OBJECTIVES
WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT.
THEY WILL GAIN A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE FACTORS INFLUENCING EQUIPMENT SELECTION
FOR SPECIFIC CONSTRUCTION TASKS.
CONSTRUCTION
EQUIPMENT
also sometimes called heavy machinery, refers to
a wide range of specialized vehicles and
machines used for various tasks in the
construction industry. These machines are
essential for performing tasks that would be too
difficult, dangerous, or time-consuming to do by
hand.

TYPES OF CONTRUCTION EQUIPMENT
1. PPE (PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT)
refers to any equipment worn to minimize exposure to
hazards that can cause injury or illness. It's essentially a
barrier between you and potential dangers in your work
environment.
CRANE
are used to lift or lower objects and move them
horizontally. Either way, all cranes are equipped with
pulleys and cables that are useful when it comes to moving
objects around.
They are usually temporary structures that are either
mounted on a custom-built vehicle or fixed to the ground.
They are controlled remotely or by a professional operator
who moves in a cab along with the crane.

FORKLIFTS
industrial forklifts are used to move material across sites
and distances. On construction sites, bricks and wood as
well as tile and other interior construction materials are
often delivered on pallets. They are easy to ship when
packaged together.

SCAFFOLDING
Scaffolding is a temporary structure that is typically made
from metal poles and wood planks and used to support
construction workers, inspectors, cleaners, and others who
need to work at height.
4. CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT
Concrete construction equipment encompasses a wide range
of specialized tools and machinery used throughout the entire
concrete construction process, from mixing the raw ingredients
to finishing the final poured surface.
STRIPING MACHINE
A striping machine is the piece of
equipment used to mark paint lines onto
foot paths and road ways. Striping
machines can vary from handheld
machines, used for small parking lot
jobs, to striping trucks, which are used
for marking highways and airport
runways.
6. MASONRY EQUIPMENT

MASONRY EQUIPMENT
BRICK HAMMER
A brick hammer (AKA a Mason’s Hammer) is not like your standard,
everyday-use hammer. It is a blunt, square-tipped hammer designed
specifically for breaking rock, brick, and concrete. The other side is thin and
chisel-like, designed for chipping away, or scoring small areas of stone, brick,
or concrete for more accurate breaks.
MARGIN TROWEL
This is a flat-nosed trowel used to place small amounts of mortar into tight
spaces. This is the closest thing to a universal all-purpose trowel for all types
of masonry projects that you will find.
COLD CHISEL
The name “cold chisel” is a bit deceptive. It is not for use in cold weather, it is
used for cutting cold metal. This makes it perfect for cutting stone. These
are made of hardened steel with a cutting edge on one side and a large
handle designed to protect your hands when pounding the chisel with a
large ball-peen hammer.

MASONRY EQUIPMENT
WHEELBARROW
Nothing is more important for a masonry project than a rugged, high-quality
wheelbarrow. It is used for so many different things, hauling decorative concrete pavers
and brick, mixing mortar and concrete, removing construction waste, and so much
more.
MASONRY SAW
Masonry saws are not necessarily “must-haves” for concrete, stone, or brick building
projects, but they are definitely nice to have. These saws have a lot of names, concrete
saw (consaw for short), road saw, cut-off saw, or quick-cut saw. These range from small
hand-held saws to huge walk-behind saws used to cut through asphalt or concrete.
They use diamond saw blades in order to cut through stone, brick, concrete, and more.
Most of these saws require water to cool the blades because of all the friction and heat
generated by the cutting process.
