MELTING OF

THE POLAR
ICE CAPS
THE PROBLEM
WHY ARE THEY
MELTING?
Since 1900 due to Human activities are
Specifically, since the industrial
revolution, carbon dioxide and other
greenhouse gas emissions have raised
temperatures, even higher in the poles,
and as a result, glaciers are rapidly
melting, calving off into the sea and
retreating on land.
Antarctica is losing ice mass
(melting) at an average rate of
about 150 billion tons per
year, and Greenland is losing
about 270 billion tons per year,
adding to sea level rise.

WHAT HAPPENS IF
THE POLAR ICE CAPS
MELT?
If all the ice covering Antarctica , Greenland, and in
mountain glaciers around the world were to melt, sea
level would rise about 70 meters .
By studying how weather
systems move and interact,
meteorologists can predict the
future path and intensity of
storms, the likelihood of rain or
snow, and even long-term
climate trends.
