1. Product Concept
1.1 Background of product release
One of our main elevator models has been NexWay-S Series-AW, which uses a worm-geared
traction machine. However, the market is increasingly demanding less-expensive, energy-efficient
elevators using a gearless traction machine with a PM motor. In response to such market demand,
we are introducing a new model, NEXIEZ-MR <GPSX>, as a successor of NexWay-S Series-AW.
This cost-competitive NEXIEZ-MR <GPSX> features a traction machine with a PM motor and a
2:1 (single-wrap) roping system.

1.3 Ecology - using energy wisely -
1.3.1 Regenerative Converter (option)
The elevator usually travels using power from power supply (powered operation); however, when it
travels down with a heavy car load or up with a light car load (regenerative operation), the traction
machine functions as a power generator.
Although the power generated by the traction machine is usually dissipated as heat, Regenerative
Converter transmits the power back to the distribution transformer and feeds to the electrical network
in the building along with power from power supply.
Compared to the same type of elevator without Regenerative Converter, this system provides
energy-saving effect of up to 35%. (Reduction in CO2 emission: 1400 kg/year) In addition,
Regenerative Converter has effect on decreasing harmonic currents.

1.3.2 Traction Machine with PM Motor
In the joint-lapped motor in traction machine,
the iron core is split like a hinge, which allows coils
to be wound around the core more densely,
resulting in improved motor efficiency and compactness.
It produces a high-density magnetic field for compact motors
that conserve energy and resources and reduces CO2 emissions.
In addition, we have adopted a 2:1(single-wrap) roping system,
which lessens load on the traction machine,
to allow further reduction in traction machine size.

Joint-lapped PM motor

1.3.3 LED lighting

Energy-efficient LEDs consume less power than conventional lamps.
Used for ceiling lights and hall lanterns, LEDs boost the overall energy
performance of the building. Furthermore, the long service life
eliminates the need for frequent lamp replacement.

1.3.4 Energy saving function

(1) Energy-saving operation – number of cars [ESO-N] (∑AI-22: Option, ∑AI-2200C: Standard)
The number of service cars is automatically reduced to some extent without affecting passenger
waiting time.

(2) Energy-saving operation – allocation control [ESO-W] (∑AI-2200C only)

Based on each elevator’s potential energy consumption, the system selects the elevator that best
balances operational efficiency and energy consumption. Please refer to page 9 for details.

(3) Car light/fan shut off – automatic [CLO-A/CFO-A]

The car lighting/ventilation fan is automatically turned off if there are no calls for a specified
period.

1.4 Efficiency - Smooth Mobility by Efficient Group Control -
1.4.1 Group control (ΣAI-22, ΣAI-2200C) (option)
Mitsubishi Electric’s breakthrough AI Neural Network (Note 1) technology in elevator control enhances
transport efficiency and reduces passenger waiting time by optimum car allocation, which allows
elevators use energy effectively. Two basic group control systems offer a variety of innovative group
control features.
(Note 1) The features introduced on these pages are applicable to ΣAI-2200C only.

Performance (ΣAI-2200C)

Conventional group control ΣAI-2200C

Group Control System Suitable Building Size Number of Cars in a Group

ΣAI-22 System Small to medium 3 to 4 cars

Large
ΣAI-2200C System (Especially, a building with 3 to 8 cars
dynamic traffic conditions)

(1) Expert system and fuzzy logic

Selects best operation for individual traffic conditions and building use
An intelligent “Expert system” is employed, that incorporates the practical knowledge and
experience of elevator group control experts as “Knowledge Database”. Traffic conditions are
monitored and analyzed using the “if-then decision rule” of the database. Additionally,
“fragmentally and fuzzy logic intelligence concepts” are used to reduce passenger waiting time
throughout the building.

(2) Cooperative optimization assignment
Forecasts a near future hall call to reduce long waits
When a hall call is registered, the algorithm assumes a near future call that could require long
waits. Through evaluation of the registered hall call and the forecasted call, the best car is
assigned. All cars work cooperatively for optimum operation.

Conventional system ΣAI-2200C

[A hall call is registered at 6th Fl] [A hall call is registered at 6th Fl]
Allocates the closest car No. B. Allocate car No. 4, which is running upward.
[Another hall call is soon registered at 11th Fl] [Another hall call is soon registered at 11th Fl]
Allocates car No. D, resulting in long wait of 26 sec. Allocates car No. 2, which immediately arrives at the floor.

(3) Psychological waiting time evaluation

Minimizes waiting time in each hall
After comprehensive study, Mitsubishi Electric’s research has formulated a psychological
evaluation function based on the principle: “the frustration of a passenger waiting for car arrival is
proportional to the square of the actual waiting time.” Cars are assigned to hall calls after
evaluating the coefficient diversity of such factors as “forecasted waiting time,” “probability of
being bypassed by a fully loaded car,” “probable time required for traveling after car assignment”
and “current car load”.

(4) Immediate prediction indication [AIL] (option)

Indicates next car arrival
Once a passenger has registered a hall call, the car that is able to respond most quickly is
selected.
The hall lantern for the selected car lights up and a chime sounds once to indicate which hall
doors will open. The lantern begins to flash and the chime sounds twice as the car approaches
the hall, thus guiding waiting passengers smoothly to the appropriate car.

(5) Distinction of traffic flow with Neural networks [NN]

Selects best service pattern for each time zone and passenger flow
Traffic flows in a building are constantly monitored using neural networks technology, and the
optimum operational pattern, such as Lunchtime Service or Up Peak Service, is selected or
cancelled accordingly at the appropriate time.

(6) Energy-saving operation (Allocation control) [ESO-W]
Maximizing operational efficiency and minimizing energy consumption

This system selects the elevator in a group that best balances operational efficiency and
energy consumption. Priority is given to operational efficiency during peak hours and energy
efficiency during non-peak hours.
Car allocation that maximizes operational efficiency does not necessarily translate to energy
efficiency. A car uses energy efficiently when it travels down with a heavy load, or up with a
light load. Accordingly, if multiple cars have the same traveling distance, this system
chooses the car that requires the least energy.
Through a maximum 10% reduction in energy consumption compared to our conventional
system, this system allows building owners to cut energy costs without sacrificing
passenger convenience.

Initial conditions: non-peak period

Car A: Parked at the 3rd floor

Car B: About to leave the 9th floor with several passengers
Car C: Parked at the 9th floor.
Car D: Parked at the 1st floor

Under the conditions above, when a hall call is registered at the 6th floor to go to the 1st floor, waiting
time and traveling distance will be the same regardless of whether car A, B or C responds to the call.

In response to the call, the cars will operate in the following ways:
Car A will travel up with no passengers and then down with only one passenger (requires more energy
than car B).
Car B will travel down with more passengers than car A (requires the least energy).
Car C will travel down with no passengers and then down with only one passenger (requires the most
energy).

Car selection
During non-peak hours when energy efficiency is prioritized, car B is selected.

(7) Dynamic Rule-Set optimizer [DRO]

Selects optimum car allocation by “Rule-Set” simulations
The Neural Network technology has enabled the system to continually and accurately predict the
passenger traffic within intervals of several minutes. A high speed RISC (Reduced Instruction Set
Computer) runs real-time simulations using multiple Rule-Sets and the predicted passenger
traffic, to select the Rule-Set which optimizes transport efficiency.

[Simulation example and performance results of each Rule-Set]

The diagram below shows an example during a morning up peak time. An ideal Rule-Set is
selected every few minutes according to the predicted traffic conditions.

(8) Destination oriented prediction system [DOAS-S] (option)
Allocates passengers to cars depending on destination floors
When a passenger enters a destination floor at a hall, the hall operating panel immediately
indicates which car will serve the floor. Because the destination floor is already registered, the
passenger does not need to press a button in the car. Furthermore, dispersing passengers by
destination prevents congestion in cars and minimizes their waiting and traveling time.

DOAS-S (Lobby floor(s)) DOAS-S (All floors)

DOAS-S hall operating panels are installed DOAS-S hall operating panels are installed
only on the busy floor(s) such as the lobby on all floors. Cars receive destination
while other floors have conventional hall information from all floors to provide the best
fixtures. This is particularly beneficial to service for more complex traffic conditions
improve the traffic flow leaving from the busy throughout the day.

with heavy up-peak traffic.
