Complete Excretion
Complete Excretion
This can reduce the activity of enzymes in the body which are essential for
controlling the rate of metabolic reactions
For this reason, too much carbon dioxide in the body is toxic
Urea is also toxic to the body in higher concentrations and so must be excreted
Urea
a waste product that is produced in the liver in humans
Osmotic effect
The danger
of waste
products
Using up necessary storage
The Urinary System
Note the difference between the
‘ureter’ and the ‘urethra’.
Pay
attention These two names are commonly
confused by students so take care
to learn them and know which
tube is which – they are NOT
interchangeable!
HOW UREA IS PRODUCED
Textbook [page 263]
It would be very wasteful to excrete the extra amino acids because they
contain energy.
The part containing energy is kept (which is the carboxylic group) and turned
into carbohydrate and stored.
There are various reasons why the concentration of urine will change,
including
Water intake
Temperature
Exercise
Define Define the term excretion in your own words.
QUESTIONS
Explain Explain why urea and carbon dioxide must be excreted from the body.
Name Name 3 factors that can affect the colour and volume of urine.
Describe the colour and volume of urine you would expect a person to
Describe produce (a) a little after drinking a large bottle of cola, (b) after half-
an-hour of vigorous exercise. Explain your answer.
EXCRETION BY
THE KIDNEYS
The formation and excretion of urine by the kidneys involves two
separate processes:
Filtration
Selective Reabsorption
Ultrafiltration Filtration
Small molecules, such as water, glucose, ions and
urea are filtered out of the blood into the nephron
Water
Urea
The filtrate
(substances Glucose
that pass
through the
filter) Ions/salt
Arterioles branch off the renal
artery and lead to each
nephron
the patient has much more freedom as they are not tied to having dialysis
several times a week in one place
their diets can be much less restrictive than they are when on dialysis
