THE WONDERFUL HUMMINGBIRD

SCIENTIFIC NAME: LODDIGESIA MIRABILIS

It is one of the most beautiful birds in the wordl. It is
currently in danger of extinction due to forest predation
and hunting. This species is valued due to its tail feathers
and also because of the belief that its heart is an
aphrodisiac.
DIFERENCE BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE
Adult males share main colors very similar to the young
ones, although in this case the tail and chest are almost
completely white. Females, for the most part, tend to
wear duller tones, such as gray, green and even bleck,
and both the tail and the chest predominate. The green.

HUMMINGBIRD HABITAT
This bird is endemic to the Utcubamba river basin, in the
high jungle of northern peru. It was first described in
1853 by bird collector ANDREW MATTHEWS for George
loddiges.
FEEDING
Although hummingbirds feed mainly on the nectar of
flowers, they complent their diet with small insects and
spiders that they catch when they visit te flower
REPRODUCTION
The female lays two eggs over a two day period and
hatches them for 14 to 19 days. While incubating they are
aggressively territorial and prevent other birds, even of
the same species, form snooping around the nest.
Hummingbirds then feed their young for about three to
four weeks.
LIFECICLE
Females feed their babies for 3 to 4 weeks unfortunately,
some usually die within the few days during the
incubation period. The life span of hummingbirds is 4
years, but specimens have recorded that have reached
twelve years of life.
STOP THE EXTINCTION OF THE
HUMMINBIRD
The important thing is to have flowers that provide nectar
all year round. The idea is to provide the hummingbird
with a place to feed, rest and make its nest. Perennial
plants that are green all year round, perches or branches
so they can rest, as well as outlets are recommended of
water.
