Schools around the world
A – US
Brooklyn Free School in New York, US, isn’t a typical school.
Students and teachers decide the rules together. Students
are three to eighteen years old and they don’t do homework
or tests. They don’t study in traditional classes either.
Teachers work with every student to decide what to study.
Each student learns about things that really interest them.
Some students prefer to work alone, some work on projects
in groups. They choose when to hang out with friends or
play.
B – Argentina
Over 2,000 young people have most of their classes at a
stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and it’s even got a
university. The stadium is the home of the River Plate
football team, although people do other sports there too,
like basketball and swimming. Students study typical
subjects, but sometimes school finishes early because there
is football practice.
C – Bangladesh
In Bangladesh from June to October it rains a lot. Water
covers many roads and it’s impossible for students to go to
school. Now, they’ve got 111 schools, libraries and medical
centres on boats that are open all year. Around 30 students
have classes on each boat with one teacher. The boats have
blackboards, computers and hundreds of books. Some even
have small playgrounds so students can do exercise.
