Practice Worksheet-1 PRINCIPLE OF MOMENT

1. A 40 kg boy sits 1.5 m away from the fulcrum of the sea saw. How far from the
fulcrum must another boy of 32 kg sit in order to balance the sea-saw?

[ Another boy must sit at a distance of 1.88 n from the fulcrum. ]

2. A uniform metre scale weighing l00gf is pivoted at its centre O, two weights
W₁ = 200gf and W₂ = 150 gf hang from the metre scale as shown in the Fig.

Calculate:

a. Anticlock wise moment about print 0.

b. clock wise moment about point O.

c.Resultant moment about point O.

d. Distance from point O where a weight of 200gf should be suspended

to balance the metric scale. [ (a) 5000gf, (b) 6000gf, (c) 1000gf, (d) 10cm]

3. In the adjoining figure, a uniform metre scale is kept at equilibrium position

when supported at 60 cm mark and a mass 'M' is suspended from 90 cm mark.
Will the weight of the scale be greater than or less than or equal to the weight of
mass ‘M’ . Give reason to support your answer

[ in equilibrium,

W of scale at 50 cm mark × (60-50) cm = weight of mass M× (90-60) cm.

Hence , W of scale = 3 × wt.of mass M

Therefore, W of scale is > wt of mass M]

4. Verify the principle of moments if you are given a metre scale, a Fulcrum and
masses of 20g, 50g and 100g
5. A uniform metre scale is balanced at 40 cm mark when weights of 20 gf and 5
of are suspended at 5cm and 75 cm mark respectively. Calculate the weight of
metre scale. [52.5 gf]

6. On a sea-saw, two children of weights 30kg and 40 kg are sitting on one side at
a distances of 3 m and 4m respectively from the fulcrum. Where should a man of
weight 75 kg sit to balance it. [ 3.33m]

7. A uniform metre scale is balanced at 40 cm mark, when weights of 25 gf and

10 gf are suspended at 5 cm mark and 75 cm mark respectively. Calculate weight
of the metre scale. [ 52.5 gf]

8. A uniform metre scale is balanced at 60 cm mark, when weights of 5 gf and 40

gf are suspended at 10 cm mark and 80 cm mark respectively. Calculate the
weight of the metre scale. [55 gf]

9. A uniform metre scale is balanced at 20 cm mark, when a weight of 100 gf is

suspended from one end. Where must the weight be suspended? Calculate the
weight of the metre scale. [wt. should be suspended from zero end] [66.66 gf]

10. A uniform metre scale balances horizontally on a knife edge placed at 55 cm

mark, when a mass of 25 g is supported from one end. Draw the diagram of the
arrangement. Calculate mass of the scale. [ 225 g]

11. A uniform metre scale of weight 50gf is balanced at 60 cm mark, when a

weight of 15 gf is suspended at the 10 cm mark. Where must a weight 100 gf be
suspended to balance the metre scale? [ 72.5cm]

12. A uniform metre scale of weight 50 gf is balanced at the 40 cm mark, when a

weight of 100 gf is suspended at the 5 cm mark. Where must a weight of 80 gf be
suspended to balance the metre scale? [ 77.5 cm]

13. A see-saw 8 m long is balanced in the middle. Two children of mass 30 kgf
and 40 kgf are sitting on the same side of the fulcrum at a distance of 1.5 m and 3.5 m from
the fulcrum respecitvely. Where must a lady weighing 60 kgf sit from the fulcrum, so as to
balance the see-saw? [3.08 m from fulcrum on opposite side]

14.. A uniform wooden beam AB, 80 cm long and weighing 250 gf, is supported
on a wedge as shown in the figure 1.28. Calculate the greatest weight which can
be placed on end A without causing the beam to tilt. [750 gf]

15. A meter scale is provided at 10 cm mark and

is balanced by suspending 400 g from 0 cm mark
