QUESTION 1

a) For the circuit of Fig. Q1.1, Find the total capacitance., the charge on each plate, and the voltage
across each capacitor.

QUESTION 2

a) A 10µF capacitor in series with a 1MΩ resistor across a 100Vd.c. supply, determine the;
(i) Time constant of the circuit. [2]
(ii) Initial value of the charging current. [2]
(iii) Initial rate of rise of voltage across the capacitor. [2]
(iv) Circuit current at this time. [2]
(v) Voltage across the capacitor 3 sec after switch-on. [2]
(vi) Time taken for the capacitor voltage to reach 50V. [2]

b) An electric motor winding of inductance of 3H and a resistance of 15Ω, is connected to a 120V,


d.c. supply, calculate the:
(i) Steady-state value of current flowing in the winding. [2]
(ii) Time constant of the circuit. [2]
(iii) Value of the induced e.m.f. after 0.1 s. [3]
(iv) Time for the current to rise to 85 percent of its final value. [3]
(v) Value of the current after 0.3 s. [3]

Explain briefly the action of a p-n junction diode:

a) on open-circuit. [5]
b) when provided with a forward bias, and. [5]
c) when provided with a reverse bias. [5]
d) Sketch the characteristic curves for both forward and reverse bias conditions. [10]
