar leftover be removed.

E. INSTALLATION:
1. Place mortar base with a height of 100mm from the
bottom & install the first CHB layer.
- Initially place the string line level to 310 mm mark as guide
for the top of the first CHB layer to provide space for the 100mm
mortar bedding.
- Place sufficient mortar as bedding for CHB (beyond 100mm
height) such that excess mortar shall be forced out on the side when the
CHB is pressed downward by tapping it until the required by the string
line is attained.

2. Install second CHB layer.

- Place string line to the next 210mm mark.
- Fill up all cells of the layer CHB with mortar to at least
50mm above its top level to provide bedding.
- Lay the second layer above and tapping it to compress the
mortar above the first layer until the top of the second layer is in the
line with the string level. Cement mortar normally goes out at the sides
of the CHB – scrap excess mortar along the sides of the CHB.

3. Install succeeding CHB layers to a maximum height of 2.5m per day.

- Reinforcement should be as follows:
Vertical : 12mmØ @ 800mm O.C.
Horizontal : 12mmØ @ 600mm O.C.
Additional Vertical Bar : 1-16mmØ @ all corners
Additional Rebar : 1-16mmØ @ all opening
- Horizontal CHB rebars shall be embedded into columns by
drilling to at least 100mm and anchor using structural epoxy.
- While laying, plaster on the joints of the walls shall remain
flushed until the mortar becomes thumb-print hard. Then apply tool
joint to a hard concave finish. Joint width should be maintained
uniform at 10mm with a tolerance of ± 2mm.
- Bed and grout other items coming in contact with masonry.
- Make the necessary cutting and patching of masonry as
required for the work.
- Where adjustment shall be made after the mortar has set,
CHB shall be removed and mortar shall be replaced with a fresh one.
- Provide stiffener columns at distance of not more than 3.0m.
- Provide lintels (300mm depth x width of CHB) with CHB
starter bars on all openings for a coverage area of not more than
12sq.m. with 2-16mmØ rebars (for 200mm CHB), 2-12mmØ rebars
(for 150mm CHB) and 10mmØ hoops @ 200mm O.C.

4. Top Joint: Allow a 100 mm space at the top of masonry unit for
concreting.
- Install form then cast concrete.
- Strip forms and cut excess concrete along the side.

5. Remove excess mortar & clean the area after work.

F. SAFETY MEASURES:

1. For proper identification, workers should wear the

proper uniform.
2. Personal Protective Equipment such as hardhat, safety
shoes or rubber boots and gloves should be worn while inside the
premises.
3. Barricade and place caution signs around the working
area.
4. Wear body harness while working at high elevations.
5. Maintain cleanliness at working area.
