NetApp ONTAP Deploy–Best Practices
§ Backup the NetApp® ONTAP® Deploy database and keep a copy in a separate location
§ After any change in configuration, a new backup should be taken
§ VMware Snapshot copies of the ONTAP Deploy VM work as well

§ ONTAP Deploy must be available when:

§ It is the mediator for two-node clusters
§ It is used as a Capacity Pool license manager

§ ONTAP Deploy is backwards compatible with ONTAP Select

§ Update ONTAP Deploy before updating ONTAP Select

§ ONTAP Select updates are done the same way as on NetApp FAS/AFF:
§ However, the ONTAP Select code is a separate binary because it is compiled differently than the
ONTAP for FAS/AFF

NetApp ONTAP Deploy–What You Need To Know
Keep in mind Recommendation

NetApp® ONTAP® Deploy cannot discover / import Make sure you have a backup of the ONTAP
an existing ONTAP Select cluster Deploy database

Cannot change the ONTAP Deploy VM IP address Create a new ONTAP Deploy VM and restore the
after setup database

Only one ONTAP Deploy vCenter plug-in per Use a centralized Deploy per vCenter, or use
vCenter server linked vCenter servers

Restoring the ONTAP Deploy database requires

Keep a copy of the ONTAP Deploy VM (VMware
the same version of ONTAP Deploy as when the
NetApp Snapshot™ copies or binary)
backup was taken

subscription model on premises model
§ Planning is difficult and user needs § User have a direct relation
the flexibility between software and hardware
§ Resources are consumed

Passthrough / DirectPath I/O devices are different than RDMs in a few critical ways:
§ Total number of passthrough devices is host limited (16 max)
§ Adding passthrough devices requires a host reboot

Key Takeaways

§ The NetApp® ONTAP® Select evaluation is free for 90 days. There are NO
restrictions in terms of VM size, cluster size, capacity, or performance.
§ Single-node evaluation clusters are extremely easy to install.
§ Performance is hardware dependent.
