THEY WILL GAIN A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE FACTORS INFLUENCING EQUIPMENT SELECTION
FOR SPECIFIC CONSTRUCTION TASKS.
CONSTRUCTION
EQUIPMENT
also sometimes called heavy machinery, refers to
a wide range of specialized vehicles and
machines used for various tasks in the
construction industry. These machines are
essential for performing tasks that would be too
difficult, dangerous, or time-consuming to do by
hand.

TYPES OF CONTRUCTION EQUIPMENT
1. PPE (PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT)
refers to any equipment worn to minimize exposure to
hazards that can cause injury or illness. It's essentially a
barrier between you and potential dangers in your work
environment.

Common types of PPE include:

For the head: Hard hats, safety glasses, face shields
For the body: Coveralls, safety vests, respirators, hearing
protection
For the hands: Gloves for various purposes (chemical
resistance, cut resistance, etc.)
For the feet: Safety boots with features like steel toes or
slip resistance
TYPES OF CONTRUCTION EQUIPMENT
2. EARTHWORKS EQUIPMENT Earthworks equipment, also sometimes called earthmoving
equipment, refers to a specific category of heavy
machinery designed for tasks involving the movement and
manipulation of soil, rock, and other earthen materials. These
machines are essential for various stages of construction
projects.

Common types of Earthworks Equipment:

Motor Grader
Excavators
Dump Truck
Bulldozer
Loaders
Scrapers
EARTHWORKS EQUIPMENT
MOTOR GRADER
Motor graders use a long blade to grade hard ground.
They are often used for preparing a road for asphalt
surfacing, which is why they are often called road
graders. Motor graders come in many different models,
usually based on how much power you need, the
operating weight, and the blade pull.

Motor graders are used for fine grading. Their primary

purpose is to prepare a flat and wide surface. These
surfaces could be roads, highways, or even foundations
for large buildings.
EARTHWORKS EQUIPMENT
EXCAVATORS
Excavators are used for digging, mining, grading
landscapes, assisting with road construction, canal
dredging, and the removal of debris from a construction
site.
Excavators come in many different sizes and have different
specialties depending on the type.

For example, a crawler excavator is used for digging and

demolition, while mini excavators, also called compact
excavators, are used for tight manoeuvring in narrow job
sites during a demolition. Dragline excavators offer an
underwater option, used for larger-scale projects, such as
dredging.
EARTHWORKS EQUIPMENT
DUMP TRUCK

Dump trucks help with transporting large amounts of

materials at a time. They are often used to haul loose
material, such as soil, gravel, demolition debris, and
mining materials. Use a dump truck to drive materials
to and from locations and then empty the contents at a
destination. Most dump trucks can travel on typical
public streets, while others are excessively huge and
must be utilized onsite.
EARTHWORKS EQUIPMENT
BULLDOZER
Bulldozers are ideal for pushing heavy materials from
place to place, including specific tasks such as
backfilling.

Three Types of Bulldozers depending on your needs.

Crawler bulldozer is best for smaller sites where
you want to push irregular terrain through fields or
plains.
Wheel bulldozers, on the other hand, are best for
large earthmoving projects like leveling grounds for
stadiums.
Mini bulldozers are good for small spaces and
residential areas.
EARTHWORKS EQUIPMENT
LOADERS Loader is a vital machine designed for scooping, loading,
and transporting loose materials like soil, rock, sand,
demolition debris, and more. These heavy machines,
equipped with a large bucket at the front and a short
moving arm, are essential for efficient material handling in
construction tasks.

Two main types of loaders: wheeled and tracked.

Wheeled. are handy for tasks in parking lots, road
construction, and building sites with smooth rollers and
compacted soil surfaces.
Tracked or crawler loaders. are indispensable in
rough terrain or uneven surfaces where wheeled
vehicles may face challenges.
EARTHWORKS EQUIPMENT
SCRAPERS
Scrapers, also called wheel tractor scrapers, are
commonly used to scrape and level surfaces. These heavy-
duty earthmoving machines can also haul earth and
materials, such as dirt and gravel, more than just a short
distance—they can move it from one job site to another.

Scrapers offer extreme efficiency over other earthmoving

vehicles when it comes to transporting materials. Their all-
in-on productive approach can be measured by their cycle
times—the time it takes to load, haul, dump, and get back
into position, and a single scraper operator can move up to
72 cubic yards of material per cycle, which can cut your
labor in half.
3. MATERIAL HANDLING EQUIPMENT
Material handling equipment refers to any machine or tool used to assist in the
movement, storage, control, and protection of materials, goods, and products throughout
the entire supply chain. This encompasses a wide range of equipment, from simple tools
to complex automated systems, that play a crucial role in streamlining logistics and
ensuring efficient operation of various industries.

TYPES OF MATERIAL HANDLING EQUIPMENT:

Crane
Forklifts
Scaffolding

CRANE
are used to lift or lower objects and move them
horizontally. Either way, all cranes are equipped with
pulleys and cables that are useful when it comes to moving
objects around.
They are usually temporary structures that are either
mounted on a custom-built vehicle or fixed to the ground.
They are controlled remotely or by a professional operator
who moves in a cab along with the crane.

FORKLIFTS
industrial forklifts are used to move material across sites
and distances. On construction sites, bricks and wood as
well as tile and other interior construction materials are
often delivered on pallets. They are easy to ship when
packaged together.

SCAFFOLDING
Scaffolding is a temporary structure that is typically made
from metal poles and wood planks and used to support
construction workers, inspectors, cleaners, and others who
need to work at height.
4. CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT
Concrete construction equipment encompasses a wide range
of specialized tools and machinery used throughout the entire
concrete construction process, from mixing the raw ingredients
to finishing the final poured surface.

TYPES OF CONCRETING EQUIPMENT:

Concrete Pump - Screeds
Concrete Mixer - Trowels
Concrete Vibrator - Formworks
CONCRETE PUMP
A concrete pump is used to transport liquid
concrete from the production to the casting
area. It works by having one piston draw the
concrete from the source and another pushes it
into the discharge pipe.

Two types of concrete pump:

Line concrete pumps are typically used in
small construction projects.
Boom concrete pumps for big construction
projects.
CONCRETE MIXER
As the name suggests, this equipment mixes
cement, aggregates and water to create concrete.
It may have the same function as a batching plant
but a concrete mixer is usually a single machine.
Batching plants, on the other hand, belongs to a
whole production line.

Depending on the type, a concrete mixer can

produce concrete by batch or continuously.
Batch concrete mixers are ideal for small projects
where concrete is not on constant demand. While
continuous mixers are typically used in big
projects like roads, bridges, dams, etc
CONCRETE VIBRATOR
It’s unavoidable for small bubbles to form when
concrete is poured. But when left to dry, these
bubbles create holes within the concrete and
affect its integrity. This is why concrete vibrators
are important. By shaking the newly poured
concrete, a vibrator forces the air bubbles out.
This creates a more compact and stable slab.

Internal vibrators - they are usually cheaper

and offer more.
External vibrator - for vertical constructions
like walls
SCREEDS
Screeds are typically made of aluminum,
magnesium, steel or wood – though there are
exceptions. As a screed passes over wet concrete,
it pushes large aggregate down and brings
“creme” to the surface. They leave concrete
surfaces smooth, flat, and free from any
deformities.
TROWELS
Also known as a smoothing trowel. are used for
final finishing touches on the concrete surface,
creating a smooth and even texture. It is usually
made of wood or plastic or steel and is available in
market in various sizes as per the requirement.
The use of trowel blades provides a hard polished
finish on the surface of concrete, meanwhile
eliminates the risk of leaving burnish marks on
concrete.
CONCRETE FORMWORKS
Formwork molds the concrete to the desired size
and shape, and controls its position and
alignment. It is a temporary structure that
supports its own weight and the freshly placed
concrete. Formwork comes in various materials
like wood, metal, or plastic.
5. ROAD CONSTRUCTION

STRIPING MACHINE
A striping machine is the piece of
equipment used to mark paint lines onto
foot paths and road ways. Striping
machines can vary from handheld
machines, used for small parking lot
jobs, to striping trucks, which are used
for marking highways and airport
runways.
6. MASONRY EQUIPMENT
GROUP 7
MASONRY EQUIPMENT
BRICK HAMMER
A brick hammer (AKA a Mason’s Hammer) is not like your standard,
everyday-use hammer. It is a blunt, square-tipped hammer designed
specifically for breaking rock, brick, and concrete. The other side is thin and
chisel-like, designed for chipping away, or scoring small areas of stone, brick,
or concrete for more accurate breaks.

MARGIN TROWEL
This is a flat-nosed trowel used to place small amounts of mortar into tight
spaces. This is the closest thing to a universal all-purpose trowel for all types
of masonry projects that you will find.

COLD CHISEL
The name “cold chisel” is a bit deceptive. It is not for use in cold weather, it is
used for cutting cold metal. This makes it perfect for cutting stone. These
are made of hardened steel with a cutting edge on one side and a large
handle designed to protect your hands when pounding the chisel with a
large ball-peen hammer.

MASONRY EQUIPMENT

WHEELBARROW
Nothing is more important for a masonry project than a rugged, high-quality
wheelbarrow. It is used for so many different things, hauling decorative concrete pavers
and brick, mixing mortar and concrete, removing construction waste, and so much
more.

MASONRY SAW
Masonry saws are not necessarily “must-haves” for concrete, stone, or brick building
projects, but they are definitely nice to have. These saws have a lot of names, concrete
saw (consaw for short), road saw, cut-off saw, or quick-cut saw. These range from small
hand-held saws to huge walk-behind saws used to cut through asphalt or concrete.
They use diamond saw blades in order to cut through stone, brick, concrete, and more.
Most of these saws require water to cool the blades because of all the friction and heat
generated by the cutting process.
