choreographer, known for her unique and innovative interpretations of classical ballets.
Trained in classical ballet and contemporary dance, Masilo fuses these techniques with
African dance steps to create her high-speed style. Little is known about Masilo’s
upbringing and childhood years, except that her beginnings in the dance world started at a
very young age – with her all-girl street dance troupe. They performed all around the city,
dancing to Michael Jackson’s songs and moves. The troupe was invited to the Art and
Dance festival, organized by the Dance Factory – a school whose purpose is to nurture
and unearth young talents.

Dada Masilo immediately caught the school director’s eye, Suzette Le Sueur – who has
been her guide along her dance career and invited her to train professionally in the school.
Le Sueur once said in an interview: “The first thing that impressed me about her was her
incredible focus. I was watching her while she was watching a dance performance. She
obviously loved what she was watching but did so with extraordinary focus and
concentration. On stage she commands an amazing sense of theater. It is a world with
which she is completely at home”. https://theculturetrip.com/africa/south-africa/articles/dada-masilo-

MADOSINI & PEDRO

Madosini is one of the best players of the Xhosa traditional instruments

including Isitolotolo, Mrhube and Uhadi. The first is called Jew’s Harp in
English and the other two are musical bows using the mouth or a calabash as
a resonator to amplify the notes produced by the string of a bow. Her music
takes us to the well springs of music and leaves us entranced at the sight of
such rich instruments producing so many melodies and rhythms at the same
time.
Madosini has played in festivals all over the world and collaborated with many
famous musicians such as Gilberto Gil, Ringo and Thandiswa Mazwayi.
Madosini’s music carries the earliest roots of Jazz. Her latest collaboration
with musicians Hilton Schilder, Jonny Blundell, Lulu Plaitjies and Pedro Espi-
Sanchis has resulted in the recording of an African/Jazz fusion CD under the
name of AmaThongo and various concerts around Africa. Madosini and Pedro
have performed together at many music festivals as well as storytelling and
poetry festivals around the world, notably the Medellin International Poetry
Festival in Colombia.
Her unique knowledge of early African stories was recognized recently and
during the last few years she has been part of the “Stories from Cave to Cave”
project funded by the European Economic Community Cultural Fund. As part
of this programme she has been telling her powerful stories in South Africa,
Spain, France and Italy. She is a born story teller.
Though Madosini is making a name for herself in the preservation of indigenous
music and stories of the Eastern Cape, globally hers is a lonely journey. As
African folk tales and music is constantly ignored by mainstream media.
Madosini is a human treasure and library of tradition.
