Introduction
World Environment Day on 5 June is the biggest international day for
the environment. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme
(UNEP), countries across the globe participate in this UN international
day, with millions of people in government, business, civil society, schools
and celebrities engaging online and in-person to raise awareness and
influence environmental action. World Environment Day in 2024 focuses
on restoring land, building drought resilience and stopping desertification
under the campaign slogan, “Our Land. Our Future”.

Restoration
More than 2 billion hectares of the world’s land is now degraded. Record-
breaking temperatures caused by human-driven greenhouse gas
emissions are scorching the Earth. Drought has become an existential
threat, increasing in number and duration by almost a third in the last two
decades. Around the world, soil quality is declining due to water loss, higher

temperatures, and pollution caused by overuse of fertilizers, affecting food
security, livelihoods and health, especially for the world’s most vulnerable
people.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the host of World Environment Day in 2024.
The Kingdom has launched pioneering national and regional initiatives
using nature-based solutions to reduce emissions, and restore and preserve
land, marine and coastal environments.

Everyone alive right now has a critical role to play for the future of land.
We are not just Boomers, not Gen X, Millennials, not Gen Z or Alpha. We
are Generation Restoration. We cannot turn back time, but we can grow
forests, harvest rainwater, eat soil-friendly diets and fight climate change.
We are the generation that can make peace with land.

The 2024 campaign takes design inspiration from Saudi
Arabian painted doors, landscapes and animals. Bright
and vibrant, the range of colours echoes the wide range of
ecosystems we are reviving.

Visual
Approach
The visual strategy should capture the essence of action and restoration in a
manner that resonates across generations and segments of society. Clean,
impactful images will depict these themes. Saudi Arabian patterns will be
integrated sparingly and minimally into the layouts, adding subtle points of visual
interest. To enhance the focal point further, gradients or vignettes may also be
employed, ensuring that contrasts are effectively created where needed.
