VIDEOS AS MULTIMEDIA TOOLS

 INTORODUCTION

Multimedia is used in almost all dailly activities, wether it be in project

presentation,entertainment or even in education.
-Multimedia can be defined as the combination of pictures, text,
sound ,video and animations.
-A video is a set of moving images that have been captured or created
electronically by a computer
-Professional digital video was introduced in 1986
-DVD(digital versatile disk) was later in 1996 and they can be used to
read videos on compact disks
 GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF VIDEOS

 They can either be analog or digital in nature

 Have an aspect ratio(dimensions of width and height)
 Have a frame rate(speed at which video frames appear) .This can be
calculated by the formula ,frame rate= number of frames/time used.
The frame rate is measured in frames per second(fps)
 All videos have an extention
 They can be compressed and modified using video editors
 All videos can be streamed. Streaming is the process of playing and
transmiting video files over the internet
 CREATION OF VIDEOS

 Videos can be created by using electronic devices such as a

cameras
 They can also be created using video editors to combine many
images and processing them.
 Some video editors frequently used in this task are :
-ClipChap and luxea pro used by window’s computers
-Adobe premiere rush used for fast edits on desktop
-Filmora used by beginners
-And iMovie which is mostly used by apple uses
 VIDEO BROADCASTING FORMATS
These are conventions in which videos are shared to a large number of
humans in a particular locality(country or continenet). The most used
video broadcasting formats include:
-NTSC(national television system comitee) which is the broadcasting
format used in the united states
-PAL(Phase alternating line) which is the broadcasting format mostly
used in north American countries
-SECAM(sequential colour with memory) this is the broadcasting format
used in France

 TYPES OF VIDEOS

There are mainly two types of videos which include analog and digital
videos.
 ANALOG VIDEOS

These are videos represented as a continuos(time varying)

signals.They have a clear resolution
They are three main analog video systems which are:

-The 625/50 PAL system which is used in Russia ,France

-The 525/60 NTSC system mostly used in North amrican

countries and in Japan
-The 625/50 SECAM mostly used in eastern Europe
-All these video systems are composite and have an aspect ratio of
4:3
Interfaces used in analog video transmition include :s-
video,RGB and the VGI interfaces
The traditional cable used in the transmition of these videos
is the coaxial cable , but it can also be done using twiwted
pair copper cables, optical fibres and even wirelessly

 DIGITAL VIDEOS
-These are videos reprersented as discrete values
-This system favourises easy copying , multicastingand sharing of
videos
-Ports used in the translition of digital videos include the
HDMI(high definition multimedia interface) and the DVI(digital
video interface) ports
 Analog videos can be converted to digital ones by using a VHS
player to the personal computer with a SCART conversion cable

 VIDEO EXTENSIONS
These are the different formats used to store videos and they include
 MOV(movie) developed by apple computers for quick time video
player
 WMV(window media video) developed by Microsoft for streaming
videos
 AVI(audio video interface) developed by micosoft for media player
 MPEG-2 which is the standard file format for DVD
 MPEG-4 standard file format for blu-ray disk
 FVL(flash video) format used to deliver videos over the internet
adobe frush player

 VIDEO COMPRESSION
-This is the process of reducing the number of bits needed to represent a
video without compromising its visual quality.
-The main advantage of compression is that it reduces the memory space
occupied by the video

 ADVANTAGES OF VIDEOS
- Education: videos can be used as a powerful tool in learning, good
examples are tutorials on youtube which are very explicit to
understand courses
- Information: They can be used as a tool to have uptodate and relevant
informations
- Entertainment: They can be used in cinema halls and in games with the
main aim of entertaining people
- Advertising: videos can be used marketing in order to advertise a new
brand product nation or world wide over the world
 CONCLUSION
Eventhough videos are powerfull multimedia tools and have many
advantages , they can have some drawbacks such as:
-propagation of false and irrelevant information
-They require expert skills to edit and produce good quality videos
-They can also be difficult to acces and download
