 SHORT ARTICLE

The Uniqueness Of North Sumatra

The city of Medan, which is now the 3rd

most populous city in Indonesia, was once
designed to resemble European urban planning by
the Dutch at that time, so the term Paris Van
Sumatra emerged.

The term began to be echoed during the

colonial period. Apparently the origin of the
nickname originated from the intense competition
between England and the Netherlands in developing colonies in the 20th century era. In order not to
lose competitiveness, entrepreneurs also coined the name "Paris Van Sumatra" which at that time was
characterized by urban civilization and modern lifestyles. In their hands, the city of Medan which was
originally a swamp turned into a civilized city with European-style buildings. For example the
London Sumatra Building (Lonsum), Maimun Palace, Tjong a fie House, Graha Maria Annai
Velangkanni, Al Mashun Grand Mosque and others.
