• Hydropower is used to generate hydro-

electricity.
HYDRO-
ELECTRICITY? • Sixth of the world's electricity comes
from hydropower, which is more than
either nuclear power and all other
renewable sources combined.
WHO • In 1878 the first ever hydroelectric power
C R E AT E D scheme was developed by Sir William
THE FIRST Armstrong.
HYDROELEC • It was used to power a single arc lamp in his art
TRIC gallery.
POWER
SCHEME?
HOW DOES A HYDRO-ELECTRIC
DAM WORK?
• Most hydroelectric power plants contain an outlet, or location where the water
goes after flowing downstream, a gate or valve to regulate how much water
flows out of the reservoir. Just before water runs down a hill or over the top of a
dam, it gains potential energy. Water travels downhill and turns its potential
energy into kinetic energy.

ELECTRICITY
• One advantage of using hydro-electricity is that it does not produce carbon
dioxide.
• Hydro-electricity has one of the lowest lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions for
electricity
• Hydropower is a renewable source of energy. The energy generated through
hydropower relies on the water cycle, which is driven by the sun, making it
renewable.

• One disadvantage of using hydro-electricity is that there is a lot of ecosystem
damage and loss of land .
• it can destroy biologically rich and productive lowland and riverine valley
forests, marshland and grasslands.
• drought and seasonal changes in rainfall can severely limit hydropower. Water
may also be lost by evaporation.
• another disadvantage of hydroelectric dams is the need to relocate the people the
people where the reservoirs are planned
LARGEST HYDRO-ELECTRIC
POWER PLANT IN THE WORLD.
• The three gorges dam in China, which hold back the Yangtze river, is the largest
hydroelectric dam in the world, in terms of electricity production. The dam is
2,335 meters (7,660 feet) long and 185 metres (607 feet) tall and has enough
generators to produce 22,500 megawatts of power.
