MEC 4702 PART B CONTROL SYSTEMS
EXPERIMENT No. 1 DUE 8th June 2023
TITLE: TIME RESPONSE OF A 2ND ORDER SYSTEM & OBTAIN SPECIFICATION
PARAMETERS
OBJECTIVE: To determine
I. To study the Time Response of a 2nd order system to determine the parameters from
unit step input

THEORY: Time response has utmost importance for the design and analysis of control systems
because these are inherently time domain systems where time is independent variable. During the
analysis of response, the variation of output with respect to time can be studied and it is known
as time response. To obtain satisfactory performance analysis of the system with respect to time,
the response must be within specified limits. From time response analysis and corresponding
results, the stability and accuracy of the system can be evaluated. The response has two parts:
Transient response and Steady-state response.
Transient response: The part of the time response which goes to zero after large interval of
time. Steady state response: the part of the response that remains even after the transients have
died out. The total response of a system is the sum of the transient response and steady state
response.
Modeling: the transfer function of a 2nd order system is generally represented by the following
transfer function:
2
Y ( s) ωn
= 2
R ( s) s +2 ζ ω n+ ω2n
Performance parameters:
ASSIGNMENT
Obtain the step response for the following transfer function. Also verify your result theoretically.
19
G ( s )=
( s +4 ) ( s +8 )
DISCUSSION:
1. Estimate the 2% settling time from the simulation and compare with the theoretical value
4
from T s=
(ζ ωn )
The 2% settling time is approximately 0.72 seconds which is close to the theoretical
value.
2. Determine and discuss on the various performance parameters of this system
3. For under damped systems, write the damping ratio as a function of the peak overshoot
