Our new lesson for this morning is about “Sewing
Household Linens”

What basic tools used in sewing a garment?

Do you know how to use these tools properly?

Here are the sewing tools classified according to


their use: Yes, Teacher!

1. For Sewing
a. Hand Needle – needles are made of fine steel.
Their points are sharp and the eyes are smooth and
well polished. This is the example of hand needles.

b. Sewing Machine Needles – needles come in


assorted sizes that allow to work in different
fabrics. The smaller the number, the fine the needle.

c. Needle Threader – to use, slip the flexible wire


loop through the eye of a hand needle, feed the
thread through it and pull the wire back out,
bringing the thread with it.

d. Thread – are sold in balls or spools carrying 50 to


100 yards. Silk nylon and dacron are the most
elastic example: mercerized cotton thread

2. For Cutting-
a. Pinking Shears – this pair of scissors has saw
tooth edge rather than straight blade. They are used
to prevent cut fabric edges and sears from
unravelling.

b. Fabric Shears – they are large scissors design to


cut fabrics.

c. Sewing shears – small scissors used for cutting


notches, clipping curves and snipping threads.

3. For Measuring
a. Tape measure – a 60 inch tape measure that has
members on both sides starting at opposite ends.

This is the example of tape measure.

b. Ruler – this comes in wood, plastic or metal. Its


measurement are in inches and centimeters. Its is
used for long lines.
c. gauge – these are made from pieces of cardboard.
They are cut of different widths. Gauges simplify
measuring hems and sear allowances.

d. French curve – this is a curved card board used


for drawing curve lines like the arm, eye, neckline
and crotch.

Values Integration: these are the different tools


used in sewing. We must learn how to properly used
these tools so that it could not cause you any harm
and accident because tools help sewing to more
efficient, enjoyable easy and fast.
