ABSTRACT

Plant leaf diseases have become a significant issue in agriculture, affecting crop yields and quality.
Out of them fungal infections are amongst the most common. And traditional methods of
identifying these diseases are time-consuming and require expertise. Recent advancements in deep
learning offer possibilities for easing plant disease classification. We propose a system that
classifies wheat leaf fungal diseases using convolutional neural network and recommends
treatment methods. The system identifies intricate features in plant leaves afflicted with a disease,
using a previously trained model on a dataset of labeled plant leaves to learn which features
corresponds to different diseases. Our proposed system will be evaluated on a dataset of real-world
plant images, that will ensure its effectiveness in disease classification. The system will also be
optimized for edge devices, making it ideal for on-device image classification in precision
agriculture. The system has potential for early detection and management of plant diseases,
contributing to sustainable agriculture practices. This project presents a robust, scalable approach
for classifying plant leaf diseases with high accuracy using convolutional neural network.
BACKGROUND

Ethiopia is the primary wheat producer in Sub-Saharan Africa owing to the suitable agro-
ecological conditions. According to the 2022/23 world wheat production results list released by
the United States Department of Agriculture in September, Ethiopia’s ranked 18th in the world by
producing 5,700,000 metric tons. But its production and productivity are prone to diverse biotic
and abiotic factors. Among these biotic factors, diseases are the one.

Wheat leaf diseases are a major concern for wheat growers in Ethiopia, as they can significantly
impact crop yield and quality by ingesting on the leaves. To classify and diagnose these diseases,
researchers and experts often use various methods, including visual inspections and laboratory
analysis. However, with the advancement of technology, automated image analysis has become
increasingly useful in this area.

The use of Convolutional Neural Network for the classification of plant leaf diseases can
effectively help in diagnosing and managing these plant diseases. The country experiences a
diverse range of plant diseases, including those caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses, nematodes, and
insects. Early detection and accurate identification of these diseases can help farmers take timely
and appropriate action, such as applying appropriate fungicides or removing the plant before the
infection spreads.

Furthermore, agricultural extension and advisory services in Ethiopia are weak and often struggle
to provide adequate services to farmers across the country. The implementation of an innovative
solution like a CNN-based classification system can help bridge this gap and provide farmers with
an accessible and efficient tool for disease diagnosis.

In summary, with Ethiopia's commitment to leveraging technological solutions to advance the

country's agricultural sector, the implementation of a CNN-based classification system for plant
leaf disease detection, using deep learning algorithms and image recognition applications, can
revolutionize the fight against plant disease outbreaks, increase agricultural productivity and
improve food security.

CONCLUSION

In summary, the proposed system will contribute to the development of an automated system for
classifying wheat leaf fungal diseases. The use of convolutional neural networks will provide an
efficient means to classify and identify wheat leaf diseases, which is critical for ensuring food
security and sustainable agriculture. The system offers a solution to assist farmers and experts in
identifying and managing the most commonly occurring fungal diseases in wheat crops. By
capturing a photograph of the leaf, users without any prior knowledge and expertise can determine
the plant's health status, particularly whether it has been affected by any of the diseases identified
in the system. Based on that determination, the system will recommend the appropriate action to
be taken.

Overall, our system aims to utilize convolutional neural networks as discussed above, to increase
crop productivity and improve food security.
