MECH433 Assessment - Part 2 2023-24

Submission Deadline : 13th of May 2024 at 23:59

What you need to do

You are being asked to outline a practical energy mix for the following situation:
• A location centred on Liverpool, for a population of 5 million.
• The energy mix is up to you to decide, but it must be net zero carbon emitting, and
located within a 100 mile radius of Liverpool.
• The energy requirements will be determined by you using the table on the next page to
determine energy total energy demand
• For the assessment there are no restrictions on land usage, ie no protected spaces

What to include
In your scenario you will need to include the following information:
• What your assumptions are outside of the energy requirements outlined above, eg what
you are, or not including, in your calculations.
• What your key criteria are in de ning the energy mix, ie why you have chosen what you
have chosen.
• How you would manage demand, and account for sudden extra energy requirement,
consider excess capacity
• Technologies proposed need to be either in operation now or about to be used. This
includes CCS, if you wish to use CCS then it must be in operation now at an industrial
scale, include the location and operator in your submission
In this case study you need to design your own energy system, and not use the current
energy mix as your mix.
Develop a new one based on the module - do not repeat what is being used

Assumptions
Key assumptions you can make are:
• There are no space issues, and there are no space requirements for food
• The amount of energy for heat/cooking can be provided from electricity
• The technologies you can use are open, but must be in use or about to be
implemented…this includes CCS
• There is no cost limit for your energy mix - just ensure you cost your energy on the
strike price cost
• The cost for the energy can be based on those outlined in the lectures
• Your demand cycle can be based on those presented in the module

family of four.
