NINETEENTH DEGREE
GRAND PONTIFF

THE CHAPTER AND ITS DECORATIONS

he hangings are blue, sprinkled with stars of gold. In the east is a throne, and over it a
T blue canopy. Around the room are twelve columns, two in the east, (one on each side
of the Venerable Pontiff), two in the west, (one on each side of the Warden), four on the
north side and four on the south side of the Chapter. On their capitals are the English
initials of the names of the Twelve Tribes, in the following order beginning with the
column on the right hand of the Venerable Pontiff, and going round by the north, west, and
south: Ephraim, Benjamin, Issachar, Judah, Napthali, Asher, Dan, Manasseh, Zebulon,
Ruben, Simeon, and Gad.
Under these, in the same order, are the zodiacal signs: (Taurus), (Gemini),
(Cancer), (Leo), (Virgo), (Libra), (Scorpio), (Sagittarius), (Capricorn),
(Aquarius), (Pisces), and (Aires); and under these, again, in the same order, the
following names and titles of the Deity:

ALOHIM, YEHU, GAMEL, MALEK, YEHUAH, ADONAI, AISH-GEBER, AL, ADAR,

ALOH, AYEN, and ALI-KHI.

TRACING–BOARD

The Tracing Board has a mountain in the foreground. A city, foursquare, appears
descending from the sky (in which are neither sun, moon, stars nor clouds, but only the
azure vault on which the light from the city is reflected). Below is a representation of
Jerusalem, overturned and in ruins. Around the descending city is a wall of jasper, the
foundation of which is laid with the precious stones of twelve different kinds and colors
that appear on the Pontiff’s breastplate. All the buildings are of gold. The architecture of
the city is oriental, and there is no temple. There are twelve gates of pearl, three on each
side. A great glory in the center gives it light.
On the six gates that show in the painting are the first three and the last three initials of
the names of the Tribes, and the first and last three names of Deity given above.
A sparkling river runs through the city; and upon it, in the center of the city, stands a
tree, laden with fruits, leaves and blossoms. Its roots are on each side of the stream.
Beneath the ruins of the overturned city lies a writhing serpent with three heads, bound
with brazen chains.

OFFICERS AND DRESS

The Master is styled ‘Venerable Pontiff’. He wears a white satin robe, and holds a
scepter in his hand. On his breast is the Jewish High Priest’s breastplate.
There is but one Warden, who sits in the west, holding a gilded rod. He is styled
‘Venerable’. Each of the other Brethren is styled ‘Brother’.
All the members, except the Venerable Pontiff, wear robes of white linen; and a fillet
of light blue satin round the forehead, with twelve stars embroidered on it, in gold.
The cordon is crimson, bordered with white, and worn from left to right. On it are twelve
stars embroidered in gold, and the letters Alpha and Omega, where it crosses the breast.
The Jewel is an oblong square of gold-colored metal, with the Hebrew letter a (Aleph),
engraved on one side and u (Tau) on the other.
The Battery is 3 x 3.

THE COUNCIL OF KADOSH

(To be read to the Class)

The Council of the Kadosh comprises the Nineteenth through the Thirtieth Degrees.
The word Kadosh is Hebrew, and means “consecrated or dedicated.” It members are
dedicated to the discovery of philosophic truths and the chivalric virtues. This series of
degrees present various concepts of Deity and man’s search to discover Him. Remember
that these lessons are provided for instruction, not as doctrine. The manner in which you
worship the Creator is a private concern, and Freemasonry will not interfere with it. Our
symbols are to be interpreted within the confine of your own beliefs, without intrusion.
The Degrees in this series also teach of certain Orders of Knighthood and the lessons we
should draw from their history and deeds.

SYNOPSIS OF THE NINETEENTH DEGREE

GRAND PONTIFF

“The true Mason labors for the benefit of those who are to come after him.”

(To be read to the Class)

The Council degrees exemplify various philosophical and religious traditions, as well
as Orders of Knighthood, as embodying principles and ideas promulgated by our Rite.
Their precepts, teachings and ideas illustrate what must be encountered, understood and
employed on the path to greater Truth and Knowledge.

This Degree particularly shows how the great moral principles inculcated in the
preceding degrees lead up to their application in various schools of religious,
philosophical and civil thought.

Once enlightenment and proper conduct free a man from the bondage of servile and base
behavior, the structures of the old and faulty systems of belief are shattered and destroyed,
symbolized by the Angels pouring their vials. For when evil, symbolized by darkness, destroys
itself, naught is left but the Light. Truth alone endures, because it is real; all else is illusion.

The Degrees no longer speak of building the Temple, but of building the New City,
referring to the day when all Mankind live together according to the principles extolled by
Masonry. You will be made a Priest of the Order of Melchizedek, meaning that you should
assume these priestly qualities: virtue, sincerity, equitability, truth, justice and tolerance.
Be true and faithful to God, to duty, and to yourself. This entitles you to be called a Pontiff,
or bridge builder, able to make your way in the labyrinth of life.

Now Brethren, hear what you shall hear, and attend the Nineteenth Degree, Grand Pontiff.

1 RECEPTION
2
3 [The Candidate is clothed in the dress, jewel and ornaments of a Knight Rose
4 Croix, received by the Master of Ceremonies, and conducted to the door of the
5 Chapter or offstage where they cannot be seen. There the Master of Ceremonies
6 raps six times and then once. The Master of Ceremonies enters with the
7 Candidate and they stand just at the entrance of the Chapter or just onstage
8 where they can be seen.]
9
10 VENERABLE PONTIFF—Who hails?
11
12 MASTER OF CEREMONIES—A Knight Rose Croix, who desires to attain the
13 Degree of Pontiff.
14
15 VENERABLE PONTIFF—Since his desires are so commendable, Brother Master of
16 Ceremonies, conduct the Candidate around the columns and explain their meaning
17 to him.
18
19 [The door is opened and the Candidate enters (or enters from offstage),
20 conducted by the Master of Ceremonies. He is led to each of the twelve columns
21 in the order shown below. His attention is directed to the initials upon its capital
22 and base saying at each as follows:]
23
24 At the 4th Column: . . . JUDAH shall return again to his first estate, when the empire
25 of evil ends. light and not darkness is eternal, truth and not error is immortal.
26
27 At the 3d Column: . . . ISSACHAR shall once more be free when sin and suffering
28 are no longer known. Far in the future to us, that day of light is now to God. Time is
29 a succession of points, each in the center of eternity. Evil lasts only during time. The
30 reign of God is measured by eternity.
31
32 At the 9th Column: . . . ZEBULON shall find peace, as ships that come out of great
33 storms, furl their sails, and let drop their anchors in quiet harbors. Peace shall be the
34 universal law for all the children of a common Father.
35
36 At the 10th Column: . . . REUBEN, like all mankind, has wandered far into the
37 darkness. The steps of the ages ring in their stately march, down the long slopes of
38 time; and ever the dawn draws closer. Men are God’s instruments to accelerate its
39 coming. Work then, my Brother! Be patient, wait!

19° – 10

1 At the 11th Column: . . . SIMEON shall be reconciled to God; when intolerance no

2 longer persecutes, and bigotry no longer hates. The waves of eternity roll ever nearer
3 to us, on the narrow sands of life that crumble under our weary feet. Those on whose
4 ears the roar of those waves surges should have in their hearts a prayer to God, and
5 not hatred for their brother.
6
7 At the 12th Column: . . . GAD shall triumph at last; though a troop of evils long
8 overcome him, as they do us all. The serpent is still unchained. The giants still assail
9 the battlements of heaven, recoiling not before its lightning. Typhon and Ahriman
10 march elated as conquerors. But with them march the ages, majestic in their silence,
11 and calm as fate. Centuries are the moments of truth’s twilight.
12
13 At the 1st Column: . . . EPHRAIM has strayed from home. He shall return, in tears
14 and penitent, and find eternal rest. From God all souls have emanated, and to him all
15 return. The wanderings of none can be eternal, for then would evil be immortal and
16 a god. Pain and sorrow, misery and crime would have seized upon and hold a portion
17 of God’s sovereignty.
18
19 At the 8th Column: . . . MANASSEH shall be restored to sight. We are all blind
20 swimmers in the currents of a mighty sea that has no shore. We see, as in a dream,
21 the effects and not the causes. The simplest things are miracles to us. We do not see
22 the flower that is within the seed, nor the oak enveloped in the acorn, nor the smells
23 and colors in the invisible air, limpid water, and rank earth from which the seed
24 extracts them by its mysterious chemistry. When the divine light comes, we shall see
25 and know.
26
27 At the 2d Column: . . . BENJAMIN shall be redeemed and come back from exile and
28 captivity. They, like pain, poverty, and sorrow, are blessings. Without them there
29 would be no excellence in human nature: neither fortitude nor self-denial, nor
30 industry or patience, nor charity nor tolerance, magnanimity nor generosity, heroism
31 nor gratitude. Our exile from the presence of the Deity, our captivity by sin and
32 sorrow, are the means, offered us by God, to purify the heart and ennoble the soul.
33
34 At the 7th Column: . . . DAN shall obey the new law—the law of love. He prays best
35 that loves best all things, both great and small; the great God that loves us, made and
36 loves all. This is the tone of one great harmony. Sin, pain, and sorrow mingle as its
37 discords. These but add grandeur to the anthem. They lead to the grand, final, perfect
38 chord that will resound through all the ages forever.
39
40 At the 6th Column: . . . ASHER shall pluck the fruit of the Tree of Life that towers
41 above the golden spires and overlooks the jasper walls of the New Jerusalem. For all
42 men shall learn to know the true God, the infinite. He is kind and indulgent to human
43 feebleness and frailty, loving and forgiving; a benefactor, a friend, a father.

19° – 12

1 At the 5th Column: . . . NAPHTALI believes, hopes, waits, and is patient; believing
2 all death is new life; all destruction and dissolution, recombination and reproduction.
3 All evil and affliction is but the mode of this great genesis that shall not be eternal.
4 Hope for the time when this incessant flux and change shall cease and the new law
5 of love rules over all existence. Wait with patience the fulfillment of the inviolable
6 promises of God.
7
8 [At this moment a thick cloth is flung over the Candidate’s head; and he is
9 immediately seized by several Brethren, and placed in the center of the Chapter
10 or onstage. Leaving the cloth so that he can remove it at pleasure, they place him
11 sitting on the floor and retire. Sudden and momentary flashes of light will be
12 produced at the appropriate time as indicated below, succeeded by intense
13 darkness. The Candidate is left for awhile in entire solitude and perfect silence.
14 Then a Brother says, in his hearing:]
15
16 FIRST BROTHER—All who will not worship the Beast with seven heads and ten
17 horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and the mysterious name upon his forehead,
18 shall be slain. All men, the high and the low, the rich and the poor, freemen and
19 slaves, shall receive upon their right hand, or on their forehead, his mark, his name,
20 and the number of his name. That number is six hundred sixty-six. Without it they
21 shall neither buy nor sell; for his is power, dominion, and the authority of the great
22 dragon. Man, helpless and in darkness. Will you receive his mark that you may
23 emerge to light? [This question is rhetorical and the Second Brother should
24 immediately speak.]
25
26 SECOND BROTHER—Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of his
27 judgment is come! Worship Him that made heaven and earth, and the sea, and the
28 springs of waters, for He alone has the true sign. If any man worships the Beast and
29 his image and receives his mark, he shall drink the wine of God’s indignation and be
30 banished from the presence of the holy angels and of the Word that is the Redeemer.
31 Remorse shall torture those who worship the Beast and receive the mark of his name,
32 and they shall have no rest.
33
34 THIRD BROTHER—Have patience, you who, though in darkness, are still our
35 Brother! Keep the commandments of God, and your faith in His justice and infinite
36 goodness! Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord. They rest from their labors and
37 their influence lives after them.
38
39 [There is silence again for a little while, then the Brethren continue:]
40
41 FIRST BROTHER—The first angel has poured his vial on the earth; a foul plague
42 has fallen on all who wear the mark of the beast and have worshipped his image.

1 [Light flashes.]
2
3 SECOND BROTHER—The second angel has poured his vial upon the sea; it has
4 become like the blood of a dead man and everything therein has died.
5
6 [Flash.]
7
8 THIRD BROTHER—The third angel has poured his vial upon the rivers, the brooks,
9 and the living springs; they have become blood.
10
11 [Flash.]
12
13 FIRST BROTHER—The fourth angel has poured his vial upon the sun; the wicked
14 are scorched with great heat, and yet will not repent.
15
16 [Flash.]
17
18 SECOND BROTHER—The fifth angel has poured his vial upon those who worship
19 the Beast. His kingdom is in darkness; his followers howl from pain and terror. They
20 blaspheme and still do not repent.
21
22 [Flash.]
23
24 THIRD BROTHER—The sixth angel has poured his vial upon the great rivers of the
25 Orient, and they are dried up. The spirits of falsehood, fraud, and evil marshal their
26 armies for the great battle to be fought on the great day of the almighty God.
27 Unexpectedly, before men see its dawn, that day will come. Be prepared by wearing
28 the armor of charity, hope, and faith; lest it come suddenly and find you naked and
29 defenseless!
30
31 [Flash.]
32
33 FIRST BROTHER—The seventh angel has poured his vial into the air. IT IS DONE!
34
35 [Upon this, thunder is heard without, and frequent flashes light the Chapter or
36 stage. Then there are loud noises, cries, and a crash representing a city
37 destroyed by an earthquake.]
38
39 FIRST BROTHER—The cities of the nations have fallen. Intolerance, that great
40 Babylon, is no more. The chains imposed by fraud upon the human mind, the
41 manacles and fetters fastened by force upon free thought, have fallen. Power, fraud,
42 and falsehood thought impregnable, have also fallen; and shall no longer drink the
43 blood of the saints and martyrs of the truth.
44

19° – 16

1 SECOND BROTHER—Salvation, glory, honor, and power to the eternal God and
2 infinite Father! Let all mankind rejoice. The Lord God omnipotent reigns. Sin and
3 evil are dethroned! Blessed are they that obey His law, and trust in His goodness, that
4 they may have the right to pluck the fruit of the Tree of Life, and may enter in
5 through the gates into the city! Brother, though in darkness, will you obey that law,
6 and trust in that infinite goodness, and be patient, though the appointed time may
7 seem to draw no nearer during your life, nor your labors and exertions to produce
8 any fruit?
9
10 CANDIDATE—I will.
11
12 SECOND BROTHER—Will you be neither weary nor discouraged; satisfied to sow
13 the seed, which those who come after you may reap, if God so wills it?
14
15 CANDIDATE—I will.
16
17 FIRST BROTHER—Come, then, with us to the abode of light!
18
19 [Several Brethren raise the Candidate to a standing position and the veil is
20 removed. The tracing board is displayed and the Officers read as follows:]
21
22 ORATOR—I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first
23 earth were passed away and there was no more sea. I saw the Holy City, the New
24 Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven. Henceforth He will dwell with
25 men, and be their Father, and they His obedient, loving children. He will wipe the
26 tears from all eyes: and there shall be no more death, nor fraud, nor falsehood. There
27 shall be no more sin and shame, nor remorse nor affliction, nor sickness and death
28 any more: for the ancient wrong and evil have passed away forever.
29
30 VENERABLE BROTHER WARDEN—The Almighty sits upon the throne and says:
31 I make all things new. For these words are true. To him that thirsts I give freely the
32 waters of the spring of life. He that overcomes shall inherit all things. I will be his
33 Father, and will love my child.

1 VENERABLE PONTIFF—In the heavenly city there shall be no temple since the
2 Lord God Almighty and the Redeemer are its Temple. Neither sun nor moon shall be
3 needed there for the primitive light shall give it brilliance. In that light all nations
4 shall walk; there all the splendors of the universe shall have their spring. Therein
5 shall be no night, nor wickedness nor falsehood. The light, everlasting life, and truth
6 of God shall reign there forever. He is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end,
7 the First and the Last, from whom all things come, and to whom all return.
8 Melchizadek, King of Salem, whose name signifies the just king, was the priest
9 of the Most High God. He met Abraham returning from the slaying of the kings and
10 blessed him, and Abraham gave to him a tenth of the spoils. [He anoints the
11 Candidate with a little oil, on the crown of the head, and says:] Be a priest forever,
12 after the order of Melchizadek, virtuous, sincere, equitable, true, minister of justice,
13 and priest of toleration! Be faithful to God, your duty, and yourself and thus deserve
14 the title of Pontiff, apostle of truth, which you are henceforward entitled to wear.
15 Rise now my Brother.
16
17 [The Venerable Pontiff then invests him with the insignia of the Degree, saying
18 as he does so:]
19
20 VENERABLE PONTIFF—The robe of white linen, with which I now invest you, is
21 emblematical of that equity and purity which should characterize one who is
22 consecrated to the service of truth. It reminds us also of the robes of the one hundred
23 and forty-four thousand who refused to wear the mark of the Beast upon their
24 foreheads.
25 This cordon of crimson, bordered with white, teaches you that the zeal and ardor
26 of a Grand Pontiff ought to be set off by the greatest purity of morals and perfect
27 charity and beneficence. The twelve stars upon it and upon the fillet allude to the
28 twelve gates of the New City, the twelve signs of the Zodiac, the twelve fruits of the
29 Tree of Life, the twelve Tribes of Israel, and the twelve Apostles.
30 This fillet is the peculiar emblem of your pontificate. As the slightest contact with
31 the earth will soil its spotless purity, remember also that the least indiscretion will
32 soil the exalted character you have now voluntarily assumed.
33 Receive this jewel and let the letters upon it and the cordon, the first and last of
34 the Greek and Hebrew alphabets, ever remind you of the love and veneration which
35 you owe to that Great Being, the source of all existence. He is the Alpha and Omega,
36 the First and the Last. On His promises we rely with perfect confidence, in whose
37 mercy and goodness we implicitly trust, and for the fulfillment of whose wise
38 purposes we are content to wait.
39
40 [The Venerable Brother Warden now directs the Candidate’s attention back to
41 the Tracing Board; and the Venerable Pontiff continues:]

1 VENERABLE PONTIFF—My Brother, after the ceremonies of this Degree, this

2 painting needs but little explanation, and most of that may be found in the closing
3 chapters of the Apocalypse or Book of Revelation at the end of the New Testament
4 in the Holy Bible.
5 To us as Masons, the city overturned represents the empire of evil, finally
6 overwhelmed, and the last great conflict between the principles of light and darkness,
7 which event mankind has in all ages expected, and the holy books of every ancient
8 nation have foretold. The city descending from heaven is the new empire of light and
9 truth for which we wait and hope. The Tree of Life is emblematical of truth, the basis
10 of all the virtues represented by its fruits. The buildings of gold, and walls of
11 precious stones, and gates of pearl, are symbols of the glory that shall invest and
12 make magnificent the universe. Then sickness, sin, pain, sorrow, guilt, and evil shall
13 disappear forever and leave the world again a paradise, the splendid temple of mercy
14 and beneficence. The river, to the dwellers in eastern deserts, was the symbol of
15 purity, of generosity, of plenty. The tree, with its leaves and flowers and fruits,
16 represents nature. She bestows her bounties and her many blessings without waiting
17 for men’s thanks. The twelve tribes, whose initials adorn the columns, and are seen
18 on the pearl gates of the City, are emblematical of the human race. The twelve
19 Apostles are to us the type of all those who have labored to reform, instruct, and
20 elevate mankind.
21 The Signs of the Zodiac upon the columns, accompany the initials of those Tribes,
22 respectively, to which they were assigned among the Hebrews: the Lion to Judah,
23 Cancer (once the Asses) to Issachar, Capricorn to Zebulon, Aquarius to Reuben,
24 Pisces to Simeon, Aries to Gad, Taurus to Ephraim, Sagittarius to Manasseh, Gemini
25 to Benjamin, Scorpio (once the Eagle) to Dan, Libra to Asher, and Virgo to Napthali.
26
27 The serpent writhing in chains has to us a peculiar signification. It was promised
28 that the offspring of the woman should bruise the serpent’s head.
29
30 SO SHALL THE FOOT OF TRUTH CRUSH ERROR!
31
32 SO HONESTY AND HONOR TRAMPLE ON FALSEHOOD!
33
34 SO CHARITY TREADS IN THE DUST INTOLERANCE!

1 VENERABLE BROTHER WARDEN—The Hebrew characters upon the twelve

2 columns are the twelve great names and titles of Deity, upon the breastplate of the
3 High Priest. Beginning with the column of Judah, and in the order given above. They
4 are: MALEK, king or sovereign; GAMEL, dispenser of rewards and punishments;
5 ADAR, fire or splendor; ALOH, the adored; AYEN, the eye, or all-seeing; AL-KHI,
6 the living God, ALOHIM, the creative deities, or the personified potencies of
7 Yahweh; AL, the ancient Semitic nature-god, the elevated; YEHU, life; AISH-
8 GEBAH, majesty of fire; ADONI, lord; YAHWEH, the self-existent.
9 This, my Brother, concludes the ritual of this Degree. Be seated now among your
10 Brethren for through you they have also attained the title of Pontiff [The Venerable
11 Pontiff returns to the east.]

20
21 VENERABLE BROTHER WARDEN—To work, to wait, and to be patient.

23 VENERABLE PONTIFF—For what do we wait, Brother Warden?
24
25 VENERABLE BROTHER WARDEN—For the Light of Noonday.
26
27 VENERABLE PONTIFF—Let us then close this Lodge, and be patient! Brother
28 Warden, inform the faithful and true Brethren, that I am about to close this Chapter
29 so each may go forth into the world and do his duty as a soldier and priest of light,
30 truth, and toleration.
31
32 VENERABLE BROTHER WARDEN—Brethren, the Venerable Pontiff is about to
33 close this Chapter that we may all go forth into the world and labor to ennoble
34 humanity, as true soldiers and priests of light, truth, and toleration.
35
36 [The Venerable Pontiff and Venerable Brother Warden each rap six times and
37 then once as in opening. Then all the Brethren clap 3x3 with their hands.]
