Third-party rack requirements

The DM5500 must be installed in a customer-provided rack that meets the following requirements:

Requirement category Description

Rack The DM5500 fits in a standard rack with a minimum depth of 37 inches (940 mm).
Recommended 24 inches wide rack to provide room for cable routing on the sides of the rack.

Overview 17
Requirement category Description
If you install a front door, it must maintain a minimum of 1.2 inches of clearance to the bezels.
It must be perforated with 50% or more evenly distributed air opening. It should enable easy
access for service personnel and allow the LEDs to be visible through it.
If you install a rear door, it must be perforated with 50% or more evenly distributed air
opening.
Blanking panels should be used as required to prevent air circulation inside the rack.
There is a recommended minimum of 42 inches of clearance in the front and 36 inches of
clearance in the rear of the rack to allow for service area and proper airflow.
Power The customer-provided rack should have redundant power zones with separate PDU power
strips. Each redundant power zone should have capacity for the maximum power load. When
configured this way, the appliance will remain up and running even with the failure of one
power zone.
Use the power calculator to refine the power requirements based on the hardware
configuration and customer-provided PDU.
For customer-provided PDUs, the Dell power cords on the appliance have NEMA 5-15P
connections to the PDUs.
NOTE: Dell is not responsible for any failures, issues, or outages resulting from failure of
the customer-provided PDUs.

Weight Customer rack and data center floor must be capable of supporting the weight of DM5500
equipment. The maximum weight of the DM5500 with all 24 drives installed is 43.2 kg (95.24
lb).
Use the power and weight calculator to refine the weight requirements based on the hardware
configuration and customer-provided rack and PDU.

Cabling and network requirements
Topics:
• Connect power cables
• Connect iDRAC cable
• Connect network cables

Connect power cables

The rack that contains the DM5500 should contain two PDUs that are each connected to different power sources for
redundancy. Redundant power sources allow one AC source to fail or be serviced without impacting appliance operation. On the
DM5500, connect PSU 0 to one AC source, and PSU 1 to the other AC source.
NOTE: You are only connecting the power cables, you are not powering on the DM5500. You power on the appliance in the
Power on the DM5500 using the power button section.

Connect iDRAC cable

Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) configuration and cabling provides an out-of-band method for remote
management. iDRAC configuration and cabling may be required for Dell support engineers to debug and troubleshoot. The
iDRAC port on the DM5500 is 1 GbE Base-T.
iDRAC configuration is strongly recommended because iDRAC can be used:
● To power the appliance on and off for required maintenance activities.
● By Dell support to gather detailed information about the state of the hardware.
CAUTION: If you do not configure iDRAC, Dell support response time will be impacted.

The DM5500 has one iDRAC connection/hostname (1 GbE RJ45). The 1 GbE management switch to which the iDRAC cable
connects must have RJ45 connections. One CAT5e/CAT6 cable is required to connect the iDRAC port to the network switch.
You can use any type of switch, as long as it is an RJ45 switch that supports 1 GbE and VLAN. You should connect the iDRAC
port to the external (routable) network VLAN.

Connect network cables

To deploy the DM5500, there are requirements and considerations for onsite networking, switches, and cabling.
The DM5500 recommended configuration requires five network cables to the customer's network; one iDRAC connection and
four network connections. The four network connections include two for the DM5500 management traffic and two for data
traffic.

Figure 26. DM5500 recommended network connections (copper 10GBASE-T ports)

Four network ports are required for standard installation. Two ports are used for the customer management IP address, and two
ports are used for the data uplinks to the public customer network. Port 1 on the LOM PCIe slot 1 and port 1 in PCIe slot 4
are the customer management IP ports and should go to different switches for improved reliability and fault tolerance. Port 2
on the LOM PCIe slot 1 and port 2 in PCIe slot 4 are the uplink ports used for data traffic and should go to different switches.
Additional free ports can be used in PCIe slot 3 for networking use cases where the customer needs to set up a separate
replication network, or additional backup networks using separate uplinks.
The iDRAC cable requires a 1 GbE BASE-T connection. In the DM5500 configuration with optical SFP28/SFP+ ports in PCIe
slots 3 and 4, a separate 1 GbE BASE-T switch is required for the iDRAC connection in addition to the two optical switches.
In the DM5500 configuration with copper 10GBASE-T ports, the iDRAC cable could be connected to either of the two copper
switches, or to a third 1 GbE BASE-T management switch.
The data uplink connections use a routable public VLAN to communicate with the rest of the company network where the
backup targets will be located. You should consult with your network administrator for proper VLAN planning and configuration
for your network environment. Use the LC-to-LC optical cables or direct attach (twinax) cables provided by Dell when
connecting the GbE ports on the DM5500 to the external network.
The following table shows the combinations of NIC ports on the DM5500, depending on how the customer configures the HBAs.
A maximum of six optical ports are available and a maximum of ten copper ports are available.

Before you connect the DM5500 to the switch(es), consider the following:
● The DM5500 is compatible with all SFP+ switches that support 10 GbE or 25 GbE and VLAN. If the 10 GbE and 25 GbE
switches (optional) are unique to each other, ensure to connect 10 GbE to 10 GbE or 25 GbE to 25 GbE. If the switches
are segregated by speed, they must share a common VLAN and be able to share that VLAN across all switches used for the
DM5500.
● It is recommended you configure the DM5500 with two switches for redundancy and fault tolerance.
● You must configure all the network ports in slots 1, 3, and 4 to run at the same speed; you cannot configure a mix of 10 and
25 GbE.
● You must turn off Cisco port security on the customer uplink ports.
● You can configure VLAN segregation on a single physical network connection; VLAN segregation across multiple physical
network connections is not required. You configure multiple VLANs at the virtual layer, not the physical layer.
NOTE: In the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance Configuration UI, you initially configure one VLAN. After you
complete the initial appliance configuration in the Data Manager Appliance Configuration UI, you can add additional
VLANs in the Data Manager Appliance UI.
● You can configure switch ports as access (untagged) or trunk (tagged) ports. Trunk mode is recommended and is required in
a multi-VLAN environment.
○ Access ports: Use this configuration when you want the switch ports to pass traffic for a single VLAN. You can have all
external ports in access mode and enter the VLAN as 0 in the Data Manager Appliance Configuration UI. In this case, the
switch handles the traffic segregation.
○ Trunk ports: Use this configuration when you want the switch ports to carry traffic for all the VLANs that are accessible
to the switch. You must enter the specific VLAN ID for your network in the Data Manager Appliance Configuration UI.

4
Configure iDRAC
iDRAC configuration is strongly recommended because iDRAC connections are helpful for Dell support engineers to debug and
troubleshoot issues. You can also use iDRAC to power the DM5500 on and off for required maintenance activities. The iDRAC
connections are typically on an external (public) network and can be part of the same external network VLAN configuration or
they can be separated into a different routed external network.

Prerequisites
The DM5500 must be racked.
The DM5500 must be physically cabled for iDRAC and LAN must be configured.
A USB to micro USB cable is required.
On your laptop/service computer, turn off any wireless networks and disconnect from any other hard wired network.

About this task

CAUTION: Do not use iDRAC to change the storage configuration, DM5500 settings, or BIOS settings, as making
changes to these will impact the DM5500 functionality. Contact Dell support if changes are required in any of
these areas.
The following procedure uses the iDRAC direct feature to configure iDRAC by directly connecting your laptop/service computer
to the micro USB port on the front of the DM5500.

Steps
1. Connect your laptop/service computer to the DM5500 using a USB to micro USB cable.
Plug the USB end of the cable into a USB port on your laptop/service computer, and plug the micro USB end of the cable
into the micro USB port on the right side of the front of the DM5500. For the location of the micro USB port, see DM5500
front view.
2. After you connect the USB the micro USB cable, the laptop will download the iDRAC Virtual NIC USB Device driver
automatically.
On your laptop/service computer, under Device Manager, Network adapters you will see Remote NDIS Compatible
Device #2.

3. Wait for the laptop to obtain the IP address 169.254.0.4. It is always the same IP address.
It may take several seconds for the IP addresses to be acquired. iDRAC acquires the IP address 169.254.0.3.
4. On your laptop/service computer, verify the new iDRAC IP address.
a. Open a browser, type the IP address 169.254.0.3, and press Enter.
The iDRAC login screen appears.
b. Log into iDRAC with the following credentials and change the root account password.
username: root
password: <appliance_serial_number>
The 14-character appliance serial number is located on the white label on the information tag.
The information tag is located at the back of the server, to the right of the power supply units. For the location of the
information tag, see DM5500 back panel features.

Pre-configuration tasks
Once you have installed the DM5500 in the rack, cabled the DM5500 to the switch(es), and verified the VLAN configuration,
you must perform the following pre-configuration tasks before logging in to the Data Manager Appliance Configuration UI to
configure the appliance.
Topics:
• Collect external network information
• Collect DM5500 serial number, NTP, and time zone information
• Power on the DM5500
• Assign static IP address to the service computer for initial DM5500 login

38 Pre-configuration tasks
Collect external network information
Before logging in to the Data Manager Appliance Configuration UI, you must collect information for your external (public)
network.
The DM5500 requires three public IP addresses; one for the appliance management IP, and up to two data IP addresses for data
backups.
The DM5500 internal network is configured in the 192.168.100.98 IP range using a subnet mask of 255.255.255.240. When
setting the appliance management IP and data IP addresses, use something other than the 192.168.100.98 IP range. (The range
includes a total of 14 IP addresses with 192.168.100.97 as the first IP address and 192.168.100.110 as the last IP address.)
You will need the following information to complete the initial DM5500 configuration in the Data Manager Appliance
Configuration UI:

Management IP address
For the Management IP address, you will need:
● Management IP - For example, 10.241.247.201.
You will use this IP address or Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) to log in to the Data Manager Appliance UI as the default
admin user after you complete the initial configuration of the appliance in the Data Manager Appliance Configuration UI.
● Management Subnet Mask - For example 255.255.254.0
● Management Gateway - For example, 10.241.247.1
● Management VLAN ID - Specify a numerical VLAN ID. If the switch port is using tagged/trunk mode, provide the correct
VLAN ID that corresponds to your network. If the switch port is using untagged/access mode, use VLAN 0.
NOTE: It is recommended that you configure the external network ports in tagged/trunk mode for maximum
performance and reliability.

Switch port configuration External network VLAN ID

Tagged/trunk mode (recommended) use the VLAN ID configured in the trunk
Untagged/access mode 0

In the Data Manager Appliance Configuration UI, you initially configure one VLAN. After you complete the initial appliance
configuration in the Data Manager Appliance Configuration UI, you can add additional VLANs in the Data Manager Appliance
UI.
● MTU - Make a note of the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) size on the switch ports. When you log in to the Data
Manager Appliance Configuration UI, the MTU size on the switch ports must be greater than or equal to the 1500 MTU size
setting in the UI.
● Bonding Options - Set to Active-Active in the Data Manager Appliance Configuration UI. Active-Active is the network
bonding mode where both ports are active and the internal network traffic is load balanced between them. If one of the
active ports goes down, the remaining active port continues to distribute the internal network traffic. Active-Active bonding
does not require any corresponding switch side configuration.

Data IP addresses
For the Data IP addresses, you will need:
● Data IP 1 - For example, 10.198.32.178
● Data IP 2 (Optional) - For example, 10.198.32.179
● Data Subnet Mask - For example, 255.255.252.0
● Data Gateway (Optional) - For example, 10.98.232.1
● Data VLAN ID - Specify a numerical VLAN ID. If the switch port is using tagged/trunk mode, provide the correct VLAN ID
that corresponds to your network. If the switch port is using untagged/access mode, use VLAN 0.
NOTE: It is recommended that you configure the external network ports in tagged/trunk mode for maximum
performance and reliability.

Pre-configuration tasks 39
Switch port configuration External network VLAN ID

bonding mode where both ports are active and the internal network traffic is load balanced between them. If one of the
active ports goes down, the remaining active port continues to distribute the internal network traffic. Active-Active bonding
does not require any corresponding switch side configuration.

DNS
The Management IP address must be registered in DNS, with forward and reverse lookup entries. Data IP addresses are not
required to be registered. The DNS hostnames can contain only numbers, letters, and hyphen (-).
For the DNS, you will need:
● Primary DNS Server - For example, 10.254.61.23
● Secondary DNS Server (Optional) - For example, 10.254.61.24

Collect DM5500 serial number, NTP, and time zone

information
You must collect the following information before logging in to the Data Manager Appliance Configuration UI.
● DM5500 serial number - The DM5500 serial number is located on the pull-out information tag in the back of the DM5500
to the right of the power supply units. You will need the 14-character serial number because it is used as part of the default
password when you log in to the Data Manager Appliance Configuration UI for the first time to perform the initial DM5500
configuration.
● NTP servers - For example, 10.254.137.22
The NTP server(s) must meet the following requirements:
○ The NTP server must be a physical server with its own hardware clock (if you plan to have your own local NTP server) or
any public NTP server.
○ The NTP server must not use the Windows W32tm service for time synchronization because it is unreliable.
○ The DM5500 supports up to two NTP servers. If you are using two NTP servers to configure the DM5500, the NTP
servers must be in sync with each other.
● Time zone - Time zone in which the DM5500 is located. For example, America/Cayman - Eastern Standard Time
