BRC Student Admission Procedure Guide With University of Mumbai
1. Advertisement
1.1. BVRC will give Ad in website mentioning we are having PhD seats and MA seats
available with us. It mentions the closing date for the application. Application fees
we can have. Advertisements can be online or in paper.
2. Application
2.1. Students will apply in stipulated time by registering themselves and by submitting
required documents.
3. Faculty change exam
3.1. It will be conducted online.
4. Interview
4.1. We will conduct an interview for the students who cleared the faculty change
exam.
4.2. The committee shall comprise of- The Head/Principal/Director as the
chairperson: one or two subject experts from outside, who are PhD holders in the
discipline; one University/ College teacher, not below the rank of Associate
Professor, from the reserved category of the faculty concerned, where
applicable; and the recognized guide/s from the discipline concerned.
4.3. The Research Centres shall submit the reports of the committees to the
University (Thesis Section).
5. Selected people will be given the following letters
5.1. Selection Letter - A letter indicating the candidate is selected
5.2. Interview Report - A letter indicating the report of the interview where the list of
candidates that are selected will be given
5.3. College Recognition letter issued by University
5.4. Guide Recognition letter
6. Student need to submit his topic proposal to the university
6.1. Submission timing in the university - 11AM to 2:30PM
6.1.1. Now in covid 11:30am to 1pm (besides weekends) - Kalina campus
6.2. To be submitted in the Kalina campus thesis section.

6.5. Student needs to follow up with thesis section from time to time regarding their
proposal status
6.5.1. In case of faculty change the topic proposal will be sent to two subject
experts who should approve that the topic chosen is relevant to the field
of philosophy and the candidate can do it.
6.5.2. It will take a lot of time unless students follow them up to give their
opinion.
6.5.3. This should be asked in Kalina Campus.
6.5.4. After the subject experts have given their opinion, the topic proposal will
be put into RRC (Research Recognition Committee) of Mumbai
University. This will happen in Fort campus. Timings and status of RRC
meetings should be asked in Fort campus, RRC section, Room No.: xxx
6.5.5. RRC meetings happen less frequently in Mumbai University.
6.5.6. After the approval of RRC it will be put into the Board of directors meeting
for their approval. Its status also needs to be asked in Fort campus,
Room No: xxx
6.5.7. After that it will go to pro-Vice Chairman for his signature. Its status also
needs to be asked in Fort campus, Room No: xxx
6.5.8. Then it will come to the thesis section in Kalina campus.
6.5.9. Thesis section in Kalina campus will send letters to the student and to the
BVRC asking them to register. Students then need to register themselves
by following the next step.
6.5.10. They will conduct interview of the candidate by the experts if the
candidates are from different backgrounds.
7. Provisional Eligibility
Once the proposal is approved by the university, the university will send letters ot topic approval
to the student and BVRC. Students then need to apply for provisional eligibility to get provisional
eligibility letter.

8. Registration
8.1. Once the proposal is approved by the university, the university will send letters to
the student and BVRC. Students then need to register themselves by using the
following checklist.

10. Course Work
10.1. Ph.D. course work shall be of 12 credits.
10.2. The course work shall be treated as a prerequisite for Ph.D.
10.3. A minimum of four credits shall be assigned to one or more courses on
Research Methodology, which could cover areas such as quantitative
methods, qualitative methods, computer applications, research ethics
and review of published research in the relevant field, training, field
work, etc. Other courses shall be advanced level courses preparing the
student for degree.
10.4. All courses prescribed for Ph.D. course work shall be in conformity
with the credit hour instructional requirement and shall specify
content, and instructional and assessment methods. They shall be duly
approved by the respective Board of Studies.
10.5. The courses shall be arranged in a formal way by the University
through University Departments and also at identified Institutions
where experts in the areas of course work shall deliver requisite
number of lectures. Record of attendance of the student shall be kept.
The attendance of a candidate less than that prescribed by the
University shall make the course null and void for the candidate.
10.6. The Department where the student pursues research shall prescribe
the courses relevant to the student based on the recommendation of
the RAC.
10.7. All the students admitted to the Ph.D. programmes shall be required to
complete the course work prescribed by the Department during the
initial one or two semesters.
10.8. The grades in the course work, including research methodology
courses, shall be finalized after a combined assessment by the RAC
and the Department and the final grades shall be communicated to the
Head of Centre and to the University.
10.9. An M.Phil. /Ph.D. student has to obtain a minimum of 55% of marks or
its equivalent grade in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade /
CGPA in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) in the
course work in order to be eligible to submit the synopsis of
dissertation (Thesis continue in the programme and submit the
dissertation/thesis).
11. Evaluation and Assessment Methods, minimum standards/credits for
award of the degree, etc.:
11.1. Upon satisfactory completion of course work, and obtaining of a
minimum of 55% of marks or its equivalent grade in the UGC 7-point
scale, the M.Phil. scholar shall be required to undertake research work
and produce a draft dissertation/thesis before completion of two years
from the date of registration for M.Phil. and six years for the Ph.D.
student. Women candidates and persons with disability (more than 40
% disability) may be allowed a relaxation of one year for M.Phil. and
two years for Ph.D. in the maximum duration.
12. Colloquium:
12.1. At least three months prior to the submission of the dissertation/thesis, the
student shall make a presentation (Colloquium) before the Research Advisory
Committee, which shall also be open to all faculty members and other research
students. The feedback and comments obtained from them may be suitably
incorporated into the draft dissertation thesis in consultation with the RAC.
13. Synopsis:
13.1. The candidate shall submit to the University fifteen copies of the synopsis of
his/her thesis through his/her Research Supervisor at least two months before
submission of thesis. The format of the thesis shall be as prescribed.
