Your ID, Please!

Everything about us changes. We grow taller. Our voices become different. But one thing
never changes. Our fingerprints!

Turn your hand over. Look at the tips of your fingers. There are many lines on them. These
lines make special patterns. They are your fingerprints. Everyone has different fingerprints. Even
twins have different fingerprints.

Fingerprints tell who you are. In the past, people used their fingerprints to sign papers.

Today, some homes have a special door system. You press your finger on a small screen.
Then, the screen reads your fingerprint. It recognizes who you are. Finally, the system unlocks
the door.

Soon, nobody will carry any keys or cards. You will be recognized just by fingerprints.

READING PASSAGE III

Dog Attack
There are many nice, cute dogs. They are usually good friends with people. But there are
some scary dogs, too. These dogs may attack you!

If you meet an angry dog, do not stamp your foot. Do not speak to the dog. Instead, turn
sideways and stand still. If you have to move do it slowly. If the dog tries to bite you give it
something to chew on. An umbrella works great. Your books, a coat, or a bag are good, too.

If the dog tries to attack you, stand behind or climb on something. Climb a tree or get on top
of a car, or you can just get down on the ground. Pull your knees into your chest. Then, tuck your
head in between them. Grip the back of your neck with your hands. This will help protect your
body from the dog.

A dog attack is scary. But remember these tips, and you will be safe. Never pat a strange dog.
Never run away from one. And never stare into a dog’s eyes. The dog might think you want to
fight.

READING PASSAGE IV

The Age of Exploration

In the fifteen century, many European countries, such as Portugal, Spain, France, and
England, traded for goods from Asia. Gold, silk, and spices from India and China were in great
demand in Europe. Europeans were willing to pay high prices for Asia’s goods. However, it took
a very long time for merchants to travel to Asia by land. So, the Europeans began to search for
another route to Asia.

The Europeans completed to find sea routes to Asia. Portugal led the way. The Portuguese
developed a new ship called caravel, which could sail farther and faster than other ships. In 1418,
Prince Henry the Navigator, a Portuguese prince, began sending expeditions to explore the
western coast of Africa. Slowly, but steadily, the Portuguese sailed farther and farther south.
Finally, in 1487, the Portuguese captain Bartolomeu Dias became the first European to round the
southern tip of Africa, the Cape of Good Hope. But he did not enter the Indian Ocean. Around
ten years later, Vasco da Gama sailed all the way from Portugal to India. The Europeans had
discovered a waterway to Asia.

The Portuguese sailed to Asia by going around Africa. But Christopher Columbus, an Italian,
believed he could reach Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean. He convinced Ferdinand
and Isabella, the king and queen of Spain, to sponsor a three-ship mission. With his ships the
Pinta, Nina, and Santa Maria, he set sail in 1492. After several weeks, his crew sighted land. It
was not India though; it was the New World. Columbus had discovered North and South
America.

In 1519, an expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan set sail from Spain. Magellan was killed in
the Philippines, but his crew achieved the first circumnavigation of the world in 1522. Soon
afterward, the French, Dutch, and English entered the race of global exploration, too. The
Europeans’ sea explorations reach Asia during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries changed the
world forever. We call this time “the Age of Exploration” or “the Age of Discovery”.
