Surface Finishing Process:

•Surface finishing is the process of modiying a

surface to improve corrosion ressitence,
durability or apperance.
•Abrasive material: Hard material used to grind,
cut or polish softer material.
• e.g. diamond, silicon carbide

•Lapping:
•Lapping is a machining process that uses an
abrasive material to remove a small amount of
material from the surface of a workpiece,
resulting in a very smooth surface finish. Lapping
is often used to finish precision components
such as bearings, gears, and piston rings.

Surface Finishing Process:
•Honing
•Honing is a machining process that uses a series
of abrasive stones to remove material from the
inside of a bore, such as the cylinder bore of an
engine. Honing is used to improve the accuracy
and surface finish of bores.

Surface Finishing Process:
•Superfinishing
•Superfinishing is a machining process that uses a
very fine abrasive material to remove a very
small amount of material from the surface of a
workpiece, resulting in an extremely smooth
surface finish. Superfinishing is often used to
finish critical components such as medical
implants and aerospace parts.

Surface Finishing Process:
•Polishing
•Polishing is a machining process that uses a fine
abrasive material to remove a small amount of
material from the surface of a workpiece,
resulting in a bright and reflective finish.
Polishing is often used to improve the
appearance of metal and plastic products.

Surface Finishing Process:
•Buffing
•Buffing is a machining process that uses a soft
abrasive material to remove a very small amount
of material from the surface of a workpiece,
resulting in a very smooth and shiny finish.
Buffing is often used to finish jewelry,
silverware, and other decorative items.

Surface Finishing Process:
•Electroplating
•Electroplating is a process that uses an electric
current to deposit a thin layer of metal onto the
surface of a workpiece. Electroplating is used to
protect the workpiece from corrosion, improve
its electrical conductivity, or give it a decorative
finish.

•Galvanizing
•Galvanizing is a process that deposits a thin layer
of zinc onto the surface of a workpiece.
Galvanizing is used to protect the workpiece
from corrosion.
