SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE

Topic: Understanding Geological Hazards: Earthquake, Volcanic Eruptions, and Landslides

Subject: Earth Science

Lesson Code: S11/12ES-If-30
Grade Year level: 11 Week: 6

I. Learning Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Identify the different geological processes that lead to hazards such as earthquakes,
volcanic eruptions, and landslides.
2. Analyze case studies to understand the impacts of these hazards on human
communities and the environment.
3. Develop strategies for mitigating the risks associated with geological hazards.

II. Subject Matter:

1. Topic: Understanding Geological Hazards: Earthquakes, Volcanic Eruptions, and Landslides
2. References:
a. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/
b. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/natural-disasters/volcanoes/
c. https://www.undrr.org/terminology/landslide

3. Instructional Materials:
 PowerPoint presentation
 Handouts with case studies and diagrams
 Whiteboard and markers
 Internet access for research (optional)

III. Learning Procedure:

Introduction (15 minutes):
1. Begin the lesson by asking students if they have heard about any recent natural disasters or
geological events in the news.
2. Introduce the topic of geological hazards and explain that today's lesson will focus on three
major types: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and landslides.
3. Present the objectives for the lesson and outline the activities that will be conducted.
Main Lesson (45 minutes): 4. Start with earthquakes:
 Define what an earthquake is and how it occurs (tectonic plate movement).
 Discuss the different types of seismic waves and their effects on the Earth's surface.
 Show examples of earthquake-prone regions globally and locally (if applicable).
 Present case studies of significant earthquakes and their impacts on communities and
infrastructure.
5. Proceed to volcanic eruptions:
 Define volcanoes and explain the various types (e.g., shield, stratovolcano).
 Discuss the processes leading to volcanic eruptions and the factors influencing
eruption styles.
 Show examples of famous volcanic eruptions and their effects on the environment and
society.
 Present case studies of recent volcanic events and their impacts.
6. Conclude with landslides:
 Define landslides and their causes, including geological and human factors.
 Discuss the different types of landslides (e.g., rockfalls, debris flows) and their
characteristics.
 Show examples of areas prone to landslides and recent landslide events.
 Present case studies illustrating the consequences of landslides on communities and
ecosystems.
Activity (25 minutes):
1. Divide students into small groups and assign each group a case study related to one of the
geological hazards discussed.
2. Instruct students to analyze their case study, identify the primary hazard, describe its causes
and impacts, and propose potential mitigation strategies.
3. Each group will present their findings to the class, allowing for questions and discussion after
each presentation.
4. Facilitate a brief reflection session where students compare and contrast the different hazards
and mitigation strategies discussed.
Conclusion (5 minutes):
1. Summarize the key points covered in the lesson, emphasizing the importance of
understanding geological hazards for disaster preparedness and risk reduction.
2. Encourage students to continue exploring the topic outside of class and to stay informed
about current events related to geological hazards.
Evaluation:
 The student will summarize the topic orally, while the teacher gives reinforcement,
afterwards let the students do a short quiz about the overall idea of the topic. The quiz
are;
1. What are the three main geological hazards?
2. What causes earthquakes?
3. What are the methods used to mitigate volcanic eruption risks?
4. What are the different types of landslides?
5. What are the methods used to predict and mitigate landslide risks?
