LEARNER CALA GUIDE

Cala component: A

Learning area: Mathematics

Level: Ordinary level

Cala type: pen and paper

Syllabus topic: Statistics

Syllabus sub-topic: Data collection and presentation

Competences/skills: gathering, recording, representation, calculation and analysis

Background: An upcoming entrepreneur wants to start a car selling business. However, he is not sure
which brand sells fast in Harare.

You are required to;

1. Gather data on the number of cars that pass on a highway over a period of an hour and
record the results on a frequency table. (5)
2. Calculate the mean, median and mode type of car. (5)
3. Represent the data on a bar graph. (8)
4. What type of car would you recommend the entrepreneur to sell. Justify your answer. (2)

Cala tips

• Target a busy road like Bulawayo Road

• Remember a frequency table system of recording data
• Use formula where necessary.
LEARNER CALA GUIDE

Cala component: B

Learning area: Mathematics

Level: Ordinary

Cala type: pen and paper

Syllabus topic: Mensuration of plain shapes

Syllabus-sub topic: Area

Competences: Measuring, calculating, problem solving and decision making.

Background; A couple bought a house in a certain high-density suburb, but the house was not
painted. Thus, the couple decide to paint their house.

You are required to;

1. Measure and record the dimensions of an ordinary room. (4)

2. Calculate the area of the room’s walls. (4)
3. Given that a 5litre bucket of paint can cover 50 square metres, research on the price of 5litre
bucket of paint. (2)
4. Find out how many 5litre buckets are needed to paint the room. (5)
5. What is the total cost of the paint needed to cover the room. (5)

Cala tips

Consider units when calculating area (square metres)

Use formula for area of the room.

LEARNER CALA GUIDE

Cala component: C

Learning area: Mathematics

Level: Ordinary level

Cala type: pen and paper

Syllabus topic: Sets

Syllabus sub-topic: Venn diagrams

Competences: research, data presentation and analysis

Background; A pastor from a certain Christian church got a donor who wanted to donate Bibles to his
congregants. Therefore, he wanted to collect data on the congregants on who preferred English,
Shona both language bibles.

You are required to;

1. Collect data of people who have Shona bibles, English bibles or both and those who do not
have any bible, in your church. (10)
2. Represent data on a clearly labelled Venn diagram. (5)
3. From the findings, what language is being read by many people and why is that? (1)
4. What could be the reason why others do not even have a Bible? (4)

Cala tips

Intersection of sets is the number of people with both Shona and English bibles

Universal set is the number of people in the church.

LEARNER CALA GUIDE

Cala component: D

Learning Area: Mathematics

Level: Ordinary level

Cala type: pen and paper

Syllabus topic: Mensuration of solid shapes

Syllabus sub-topic: volume

Competences/skills: sketching, drawing, calculation and critical thinking

Background; Victory Academy wants to start a broiler project. So, the school administration intends
to come up with a chicken run in form of a rectangular prism.

You are required to;

1. Come up with the measurements of a rectangular prism of your choice, big enough to
accommodate 100 chickens. (10)
2. Calculate the volume of the prism using the measurements obtained above. (5)
3. On a plain paper, draw the rectangular prism with the above measurements. (5)

Cala tips

Use formula for the volume of the prism

For drawing purposes, use a scale of 1cm:5m

LEARNER CALA GUIDE

Cala component: E

Learning area: Mathematics

Level: Ordinary level

Cala type: pen and paper

Syllabus Topic: Variation

Syllabus sub-topic: Types of variation

Competences: discovery, critical thinking, analysing and decision making

Background; Mr Mandizvidza a famous farmer monitors the production of fish at his farm, in one of
his fish ponds. He discovered that the multiplication rate of fish is proportional to the feed.

You are required to;

1. State the type of variation discovered by the farmer. (2)

2. Determine the other two forms of variation giving meaningful examples. (4)
3. Deduce some measurements that can be adapted by Mr Mandizvidza in constructing a fair
size pond for all the fish in his farm and sketch it. (8)
4. Suggest the benefits associated with putting all the fish in one pond. (6)

Cala tips

• For the sketch diagram, use a scale of 1cm:5m

• Sketch the diagram on a plain paper
• Obtain the measurements of the pond from the ground

TEACHER CALA GUIDE

Learners should determine the main types of variation giving examples

For the measurements learners should obtain them from the ground since the pond is to be dug on
the ground

Meaningful benefits should be stated accordingly.
