Low Voltage Electrical Hazards

a) 24-January-2024 Date of last LTI 25-November-2023

Low voltage does not necessarily mean ‘low risk’. People may believe that a mistake made while working on a low-voltage
system means only a quick flash and the tripping of a circuit breaker. This is a common misunderstanding.
s

Contact with energized systems at any voltage, which has sufficient current to pass through the heart, has the potential to
cause life threatening injuries. Therefore, the following precautions should always be applied:

General Safety Precautions:

• Barriers - Signage and/or barriers must be posted to
prevent inadvertent access.
• Isolation – Isolate the electrical installation and prove
the circuit is ‘dead’ through testing.
• Testing – ‘Testers’ and ‘multimeters’ must be tested to
verify their operation, and again after use, to confirm
the instrument is still functioning correctly.
• LOTO - Before any equipment inspections or repairs, even on low-voltage circuits, the circuit must be isolated, and
the switch/breaker must be padlocked and tagged in the OFF position.
• Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) - Ensure portable electrical appliances are either grounded (class 1) or double
insulated (class 2).
• Tools - Ensure all tools, equipment and extension cords are in good condition and free from defects.
• Signage - Ensure switchboards and distribution boards are labelled correctly and warning signage is posted.
• Suitability – Ensure all electrical equipment and installations are correctly rated (IP rated) when used in wet/dusty
environments.
• Protection – Ensure the circuit is protected by the correct circuit protection device to limit the flow of unnecessary
s

electrical current.
• Access - Ensure any unused openings in electrical boxes are effectively closed with glands and/or blanks.
• PPE - Ensure the correct personnel protective equipment is worn and is free from defects.
• Competence – Any work on electrical equipment and/or installations must be undertaken by competent persons.
• ERP - Ensure emergency response arrangements are established and periodically tested to ensure a timely response
to all major incidents involving electricity.
