The opening chorale should be a nice blend of woodwinds and brass, played with freedom of expression. At bar 9, the snare drum(s) “sneak in” with a cadence that increase in sound to the mf marking at bar 17. At this point the piccolo and flutes introduce the fifer’s theme (you may opt to have them stand), At bar 74 the fifer's melody is finally played fortissimo (melody) and forte (accompaniment) with the last two notes of the theme being, played by the chimes solo. Bar 85 reprises the chorale. (The trumpet figure in bar 87, the trombone figure in bar 92 and the flute figure in bars 95-96 are a kind of “mysterious, subliminal” effect.) The accompaniment in bar 97 should be played as smooth and legato as possible ~ just a velvet underpinning for the melody (cantabile), which should be very prominent.
