AC-AC CONVERTER

Q). 230V, 50Hz, 1000 rpm fan motor is applied from a 230 √ 2sin (314 t)
through a single triac. If firing angle α is 60°. Compute fan speed.
Ans: -
Given- Vm = 230√ 2V , α = 60°, f = 50 Hz, N= 1000 rpm;
For a fan motor, τ ∝ v 2
but, τ ∝ N 2
∴ v2∝ N 2

For α=60°,

( Vo ) rms=Vm
√ 1

{ ( π −α )+
sin 2 α
2
}

= 230 √ 2

{ π− +
2π (
π sin 120 °
}
3 ) 2

= 230 √ 2 1 { 2 π + √ 3 }
2π 3 4

= 230 √ 2

∗2.5263

= 230 √ 2 √ 0.402284
= 230 √ 2∗0.604258
= 206.3047 V
At 0° firing angle ( Vo ) rms = 230V and fan speed is 1000 rpm.
Now,
Vorms 1 N 1
=
Vorms 2 N 2
230 1000
=
206.3047 N 2
∴N2 = 896.9769 rpm.
Therefore, the fan speed is 896.98 rpm.
