Meaning of Civil Disobedience Movement

It’s a protest by a large group of people against particular laws,


taxes, or the policies of the government or an active power in a
region.

Reason for the launch of Civil Disobedience Movement


The main motive of civil disobedience movement was to break the
unjust laws by non – violence. The Indians wanted to make it equal
for all.
Ex- The salt law, The Indians were asked to buy salt at high prices
from British.
Importance of Civil Disobedience Movement

 It widened the base of the freedom struggle.


 It proved that Indians could resist violence with tolerance and
courage.
 Boycott of foreign made cloth and liquor shops.
 Refusal by peasants to pay revenue and chaukidar taxes.
 Violation of forest laws by grazing animals in reserved forests.
What is salt law?
Britain's Salt Act of 1882
prohibited Indians from
collecting or selling salt, a
staple in their diet. Indian
citizens were forced to buy the
vital mineral from their British
rulers, who, in addition to
exercising a monopoly over the
manufacture and sale of salt,
also charged a heavy salt tax.
Leaders who joined civil disobedience movement
Pyarelal Nayyar - Pyarelal was active in the freedom struggle, in
the footsteps of Gandhi. He participated in the Salt March to
Dandi in 1930.

Sarojini Naidu- After 1917, she joined Gandhi’s Satyagraha


Movement of non-violent resistance against British rule.

Khan Abdul Ghaffar - He is the person who led Civil Disobedience


Movement in North-West frontier province.
Need of Courage & Self Discipline – Non Violence

Greatest courage is to be Non-Violent – Gandhi Ji said.

 It takes incredible self-discipline and courage to stand up to


power

 It takes enormous bravery to face the potential violence and


persecution of the state

 With self discipline – one will never retaliate and will retain
the moral high ground at all costs.
