Reflection Paper: BASIC FIRST AID FOR DANCERS

Every time I attend a class for this subject, I gradually keep on understanding the importance of injury
prevention as it maintains longevity and peak performance in the field. During this day, we had the
opportunity to participate in a class focused on the basics of first aid for dancers. Throughout the lesson, we
explored various techniques and tools, including triangular bandages, Mueller tape, and kinesiology tape, to
mitigate injury risks and promote dancers' well-being.

One of my biggest takeaways from the class was the significance on proactive measures to prevent injuries
before and after they occur. While dance is an art form that showcases movement and expression, it also
places its own unique physical demands on the body. Therefore, I think it was really important for us to be
taught on how to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to identify potential injury risks and address
them.

The use of triangular bandages was the first thing that was taught to us. The materials we were asked to bring
had a myriad of ways to provide support and stabilization for injured body parts. I learned that just like how
we dancers present ourselves on stage to perform, beauty also matters in how we apply these injury
preventions. As dancers, we often push our bodies to the limit, and having the ability to administer basic first
aid using readily available materials can make a significant difference in the outcome of an injury.

The application of the Mueller tape is another essential component of our injury prevention discussion. I
found this the most challenging part of the lesson. There shouldn’t be any folds in the tape, the taping should
be tight enough to support the injury but not too much that it doesn’t give room for the leg to breathe. Its
allows for dynamic support, making it ideal for addressing common dance-related injuries such as ankle
sprains. This is something that I definitely need more practice on, out of all the three methods we were
taught. Through hands-on practice, we were able to familiarize ourselves with proper taping techniques,
ensuring optimal support and comfort for us dancers while minimizing the risk of injuries.

The Kinesiology Tape (KT) section was the one I was most intersted in, possibly beacuse of its price or its
aesthetic appeal, but beyond that I was curious on how it functions and how it is applied. What I understood
is that Kinesiology tape can promote faster recovery and improved performance. Learning how to apply
kinesiology tape effectively to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and support injured muscles was
transformative, especially when I was able to watch it being applied on both Gab and Star who were going
through physical pain at that time. It underscored the importance of adopting holistic approaches to injury
care that encompass both prevention and rehabilitation.

The class fostered a collaborative and supportive learning environment where we participants shared
insights, experiences, and practices. Through the discussions and the practicial activities, I was not only able
to expand my knowledge base but also developed a deeper appreciation for the complexities of
understanding the body and its injuries. I think it highlights the notion that being careful of a dancers' well-
being is a collective responsibility that extends beyond individual performance.

In conclusion, this class was able to provide me a comprehensive overview of basic first aid techniques using
triangular bandages, Mueller tape, and kinesiology tape. I was able to participate in developing my practical
skills and learning strategies to mitigate injury risks, enhance recovery, and promote overall dancer wellness.
As I reflect on the lessons learned, I am inspired to apply these practices into my dance routine diligently. By
prioritizing injury prevention and adopting a proactive approach to self-care, I am confident that I can
continue to pursue my passion for dance safely and sustainably.
