It is true that the resources depletion and human destruction has been transforming
the Earth into a harsher environment and it is believed to be an inhabitable place in
the near future. While many people argue that more expenditure should be poured
in space research to address the quest for a new homeland, I completely disagree
with this point of view due to several reasons.
The first reason for this is that the more money is spent in space exploration, the
less spending is allocated to other fields such as education, healthcare system and
public services. To clarify, the main supporters of prohibitively expensive space
projects oftentimes are governments and since their budget is limited, they will
have to impose spending cuts on other aspects. Consequently, disagreements and
low quality of life would be witnessed if there was a reduction in the public
benefits. It is just non-sense to worry about future while the present life is not
ensured.
Another compelling reason is the impractical progress of space research. Although
several results are made but such explorations are insufficient in comparison with
the amount of time and endeavor has been made. Instead of spurring inefficiently
and even wastefully, the national and local authorities should adopt policies in
order to recover and protect our planet. For instance, in the aftermath of Covid-19,
because of numerous travel restrictions, positive signs were registered with the
most significant one being the recovery of ozone layer.
In conclusion, it seems to me that an additional amount of spending into space
explorations is ineffective in terms of guaranteeing our future shelter and its
consequences as well as a little chance of success suggest that protecting our
current habitat is a more adequate choice.
