In the expansion of (2 + 𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘)8 the coefficient of the 𝑥𝑥 2 term is 1008.

Find the values of 𝑘𝑘. [3]

Question 2

Solve 3 tan2 𝜃𝜃 = 1 (−𝜋𝜋 < 𝜃𝜃 < 𝜋𝜋)

Give your answers as exact multiples of 𝜋𝜋. [4]

Question 3

A student plays two games in which she either wins or loses.

The tree diagram shows the probabilities of winning each game in terms of 𝑝𝑝.

Point A lies at (−10, 1) and point B lies at (6, 13).

a) Find the equation of the line which passes through points A and B.

Give your answer in the form 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 + 𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏 + 𝑐𝑐 = 0 where 𝑎𝑎, 𝑏𝑏 and 𝑐𝑐 are integers. [3]

b) Find the equation of the circle which has the line AB as a diameter. [3]

Question 5

An arithmetic series has first term 𝑎𝑎 and common difference 𝑑𝑑.

The 7th term is 8 times larger than the 3rd term. The 6th term is 25.

a) Write down two equations in 𝑎𝑎 and 𝑑𝑑 and solve them. Show ALL working. [6]

b) Find the sum to infinity where this is possible.

a) Write 𝑥𝑥 2 − 10𝑥𝑥 + 30 in the form (𝑥𝑥 − 𝑎𝑎)2 + 𝑏𝑏 where 𝑎𝑎 and 𝑏𝑏 are integers. [2]

b) 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) is defined as 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 4𝑥𝑥 3 − 8𝑥𝑥 2 − 25𝑥𝑥 + 50.

i) Use the Factor Theorem to show that (𝑥𝑥 − 2) is a factor of 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥). [2]

ii) Divide 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) by (𝑥𝑥 − 2) and hence factorise 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) completely. [2]

c) The quadratic equation 4𝑥𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏 + 9 = 0 has no real roots.

Find the range of values of 𝑏𝑏. [3]
